- Hi guys and welcome to another one of my thorough review videos! Today we'll be taking a close look at the Derwent Metallic 12 set, a fairly unique set of wax-based pencils that are a neat addition to any coloured pencil collection.

Hi, great review. I'm the artist that drew the butterflies on the tin. I found they work best on black paper and to get the colours to be at their most vibrant the pencils need to be extremely sharp. I didn't use water with the pencils to create the butterflies, I preferred them dry.

Hi artists! *THIS VIDEO REVIEWS THE "ORIGINAL" DERWENT METALLIC PENCILS -- NOT THE 20th ANNIVERSARY METALLIC PENCILS THAT DERWENT HAVE RECENTLY RELEASED*
I've had the opportunity to test out the 20th anniversary pencils and whilst they're similar in many ways, they are a little different to the original metallics. The new pencils:
-Are NOT watersoluble
-Are softer with a smoother, creamier laydown
-Higher intensity of shimmer and shine
-Blend a layer a little more easily than the originals
-Wider range of colours (24 colours, including colours practically identical to the 12 original ones, plus 12 new ones). Darker and lighter colours are included in the set.
-Better lightfastness ratings overall: 20 out of the 24 score the highest rating of Blue Wool 8. 1 scores a Blue Wool 7, 1 scores a 5, and 2 score a 2.
-Packaging art features geometric patterns on black paper
-Available in a variety of sets (a selection of 6 sets, a 12 set, and a 24 set)
-Seem to be around the same price point as the original pencils
It appears as though Derwent's website no longer shows the original pencils, but it's difficult to say if the original pencils have been phased out of production and entirely replaced by the 20th anniversary pencils. It is possible that it will be increasingly difficult to find the original metallic pencils if this is the case.

Fab! I searched for videos on metallic pencils because I'm drawing birds in my garden including starlings and magpies, and wondered if metallic pencils might work for the iridescence. It was a great bonus that your demo piece was a magpie!
Thanks for watching and commenting :D They're great fun and are perfect for a more illustrative take on iridescence! To really capture a realistic sheen, I find that high contrast is vital- it can be a it difficult to get high contrast with these pencils alone as they're all a similar value. I really do need to experiment blending them more with other pencils though- perhaps then I could get best of both worlds!
Well, Ms Claudia, because of you, I was up all night watching your videos, lol. Extraordinary. I'm addicted. I got a set of those, not tried yet, so this video was so very helpful. You really don't miss one thing in your reviews.

An interesting review which sent me scurrying to check my Derwent Metallics. I bought a blister pack of them years back when the barrels were painted completely in the core colour. I was intrigued by your info that your 12 pack were water soluble, these earlier pencils of mine aren't water soluble, but still a very good pencil.
Intriguing to hear that they weren't water soluble before! It's good to know that Derwent make it at least somewhat apparent if there's been a significant change to the formula in that respect.

Yep, whilst it's a cool feature that this old version of the metallic pencils are watersoluble, it's odd that it destroys the primary feature of the product.
Love your work, tutorials or reviews really just anything, your voice is so soothing your a true pleasure to learn from. Oh and you never make me feel dumb that's really nice. Not that anyone means to but other common UA-cam artists whom I love to learn from do sometimes sorta slam others without meaning to be just assuming everyone does things"their" way or should have some certain amount of knowledge already if they are daring to watch their tutorial.

Your reviews are always so nice and organized. Thank you for making so many Derwent reviews. I always see their products on different art supplies shops but I haven't actually seen many people using them. Where I live, the best option I have for a wax-based pencil is the Colorsoft range. Have you thought about making a review for those?

I have a few Coloursofts bought singly and I love them for colouring with. The secret is to use a decent sharpener. I use an M+R brass version and it hasn't let me down yet. They do wear down quicker than - say - Polychromos and their newer Procolours, but I've been using them for a couple of years now and love them all. I do like to mix pencils as I don't do anything fancy like your good self. I might do one day though, as you're such a good teacher!
Thanks for the tip! I've recently purchased the Derwent Superpoint sharpener and the points they create are bordering deadly- I think this will be alright for the Coloursoft. Nothing wrong with mixing pencil brands- if anything it's a good thing; increases your range of colours and I also like to use different brands for different things (depending on their properties). I'm glad you like my videos, makes me very happy to hear that you think that I'm a good teacher! :D

You can also use colored pencil touch up texture with any pigment including metallic pearl-ex pigment. I tryed metallic blue pearl ex and it was just as metallic as acrylic paint if not more metallic. I would use it on the final layers though because it's a little bit slicker to draw on than the titanium white that the touch up texture comes with.
SpontaneouslyCrazzy Awesome tip! I own the whole range of Perfect Pearl pigments from the days when I was into Polymer Clay. I've tried mixing them in with watercolour which seems to work well too, but I do need to check to see if I can find any lightfastness ratings for them.
I have a feeling that the Derwent Metallic pencils wouldn't be particularly shiny in this application though (e.g. by sanding the pencils tip to create loose pigment). Yay for shiny things though :D

I just bought the Caran d'Ache Luminance 84 wooden box set and WOW, the quality of the box they come in is REALLY nice, fitting for the pencils certainly worth the extra cost if you can afford them. I also bought the Polychromos pencils in the box set and though I like how the two shelves are tiered the box quality has nothing on the Caran d'Ache and the sheer length of the case makes them really quite inconvenient. If I was to buy them again I would get the cardboard box set as the box is just to big to fit on most peoples desks at least without shifting a lot of stuff, It probably would be much better if it had three tiers of shelves making the overall length of the box much shorter.
I grind them into powder then mix it with powder watercolor...looks really cool. also, rubbing alcohol to mix.

I find the silver to be a very hard point. I don’t not much like the yellow either, but the other colours especially, the copper and bronze, give an excellent coverage. Thanks for this informative video!
Thank you very much, Christopher! Glad you found it useful. Have you tried out Derwent's new range of 20th anniversary metallic pencils? They're quite different- softer, more pigmented with a better metallic sheen- and the yellow is slightly less green looking. Another bonus is that they've increased the colour selection to 24- and all but 4 score a Blue Wool rating of 8! They're not watersoluble like the ones shown in the video, however.

Silver is a harder metal than gold and i've found it the same with all metallic pencils. They probably use an alloy in the silver shades so that will be harder still.

I wonder if anyone else have this problem, but it looks like, the gold, antique gold and bronze pencils go wrong after like a year? I tried to make some small swatch with them as I brought some cheap pencils in Aldi, and wanted to compare, but these pencils were so hard like I scratch the paper with actual wood. They left much lighter trace on the paper.

Thanks for the helpful review! Love your magpie! Why does your pastelmat deal with water?! I had the problem with Clairefontaine pastelmat that the sandy surface dissolved leaving a blank base that could not be filled with pigments.
Corvus Corone Thank you very much! As far as I know, Clairefontaine pastelmat has always been able to deal with water and solvents. The problem you're experiencing sounds an awful lot like the issues that come with using Sennelier Pastelcard (I believe) where the surface will wipe off even with the slightest moisture. (I've heard people say that they avoid blowing off pastel/pencil dust, or even sneezing in the vicinity as tiny droplets of saliva are enough to lift the surface!)
OMG, SORRY, of course, Claudia, you are right. It was Sennelier Pastelcard that was rubbish, not the Clairefontaine. Oh God, maybe i should delete my comment, so as not to start any rumours.

No need to delete your comment :) I'm sure there are other people who have the same or similar question. I've seen some beautiful results with Pastel Card (check out "Bokkei" on youtube, she uses it a lot), but I've personally yet to try it- but the risk of the surface becoming permanently damaged is a little daunting.

Hi! Check the video at 7:30 for how the pencils appear on white paper. I include a list of what paper (and other materials) I use in the description box.
Paper weight doesn't really matter unless you plan on using water to dissolve these pencils, in which case you'll want to use thicker/heavier paper such as watercolour paper.

They are very different pencils! I think the metallic set is more fun, but the black and white set is much more useful. :)

In my opinion, the Derwent Drawing pencils aren't best suited for fine detail as the cores are very soft and broad. I'm not a pastel artist though so I don't feel like I have the experience or expertise to suggest another product for you.
Are there any templates one could download for color swatching vs having to actually draw the lines in a suitable paper than you know of? Thnx in advance!
You can always search for google images e.g. "blank swatch chart derwent metallic". When swatching out watersoluble media though I don't think making a print out is really the best option in most cases- at least my printer struggles with any paper that's thick enough to tolerate water, and the ink isn't waterproof.
If I'm going to be honest, for a simple swatch chart, drawing the lines is the easy bit- you don't even have to draw lines if you're not fussed about neatness. It's the colouring that's most time-intensive, especially for larger sets!
Ok - but my question was not specific for watercolours as it is not a medium I use. I’m looking to swatch 120 FC Polychromos - that’s a lot of swatching! Lol But thank you for your response. :-)
@@jaydee177 I responded talking about watersoluble media because the video you're commenting on is about watersoluble pencils :)
The gridding is definitely the easiest part with the 120 set- it probably took me 20 minutes tops whereas the swatching itself took about 2 hours if I were to hazard a guess. An 8x15 grid works well in terms of box dimensions I think- I used a 24x30cm piece of pastelmat (which is another point to make- I really recommend swatching on the paper you intend to most frequently use the pencils on).
The part I really didn't care for was writing the colour names- instead I just wrote the colour number (and amount of stars it had) in the corner of each box. I also often come up with shorthand for common colour names and descriptors (D. Cad. Y. for Dark Cadmium Yellow).
It seems that a person can use conventional pencils or luminescent colors to get the same effects as these metallic pencils. I think they're a bit gimmicky.
Yep, they're a bit gimmicky- a lot of Derwent products are designed for the fun of it rather than practical application in most professional artwork. But I disagree with your first statement- the metallic/glittery sheen that is obtained with these pencils is not replicable with standard coloured pencils. But of course, if you're trying to render a metallic surface realistically, regular coloured pencils are best.
I bought them last year and I can not recommend them. They are very scratchy. I also have the Derwent Artists and they are very good.

The accent I have is pretty common in the south of England though, and it's a pretty big place :)
The tests are good, shows they are not for me, they dont particularly look metallic to me. Great bird picture, I didn't know you had magpies in the UK, or Norway? they are quite different to our Magpies in Australia, ours are a much taller slimmer bird and are just black and white, very intelligent, have been recorded to have a memory of at least 20 years! remembering the scientist 20 years after the person first visited its nest for an experiment on swooping when the person returned. Nope- as I mentioned later on in the video, if you're looking for a highly metallic result these are not the item I'd recommend- but are convenient given that they are mess free and in a transportable pencil form.
I'm familiar with the Australian magpie, I've seen some videos of some essentially tame ones!
There's a huge variety of magpies in the corvid family, but this one is the Eurasian Magpie. Related only to the Australian Magpie by name- Australian magpies aren't corvids.
We have huge amounts of magpies where I live, at times we've had 10 at our bird feeder and we're constantly trying to invent ways of preventing them from stealing all the seed. They're too smart though. :P
Ours are also just black and white, but they have an iridescent sheen on their wing and tail feathers. They often will appear blue or green, but if the light catches them just right you also see golds, reds and purples!
I am sure this vedio is informative and probably lovely but. 4 hours is way to long. I used to watch long demos but bypass them .. I can't see spending hours and hours of a day watching them . The chatting and laughing is annoying . Sorry ..dont mean to be
nasty . If there would be some much shorter ones I would watch again .

Joan, this video isn't 4 hours long, I think you may have commented on the wrong video?
I only have three videos (out of over 100 on my channel) that are longer than an hour long, and these are recordings of livestream events.
You can also check the length of the video before hitting play- the length will show in the bottom right of the preview. You can also avoid any video that has "Livestream" in the title, as these no doubt will be longer and chattier than edited and sped-up videos. That way you can avoid the content you don't like.
Different strokes for different folks though, Joan! Everybody's entitled to their opinion. :)
