Brilliant playing!
I love this solo. I bought a DVD of that concert when I was in college, probably around 2004. In a sea of amazing improvised solos, Roditi's solo on A Night In Tunisia is my favorite!
I have the DVD too! Yeah, Arturo's solo shook everyone, but Claudio's solo break really stuck with me.
This solo is great! (trumpet key disclaimer)--Moving between altered ideas (c melodic minor) and pentationic ideas over the F7 chord and the E harmonic minor ideas. There is wonderful rhythm and syncopation in this solo and the natural connection and development of musical ideas. but especially THAT SOUND. I have always loved Claudio Roditi's SOUND! his tone, time....yes a great solo for any trumpeter to learn and study!
Claudio was a genius! I really miss him.
Real talk. Underrated master! The way he leaves space, set ups interactions and play with dynamics near at the end, what else could you want from a soloist?
Yeah, a really thoughtful soloist. I think I should have included the dynamics because that's pretty rare in a jazz solo.
@@RobEgertonJazzTranscriptions Dizzy was someone who used dynamics a lot.
I remember this well as I was there! Claudio’s solos were the highlights of an amazing evening - everyone was superb, even Steve Turre’s Seashell playing. Incredible arrangements and I’ll never forget the power and swing of that band.
Loved it so much I saw them in Bristol too although that night was a bit spoiled for me as we were sat a couple of rows behind someone who just wanted old school Dizzy bebop and stood up and shouted “Play Ornithology”. You do get some characters at jazz gigs!
Great story! I'd have loved to have been there, but I was a bit young and not yet into jazz.
Dizzy Gillespie and The United Nation Orchestra live at The Festival Hall, London
I saw this band a couple of nights later in Bristol. We went to see Dizzy and Arturo, but were also knocked out by everyone else. This was my favourite solo on Tunisia from that gig. The bravery to do something so different to the others and the relentless swing.
I went to both of these too. Claudio’s solos were amazing and IMHO better than Arturos. Still the best big band concerts I’ve ever seen.
I remember, as kids, my old buddy Bryan Davis playing me this album when I was first getting into jazz. Still love it today!
Claudio was the man!
Genius - Thanks Rob for putting this up. Challenge accepted!
He went so out there that he was all the way in there !
Bravo!!!!🎉🎉🎉
Hi Rob, hope you're well. Do you remember when this concert first aired in the UK? Everyone went mental about it for months! Great in every way. This solo is absolutely amazing. Great work on all the transcribing mate. All the best.
Hi, Julian - all good here! I remember Bryan playing me Arturo's unbelievable solo on a coach trip with our youth orchestra. I grew to look forward to Roditi's more though! Hope you're well?!

I don't agree with the title. I hate half of the phrases and the others are not impressive.
