That's how I came into the world, my half Laotian/Vietnamese great grandma married a Japanese general. They came to support us against the French, with the support of the monarch family. My family supported the US in their campaign which got all the men in my moms family side beheaded. Being related to the royal house meant death. Only way the women survive was to hide amongst the commoners and escape to thailand. The 3 headed 🐘 flag will always be our treasure.

4:47 It's called Operation Lam Son 719. The South Vietnamese launched the offensive not the US.
There's also the Neutralists which was integral to the fall of the monarchy because of how many coups it caused and how many numbers it boosted the communists in Laos.
The monarchy collapsed through the failure of the govt structure, not through military might unlike in Cambodia and South Vietnam

Not mentioned was that the Kingdom of Laos was officially neutral in the war. Had the King actually been an official ally of the US much more could have been done.
After the takeover the king and most of his family were rounded up and sent to camps where the all died.
The “Vietnam” War as we say in the US was a much larger post-colonial struggle for power in the vacuum left by the French departure. Unfortunately any efforts we had basically went into supporting the same plans that didn’t work for the French in the first place. That being said, I’m not sorry that we did at least try to keep SE Asia from falling to communism. 50 years later there still is no democracy in the region.

Recruited by the C.I.A and Air America we fought side-by-side with our American Allies. Other's know us as Montagnards. #RIP General Vang Pao my people's Brave Warrior.

It is fairly easy if you ask me,
1 - North Vietnam supplies most of the man power to overtake small isolated military bases in Laos. Royal Lao disregarding of ethnicity did not have the man power to fight an all-out war from North Vietnam even with American aid. Vietnamese soldiers can be replaced far faster than the right side can recover. Also properganda was used, lying to the people of Vietnam and Laos that they are going to go fight Americans in Laos but at the end its all local ethnic fighting against each other's with zero American ground troops. Brother against brother, dad against son.
    2. The major Lao ecthnic soldiers had low morale and didn't want to fight. Whether they lose or win the war, the country is and will still be run by them. After all, it was just two brothers trading blows while the rest of the smaller ethnic group fight their dirty war.
3 - North Vietnam took advantage of the 1973 peace treaty by bringing in more troops into major villages and towns and slowly started the reeducation process while persecuting those who fled to thailand in 1975.

    • @PrimalRage-om8uz

the Vietcongs didn't fight alone, they had the support of communist China, who sent 300,000 train soldiers to help the Viets. and in the air. the communist Soviets sent in their pilots manning the skies to shoot down Americans.
America didn't know about this until almost the end of the war. Had it just been Vietnamese by themselves, they would have lost fighting the South Viets/Americans/Laos/ Cambodians and ethnic minorities. But those two communist countries like China and Soviet change the whole dynamic of the war.

The big problem with this story is that the Pathet Lao never overthrew the Lao Monarchy... at least, not without the support, advice and leadership of the North Vietnam Army. The Pathet Lao were mere puppets of the NVA and only ever achieved one victory on their own with minimal NVA input. That victory was the takeover of Nam Bac, north of Luang Prabang. Nam Bac was considered "safe" by the Royalist army and as such, had undermanned defences, mostly from untrained recruits and Thai volunteers. It was an easy victory for the undertrained and underequipped Pathet Lao. The half-caste Lao/Vietnamese Pathet Lao leader spent the entire war hiding in a cave in Huaphan, close to the Vietnam border where he could send others out to fight and die in battles whilst he remained in the security of a deep limestone cave, protected by NVA guards and ready to flee across the border to the safety of Vietnam if things went bad. And oddly, he is now revered as a "hero". The Pathet Lao recruited mostly farmers and uneducated rural folk who believed their promises of a better life under communist rule... then promptly went back to being poor and uneducated after the dust settled. The Pathet Lao fabricated the "revolution" under the guise of "ridding Laos of the rich, corrupt elitist government"... then promptly replaced it with their own rich, corrupt elitist government, taking a huge step backward which lasted for almost 30 years! A sad part of Laos' history.

    • @comradek57
      @comradek57 4 місяці тому

Sad part, how can you said that. At least the Pathet Lao liberated Laos from French colonialism, US imperialism and US imperialist puppet regime of the "Royal Kingdom of Laos".
In the 1930-1960s, just like patriotic Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Cuban nationalists who wanted to be either free of European colonialism (case of Vietnam and Laos, fascism and capitalism (China, Cuba and Korea), Laotian nationalists actually asked USA first for help, but USA rejected them because they feared that their interest will deteriorated, like loosing France and UK as an ally or capitalism will be under threat (just because communists asking them for help for national liberation from colonialism), so the Laotian nationalists, asked for USSR and China for help for national liberation instead, and they were granted one.
USA is the one bombing the hell of out Laos during the 1960-1970s for no reason, they justify that this is for freedom and democracy, but this is actually because they don't want that a communist nationalist organisations winning in Laos and Vietnam, therefore threatening interests in south east Asia. Look, this all backfired, North Vietnam invaded and took over South Vietnam and reunified Vietnam under communism and independence has been enjoyed, while the Pathet Lao defeated the "Royal Kingdom of Laos" and liberated Laos as a communist nation, free of US imperialism and independence is enjoyed.

Pathet Lao means Laotian Nation or Nation of Laos as they wanted freedom from colonizers and away from authoritarian monarchy rule of kings and princes. America try to spin it they were fighting for democracy and freedom when it was the opposite. Nobody wanted kings telling them what to do this is the middle of the 20th century for crying out loud. Every nation pretty much up to that point gotten rid of that nonsense. With a free open democracy the US govt know that is a risk and too hard to control free people so they don't want that. The US govt fought to keep a royal who was bought and paid for puppet for the US government despite what the Laotian wanted that was best for them. This is so America can continue to control Laos as they please if they have an inside man at the top. To do what they best see fit for their benefit not to the benefit of the Laotian people. They never tell you that in the history books they teach. They were originally asking America for help just like Ho Chi Minh ask the US for help to get rid of the French when the French was breaking international law and the Geneva convention and Vietnam's sovereignty and democratically held elections that Ho Chi Minh won fair and square. The US govt still wouldn't recognize him as the true leader and insert themselves into a war none of their concern with Vietnam's civil war due to their propaganda campaign and interests. If they can't have the whole Vietnam they are going to have at least half of it and the best part which is South Vietnam which they just drew up out of thin air. Who is going to say anything when America are allies with the French and the US runs the UN. Laotian independence freedom fighters and Ho Chi Minh's insistent pleas for help fell on deaf ears so they turn to the communist to have them gain their freedom from the French colonizers and that was when history was changed forever. Could of been stopped right then and there but America blew it and Russia and China took advantage of the perfect opportunity when America dropped the ball. If America only had fooled the law and tell the French to knock it off and leave these people be and let them have their freedom. As if not doing anything to help someone who begs for your help for freedom like all nations wants to be America aids the law breakers who likes to subjugate poorer weaker smaller nations they aid the big bigger more powerful bullies just because they are friends. If my friend is the problem I am not going to be helping my friend if they are in the wrong. That is what America did. Imagine if America did the right thing and told the French to get lost but instead they aided the French. That whole area would be enjoy the fruits of capitalism and enjoy democracy, The world would be so much different than it is today. So sad and tragic.

Laos teach and tell the real history to there people aboutCamobodia and how Thailand stealing culture and claiming whats not there.
