Rancid is an American punk rock band formed in Berkeley, California in 1991. Founded by Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, former members of the band Operation Ivy, Rancid is often credited as being among the wave of bands that revived mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States during the mid-1990s - The Distillers are an American punk rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1998 by vocalist and guitarist Brody Dalle. Dalle co-wrote, played guitar and provided lead vocals for nearly every track on the band's three albums - Timothy Ross Armstrong is an American musician, singer, songwriter and producer. Known for his distinctive voice, he is the singer/guitarist for the punk rock band Rancid and hip hop/punk rock supergroup Transplants. Prior to forming Rancid, Armstrong was in the ska punk band Operation Ivy - Brody Dalle is an Australian singer, songwriter, and musician. She began playing music in her adolescence and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18, where she founded the punk rock band The Distillers. The group released three albums before disbanding in 2006.

Rancid and the distillers were and still are one of my all time favorite bands and I'll never forget how sad and pissed I was when my favorite couple broke up.
Two years later, they wed. Dalle was 18 years old to Armstrong's 32, and leaving behind a turbulent, dysfunctional childhood in Melbourne for a new life in LA. The story pushed by Armstrong's camp five years later, following the divorce, was that Dalle had used Armstrong, Also she admitted to telling Tim she was 19 in an interview sooo.

Honestly, she would never have been playing that festival in the 90's (a licenced venue) without management telling her to say she's 19. They won't say 18 because that's too 'on the nose'. That's how you know it's an adult telling her what to do. A teenager will say 18. A manager will tell you to say 19. It's got nothing to do with Tim.

I don’t know, but considering that Brody has 2 failed marriages and her claims of abuse in both of them. I always look at the common denominator of a situation. You have 1 marriage that ends badly with abuse allegations, that sucks. You have a second failed marriage with claims of abuse, how can someone be that unlucky? 🤷🏽♀️I don’t know them personally and I certainly wouldn’t look to Wikipedia as a source.
Lots of abused women are attracted to violent men. They're warped and think violence is what makes a man a man. That's why among intelligent men we tell each other to stay away from abused women. At some point they normalize violence and will push you to it or think you're weak if you don't hit them.

But as you said it is a nasty piece of business that regardless of weather she told him she was 19 at first ( n she may have) but the timeline tells the story so regardless if she lied about her age first meet, he learned her true age and instead of feeling sick to his stomach and walking away which any man with morals and principles would, he didn't and that is something that most likely would have had him in a R.Kelly situation.But punk n the fact that social media wasn't out yet saved him.

I'm pretty new to this tbh, I had no idea that Brody was 16 and Tim was 30 when they started dating and that is just wild to me. Going based on this, I'm sorry but I think the fault lies more on Tim because he was the fully grown adult in this scenario. Brody was just a teenager, technically, still a kid by the constitution and Tim should've called it off immediately when he found out her true age. Reading another comment, they were saying that she tried to put the moves on Josh Homme but he turned her down because he obviously knew the relationship would be problematic and that is what Tim should've done as well. You can say that Brody was being trampy but again, she was a kid and regardless of her antics, the adult in the situation still has the power. If Tim was that interested in her, he should've waited until she became an adult
The constitution doesn't matter. They met in Australia, she was there until she was 18. None of their relationship happened on American soil when she was underage.
Her and Tim broke up because she was pictured kissing Josh and after divorcing Tim went on to marry him.

I don't think Brody ever took Tim's last name, so I don't think her name was ever Brody Armstrong. Not 100% on that but don't remember her ever going by that.
Pretty sure Brody Armstrong was her name of the first two records by The Distillers when they were signed to Hellcat, she was then Brody Dalle on 'Coral Fang' album when they moved to Sire.

Am glad there is a video on this, I remember when they were together and the break up. One thing that I will always remember when they were a couple was Kelly Osbourne saying how much she hated Brody and saying she just used Tim and his name to further her (Brody’s) career. There was a response from Brody printed as well but I can’t remember exactly what her response was. She has definitely admitted in interviews to lying about her age. But that is why Kelly is in the Fall Back Down rancid video because she was always on Tim’s side and never liked Brody even when they were married. One article at the time says as they (Tim and Brody) both described the moment they met as love at first sight. Make of that what you will. I also remember at the Kerrang awards after their breakup, it being written about that when Tim saw Brody and Josh together he cried and had to leave. Josh has physically abused women in public as well so he is no saviour for Brody. I don’t condone either of behaviour during this relationship, Tim was off alcohol but during the time he got his spider web head tattoo he was on a heroin relapse and Brody was a meth head and only stopped when she got pregnant. All interviews and articles about it have been taken off the web, no doubt due to both Tim and Brody not wanting it to be public anymore as they are both not proud of how they behaved, or in Brody’s case if it would harm custody of her children in her break up with Josh. If anyone has any physical music mags still kicking around from the time, doubtful I know, but that would be the best source. I love Rancid and The Distillers. Sometimes people aren’t good for each other and fuel each others bad behaviour.

I agree its pretty effed up, but really how many 16 year olds has Anthony Kiedis dated, among a great many other rock stars. Not defending Tim Armstrong, but in the grand scheme of rockstar/ underage relations, this story is pretty damn tame. The biggest difference is that we for some reason expect better behaviour from the punk scene than we do from mainstream musicians.

See my thinking is that, as a man in my early 30s myself, dating a 19 year old at this point is a seriously unattractive proposition at this point. I don’t have some weird insecurity to want to show off some child on my arm for social cred, and I couldn’t imagine wanting to actually spend my time with some dumb kid since I could barely stand 19 year olds when I was 19 much less a decade+ later.
A significant other is supposed to be your partner in virtually all aspects of life-they should be each other’s best friend since they will (ostensibly) be spending more time with each other than anyone else in their lives.
So anyone who thinks it would be cool or fun to date/marry a teenager when you’re in your 30s, please answer this: if that same 19 year old was the opposite gender or otherwise off the board as far as a romantic partner, would you still be able to spend all your free time with them? Age of consent in Australia is 16 except in 2 states where it is 17. Brody lived in Victoria where the age of consent is 16. She didn't move to the U.S. until she was 18. So unless they went to South Australia or Tasmania within the first year of meeting and banged, then Tim did nothing wrong. Creepy? That's up for debate, but illegal, not at all.

No one is wrong here. This happens almost 30 years ago. Different sensibilities. Brody was already living on her own (she wasnt a sheltered kid) and yes, she introduce herself as being 19. She says so. So this is more like a college prof hooking up with a student, weird but not the end of the world. Tim married her, wrote songs to her and gave her a career. Lastly, groomers and pedos dont just act out once. Where are Tim's other victims if he was one? This situation was weird but nothing out of the ordinary.

Like you said two years is too long, however a common occurrence in situations where a young girl lies about her age is that when she finally does tell the truth the adult doesn't want to leave her and figures he'll wait until she's of age. Brody seems cool but when I saw her solo gig she played for less than 45 minutes and that was it so that’s always irked me a bit
@@HyperUserGoesHyperer As someone who’s played live for 20 or so years, I can tell you this. The allowed stage time for artists can be pretty short ie: 30-50 minutes max depending on the venue. It likely wasn’t her choice to only play for 45 minutes. Especially if she was playing solo or not in the distillers. There might also be issues with contracts, preventing her from playing Distillers tracks, or maybe just certain Distillers or Spinnerette tracks. Thus shortening her set as well. I mean, 45 minutes isn’t the best. But it’s not the worst. I’ve seen bands get on stage, have a few technical difficulties, and end up playing actual music for only 20-25 minutes during what should be a 60-90 minute set. The music biz is very strange! If I had to guess, I’d say your experience was out of her hands. But I could be wrong. It’s like the Wild West out there. And being a performer is one of the most stressful, AND freeing experiences in the world. There are just SO many variables. Take care 😄!

People really don't understand how common teens with mid-late 20s relationships were in the 90s and even part of the 2000s. I was in a couple when I was teen, and a friend of mine in h.s. was 15 and started dating the singer of a band we saw at a local small time punk show who was 25. When they were 17 and he was just about to turn 27 they married during our senior year. They divorced about 4 yrs later only to reconnect a few years after that, remarry and are still together raising a family. Sometimes the person for you is out there and you may not be the same ages. Just look at Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau. And given how Brody was with Josh Homme it sems like she has some serious issues of her own so I don't put the age lie past her.
I met a 15yo at a gig when i lived in Budapest. I was older than her, and didnt pursue her really, but Ill admit we fooled around a bit. And we got married when we reconnected a decade later.

The entire East Bay scene saw he was getting screwed over. Tim is too kind, too sweet, and too tired of being alone to keep his guard up.

I used to like Operation Ivy and early Rancid. But I never cared for Tim Armstrong. I know people who have met him and didn't have anything good to say. I think she probably did tell him she was 19, I think she probably told everyone she was older to get into the scene and break through. However, she clearly didn’t lie to him for two years - he would’ve known at some point. She was probably praised for seeming and acting older.
I think the issue is more the way we view kids who don’t act like kids and the culture that feeds into. She was vulnerable but nobody cared. If everyone around Tim thought it was okay, that just reinforces him that the relationship was okay (when it wasn’t). Obviously don’t know anything about their marriage beyond how it ended, so I don’t know if he was abusive or whatever but he definitely held the power as the person who could make or break her career and (likely) her only source of genuine support for thousands of miles.
