Nice video, The Burns Harbor was the first and favorite ship I was a crew member on. That yellow engine you showed is actually a 1200hp Caterpillar D399 generator set, she has two Cat gen sets, one was replaced the in mid 2000's. The ship has 4- 3600hp 20 cylinder EMD engines (two per propeller) for the 14,400hp.

My father sailed the Inland steel boats for 25 years. Thanks for the inspiration.

When I was a very young boy I loved watching those giant ships on lake Erie, I lived in Pittsburgh but my family would vacation in Erie and that was my best memories of my vacation time with my family and just sitting on shore and seeing those big ships pass by.

This was a very enjoyable watch. You guys have some tough work out there. I'm in shipping, though I've never worked on a ship. That chart about how many trucks and trains ya saved hit me. Man, if it weren't for ships, our highways would be flooded with trucks. I've read before if the Soo Locks ever went down, our economy would crash. I can see that being the case. There wouldn't be enough trucks to move everything.

Great pix...But the pic/captions are often not held long enough to get a good look at the shot , and also the explanation . Could use a little more time to take in each " slide". Maybe , if you provided verbal narration instead , we could study each shot more thoroughly while listening. ...Just a friendly suggestion. Thanks for the effort in making these documentaries.

My thoughts exactly!!! Nice try, but the fire fell off of your cigar!!! You need a lot of help to get an A++ on this!!! The captions go by waaaay to quick!!! They blend in with the bottom because they are white and again waaaay tooooo small!!!! If you ever do more of these (and I truly hope you do!!!) Please get some disinterested third party folks to help you do some top-notch editing and post-production work!!! Unfortunately, until then, I can only give this a 1.5 out of 10...😥😟😢

Thanks Dave for the view and life of a freighter.I would really like to come back and go to the museum about the Edmund Fitzgerald and go to maritime sailor cathedral. Do they take boats out to the site where she went down I would like to place a wreath in the water for all the good men that went down with her. Thank all you guys for all the hard work y'all do to keep this country running!

The sight were the Fitz sunk is pretty much on a shipping channel but it's a route usually only used when the weather is rough and doesn't want to take the usual mid lake track or the ship is going to Thunder Bay Ontario. No freighter would stop, time is money.

It's sad that you don't even know the name of the bridge that connects Sault Sainte Marie Michigan and Ontario. The Ambassador Bridge is located between Detroit Michigan and Windsor Ontario. It is not anywhere near the Soo. I'll give you another hint. The Blue Water Bridge connects Port Huron Michigan with Sarnia Ontario. Also nowhere near the Soo.

I thought the same thing too. The Burns Harbor never goes down through the Detroit river so I don't know how he confused the names of the bridges. And I think all of those unloading pics were in Burns harbor, not Indiana harbor. Nonetheless, still pretty cool

@@scottburns5376 They were all Burns Harbor. I worked on the Burns Harbor about 17 years ago and short of Detour to the bridge Lake Huron didn't exist :) Always Superior to Burns Harbor, maybe an occasional Silver Bay or Escanaba to Burns Harbor.
