This clutched me out on my English Literature Paper 2 about two years ago. I got a question on war and conflict or something and Ozymandias was in the paper. As this was the one question on poetry I had mastered, I internally screamed like a pterodactyl when I saw this, I legit would've gotten a 6 at best on Literature overall otherwise.
I have no idea how I managed to turn this into a two hour study session, but I did and it helped so I recommend this to anyone doing gcse literature, or anyone who had to look at ozymandias for just about anything
I would compare Ozymandias and Storm on the Island because both of them can be interpreted as romantic poems, Ozymandias loved himself but the people on the island loved each other as a community and the nature. In Ozymandias, the king loses his power over time in comparison, the same goes for Storm on the Island, although the community is prepared in the beginning- having power over the storm, they lose more and more as the poem progresses and the storm ends up having power over them. The difference is that the king never regained his power but, the community did because it was 'nothing' they were worrying about the whole time
THANK YOU ❤ This will help me teach my ELA and Support Learning English classes so much easier! Extending students is so easy, but getting students understand things when they have lower abilities is something I'm struggling with this year. A short video is going be a great starting point 👍
Anyone noticed that the rhyme scheme structure actually mimics how the statue is broken and has its middle missing? it goes ABAB aththe start- like the head- and EFEF at the end- like the legs- but ACDCED in the middle.
@@xodacan5072 you could say something like, "structurally, the rhyme scheme mimics the 'trunkless' statue by losing an order in the middle section. This reinforces in the most basic structure of the poem what we already learn about Oymandias' power being eradicated by time"etc etc etc or whatever
In the poems 'Ozymandias' and 'Exposure', nature is presented as a dominant force which overwhelms everything, including those who hold power. In the poem 'Ozymandias', shelley initially uses a sculptured face of the statue
I would compare this to “checking out me history” as both are certainly a criticism of power, or the misuse of it, however they differentiate in the fact that “ozymadias” explores its impermanence and “checking out me history” of how that power and influence has retained through centuries, into our modern day.
thank you. that was very informative and engaging. I searched Ozymandias because i was curious as to whether there was a deeper significance to the name of the character in the Watchmen. Also, I'm not learned at all about poetry but Shelly's poem does remind me of Death the Leveller by James Shirley.
Hello sir, My teacher says to structure a comparative poetry essay like this: 1. Introduction 2. Poem A + B Themes + Context 3. Poem A + B Structure 4. Poem A + B Language 5. Conclusion Sir pls reply to me, do you agree with this structure, would it get me the marks? Thank you.
Thank you @mrbruff - Another poem you could compare Ozymandias to is Storm on the Island. Both poems show the readers the effects of nature in a negative way. For example, in Ozymandias it shows that nature is decaying the power of the king as time passes and as the statue decays the power of the tyrant king decays too as it stands in the lonely desert. Similarly, in Storm on the Island the poet shows the readers how damaging nature can be and the effects on the community. Both poets use a lonely environment to describe the scenes and the effects of nature on its surroundings.
I’m only just starting to prepare for trial exams and use this to help I would consider comparing it to London as the poets both point out how people believe they can control and own nature when nature is greatly underestimated in many poems such as storm on the island and extract from the prelude
Actually I feel that Edgar Allen Poe's "Dream within a dream" compares very well. When the average reader comes across Ozymandias, they often interpret it as a general statement on the temporary state of all things, and that laying claim to anything with any sense of permanence is futile, represented by the poem as a statement of one's own power. In this way, Dream Within A Dream reflects on not only the temporary state of all things, but the illusions of emotion and attachment, as we build our lives on what we feel towards other things and other people, the foundation of why we do what we do having less tangibility than the very air we breathe.
When a new specification is established, it requires two years of instruction before the first examination. Currently, there have been no discussions regarding the introduction of a new specification. Therefore, the soonest possible timeline for a change would be in time for the 2026 examinations. However, given the fact that two academic years were disrupted due to the pandemic, resulting in only five complete years of examinations under the existing specification, I would imagine it will be even later than that.
I swear why does school make such an education hard to learn in school but in a video explaining it all in a quick and digestible way it is a bizaar time we love in nowadays.

I would only *slightly* compare it to Browning and Porphyria's Lover, in the sense that there's a verbal testimony to an act, one that sought to arrest time (in Ozymandius, the sculpter, creating what presumably he felt might be an un-shatterable visage, and in Pophyria's Lover, the moment in which the poem's speaker psychopathically endeavours to preserve his partner's life and beauty, to hold fast time, to arrest it in someway). I think, very much like the poem tries to convey about power, sonnet structures and, more generally, everything in life changes and passes. The original is established, but it will not remain thus. People look to the past to re-establish some ideal, when that passed long ago, as all things are transitory. History is not from one point arching forwards, but is a rolling scheme of invention, discovery, loss and change.
