The Skins had that devastating loss in the SB then started 0-2. It was a testament to Gibbs and the character of the organization to rebound and win the NFC East at 11-5. The Cards were one FG away from the division title, Dallas and NY Giants both had winning records. The NFC East was the toughest division in football. The Bears scored a great win in the playoffs at RFK. This would be the last go around for Theismann/Riggins to be replaced in 85 by Schroeder/Rogers. Gary Clark and Rickey Sanders would replace Garrett/ Brown at WR by 1986. The Skins were beginning a nearly seamless transition that would lead them to the SB22 title. Bobby Beathard deserves a heck of a lot of credit and DC Ritchie Pettibon never got his props for the kind of defense he led in the skins glory years
Russell Seilhamer great comment. To your point on Petitbon, Gibbs gets a lot of shine for winning 3 SBs with 3 different quarterbacks none of whom were hall of famers. But Beathard found and Petitbon delivered dominant defenses with guys that average fans will never remember. Neal Olkewicz, Rich Milot, Mel Kaufman, Monte Coleman, Vernon Dean, Mark Murphy, Alvin Walton, Barry Wilburn, Darryl Grant, etc. They had one hall of farmer in Darrell Green, pro bowlers in Charles Mann and Dexter Manley, and the all time underrated Dave Butz.
Gibbs is so underrated as a coach IMO. 3 Bowls with 3 different QBs says it all. Only Walsh, Noll & Belicheick have that many and they won em all with the same QB.
I still go back to watching that 82 title game vs Dallas. Redskins up 21-17. Dallas gets held Septien misses FG, Kauffman intercepts Hogeboom leads to FG then the should be HOFer Dexter Manley tips Hogebooms pass into Darryl Grants hands TD. And finally they force a turnover on downs. That’s an unbelievable defensive sequence that gets no publicity. It wasn’t Riggins or Theismann, it was the defense. Then they shutout the Dolphins in the second half of SB17. A blown coverage and a KO return was all that kept the game from being a Skins blowout. They shutdown the Rams and Bears in the 86 playoffs, shutdown the Bears again on the road then Minnesota and embarrass a good Denver team in SB22. The 91 Skins had one of the best defensive teams ever. 7 points to Atlanta, 10 to Detroit, and most of Buffalos 24 points came in garbage time in SB 26. Yeah, that defense for a decade was something special. Dave Butz is a HOFer in my opinion
Joe Gibbs winning 3 Superbowls with 3 different QB's is an amazing achievement. Beyond that the 1991 Redskins were an entirely different TEAM (other than a handful of players) than the 1982-83 Redskins who won back to back NFC championships and went 1-1 in the Superbowl. In my opinion Gibbs is most definitely a top 5 all time NFL coach along with a few other names (no order) ... Lombardi, Noll, Landry, Shula, Walsh, Parcells, Belichick.
No,he's outside of that elite too 5 category,,Paul Brown ,Vince Lombardi,George Halas, Curly Lambeau ,Bill.Belichick ,Chuck Noll,Bill Walsh , then the conversation begins ,with Joe Gibbs at spot #8 ,Shula and Landry finalizing the top 10 .
That's a real football team, the Washington REDSKINS"! GO REDSKINS! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS! Don't flush the toilets, leave the Commodes full of commanders. The "Swamp Rat Stadium Commanders". David
Those Dallas Washington games in the early to mid 80s were must see TV always the second game of a doubleheader on CBS with the greatest pro football broadcasting team ever in Pat Summerall and John Madden
Its stunning as to how much I missed this era now looking at what the team /organization is now. That Skins defense of that era was a hitting machine, opportunistic, and scored off of turnovers. The current Washington team has no ballhawks and way below football i.q.
This was when football was football
Greatest uniform in the history of the sport. Shame it’s gone
The 80s ‘Skins will always be my all-time favorite team in all of professional sports. Screw the Commanders and Dan Snyder!

Well said
@Fries Brilliant point. Team culture played a HUGE role.

Belichick's record without brady as a HC is pretty bad

OH, MAN somebody's got to post that Victory over Dallas at Dallas.
If you don't know the score it was 30-28 Redskins

1:51 Washington have never lost a playoffs game at home, I guess the 1940 championship game didn’t count when the Bears blitzed them 73-0
He means RFK Stadium, the 1940 game was at old Griffith Stadium
@ Griffith Stadium wasn’t the home field for the Redskins?
NFL before it was rigged and scripted. I miss those days
its hard for me to remember most games
Jeff kaye. RIP
The bears pounded Joe that day never forget it!! but we got even in 86 and 87!!!
wasn't quite the dominant season as it was in 1983
I think it’s horrible the Jews made them change their name.
It's what happened in Minneapolis in 2020 that led to the name being retired
