It was invented in 1946 at a place called Buddy's by Gus Guerra. Gus was searching for a high-end pizza pan to create the perfect pizza until he realized something. Detroit's auto assembly plants used blue steel utility trays used to hold parts (i.e nuts, bolts etc). For these plants, they were just a thing to hold parts...to Gus, it was a Sicilian-like deep dish pizza.
