  • In this video I show how I designed an HO scale model railway turntable using a stepper motor, an arduino, and my 3D printer. I also discuss the challenges I ran into during the design process as well as the solutions I found.
Since this video has been made the code has been refined and a new version of the controller has been made. See later videos in the series for more information. The code is available at the following link.

Hi, you´re making my dream come true with this fantastic project !. Congrats from the bottom of my heart, my friend !.
It would be very instructive if you can lead us about how you designed the electronic part,. I mena, to the one of us not as clever as you are in electronic projects.
Thanks in advance, and many greetings from Chile, South America, John.

      Hey John,
Glad you are enjoying the project! I was actually thinking of re designing the main control panel, if I do that I will be sure to make a video about it.

After researching the model railroad forums and not finding anything as current and deftly designed as this, I would beg you to scan some of the forums and offer your video. Secondly, are you sharing you arduino code at all?

can you show the connection of the slip ring and the main shaft? (its all hidden under the gear reduction bracket)

    • @orangelabengineering2923

Good afternoon Alan. The slip ring has three set screws at the top that center the main shaft and keep it from falling through . The bottom of the slip ring is the same except it does not have set screws. I don't think youtube allows me to add photos in the comments section. In my next video on this project Ill be sure to get some good shots of the turntable shaft & slip ring connection.

Nice, do you have drawing on the electronic controllpanel?

Good afternoon Tom, thank you for watching. I do not have a wiring diagram of the control panel, sorry! The design mostly consisted of wiring an arduino input to a button or an arduino output to an LED, all of which I labeled in the code so a wiring diagram wasn't needed. In my next video I will show the progress I have made since this video and spend a bit of time on how I created the control panel.

@@orangelabengineering2923 Ok, im working on a simular project. I have and i 3D printed my turntable and are looking to controle it by arduino, stepper motor, and buttons for different tracks.

Very cool Tom! This is the same concept I am working towards as well. I have recently completed the beta version of this project and am planning on installing it in my layout. I will make a "part 2" video that shows how I designed my control panel as well as what type of stepper motor configuration I found to be reliable for my setup.I should have "part 2" video up in the next week or so. Good luck with your design.

Can you share the stl files for the Gray Motor and gear supports

Sorry I can't. I lost my old Fusion 360 password. Those files are lost in the cloud.

Instead of flipping the gator clips couldn't you have just switched the direction button on the transformer to reverse the polarity? I see part 2 brb... :-)
