Ok, but the question is... does it make Demeter the bad guy? That's one of my greatest peeves when I'm reading and Hades and Persephone retellings Also, it is kind of refreshing to see other kinds of Hades that isn't the hyper masculine mafia boss/heartless bastard that only loves one person, another of my greatest peeves.
Demeter is actually quite a complicated character in the book, which I liked a lot when reading. My video coming out on Sunday dives a little more into Demeter though so check that out for more details when it goes live :)
I dont think that anyone can be defined as just good or bad. People are too complex for that! Demeter is a great reprensastion of that. She tried her best to give Pershephene the best life possible with the circumstances. But she didnt realize the negative conseqentions of those actions. Maybe she did and just ignored them or didnt even care, that does make her worse. Or maybe not because the didnt know what else too do. This topic is very complex.😅😊
In the Trials of Apollo, Rick Riordan has a version of the goddess Styx which is quite interesting, especially pertaining to the whole “consequences of breaking a Styx oath” thing she has
I only heard of this book a few weeks ago in a book group. I wasn't sure if I would order it because I'm an American and can only get it through Waterstones, which can be a bit expensive for a book (just because of shipping). I have read 0 of these retellings and am not a huge fan of YA books, but your review convinced me that I definitely need to read this one. So thanks for doing such a thorough review. I really want to read this now.
Firstly I like you review of the book as it does not spoil anything. Yes, keeps the myth structure in place and makes the background the how-it-came-to-be the re-telling park. For a YA book it really surprised me as I don't like many I tryed. I am ordering my copy as I have read e-book 3 weeks ago. Now. To the SPOILER COMMENT OF MINE!!! Please read the book than come back and read! Yes, the kidnapping stays in place but it was Persephones and Hades decision toogether to do it that way [read the book]. That is also how this Hades is diefferent than than myth & other books. To Hades...yes all you sad...BUT MY CRITIC is that Hades gets a back seat after the half of the book. The way I see it, it looks like Hades wants and is fine with that as well... Persephone basicly hijacks the book for herself. 🤔 she is the extrovert and he the introvert 🤔. Mix feelings as I do like this side of Hades. But he is lees present as I sad. River Styx and Tempest personification is more of a given and lees wow. It shows, to me, how much for-thought Bea put is drafting the storyline 👏 as the book takes 70% !! of time in Underworld! so who are we to meet and talk there? Wo can "live" there: wind deity. Even the dead is given some form of comunication. While the book starts with none choices given to Persephone it gives her place and space to do just that. Even those with a price to it are her own! Aaand the book makes at the end the full circle and I love that part so much! Someome asked about Demetre: it is more along mother-wants-best-this-is-the-only-way-I-know-how.
i'm always super hesitant about YA retellings because i've read so many i don't like, but this actually sounds compelling. i might have to give it a try.

If you do, let us know what you think!
Sis want Antigone by Sophocles
Possibly gods behaving badly for the River Styx? Maybe I'm misremembering and she's not personified/only briefly appears
Oh!!! I’ll have to give that a little reread!
Don’t like the troupe 😂 but I might give it a go
I saw the book and immediately thought: "This has to be about feminism." I was not dissapointed. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
