The people that gave it a bad critique probably don’t understand that we are suppose to be confused the first 5 episodes because we see everything from Danny’s perspective. So we are on the same page as him and we are going through the same confusion and confrontation he did. After the fifth episode we start seeing the truth, it fills in all the empty holes in Danny’s memories. This is an incredible show that has so many hidden meanings also. Truly a masterpiece and deserves so much more recognition. If only this show dropped on Netflix or hbo with a good promotion team
It's the critics, the people who critique movies as a job, who gave it bad reviews. The majority of people who weren't critics and just audience members rated it extremely highly. The gap between critics and audiences is getting bigger and bigger every year. Every single time there's a terrible movie the audience is say is boring or done to death, it's rated highly by critics. And every time there's a good movie that is enjoyed and beloved by the audience it's panned by the critics. I think the critics just don't know what they're talking about anymore. They are pretentious and snobbish.
So, two theories correct. One that Adam was also an alter. 2. For Adam to exist before marlin came, it meant something had happened before too and it was his father. I was so glad seeing that he did not simply forgive his mother. It won't be easy to forgive an accomplice of the crime specially if the accomplice is someone wo was supposed to protect you. During the last scene I kept waiting for a plot twist which I am so thankful, never came. It was one satisfying ending. All I want to say is, I hope no one, no child or adult goes through so much pain ever. I hope all parents have more sense than candy. This project really effected me deeply. Good work. Kudos to Tom and Amanda for such great acting. Hope to see this duo together again too.
Kind of late to this comment, but we have d.i.d., and our mom's name is candy too. Isn't that just the most bizarre thing you ever heard. Unfortunately, we also were tortured. But we are doing the best we can each day.
Adam did exist before Marlin came around. Whether that was just an imaginary friend or a true alter is left to the viewer to decide in my opinion. Candy confirms that Danny's real father was violent just like Marlin. I personally think he was sexually violent towards Danny as well and physically violent towards Candy and so she finally built up the courage to leave. It would also explain the unseen alter of his father. The father he wanted to come save him. Kind of like a Mr. Robot/Mr. Alderson situation in Mr. Robot. So when Candy finally meets Marlin she doesn't want to believe that she could let this be happening again. And so she was scared to leave. She was scared to be alone. Danny was already gone, and she'd rather be hurt and have those tender moments with Marlin than be left alone with nothing but the fact that she failed multiple times to protect her child. I've been through trauma myself and I try really hard to relate to Candy and I can see it, why she did what she did but, I've also experienced what Danny did from a different family member and my mom, albeit didn't know, still did nothing to protect me. Neither did my dad but I truly believe he would have had he known. He still doesn't. My mom acts a lot like Candy in the way that she's still dismissive of my childhood and teenage years of abuse and early adulthood abuse and just wants me to drop it. So far all of this rambling to say, I'm completely team Danny here and I don't blame him if he never forgives her. I hope he doesn't. I do hope she learns to forgive herself. Making herself a victim for the rest of her life helps nobody and is a disservice to Danny. So yes, Adam has always been there. I'm still not sure what the unpaid debt is. Seen the show a few times, just rewatched it yesterday and just watched this video and still don't get it but I assume it either has to do with Adam enduring the trauma from Marlin or Danny not killing Marlin. I don't know which answer I like better. Sorry for the trauma thought. Your comment and this video got my mind going a million miles a minute so feel free to ignore me.
All in all, I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would after the first reviews came out. It's definitely not nearly as bad as they claimed. We get a really well told story with a few twists, but the highlights for me were the performances, especially Amanda's and Tom's. They shared a lot of minutes together on screen and definitely made the show go up a notch in overall quality. It's worth watching, but I would have loved this more if it were eight episodes instead of ten, it got kind of dragged in the middle. The Rya centered and the courtroom (the one before the finale) episodes were fantastic.
Great series, still don’t understand the critic hate. The ending really got me and made me emotional about the unpaid debt. Fantastic job from everyone involved in the production
I felt such a strong sense of calm wash over me when Danny finished speaking to Candy. The writing team really did a huge service to affected people with that detail. Finally, things are acknowledged. He is so mindful of himself now. He doesn't run. Feelings - at long last - can come and go. I want to give a huge shout out to Stan's character (Danny's lawyer). Him having PTSD placed him in a special position to quickly learn the concepts of DID. Stan would understand that the human brain can dissociate instantly and against a person's control - something that isn't easy to get, understandably.
I think those people must had been familiar with the story and thus felt it took to long. For me which was clueless it didnt feel stretched out at all. I loved it and didnt even get it until last epsiode that even Adam was made up what a shock!!
Wouldn't have made any sense and make Rya just as bad as the others. Danny didn't need a lover. Danny needed exactly what he saw in her: Mother Mary. The mom he always needed because Candy will never be that for Danny.
Danny really meant it when he said to Candy he was glad that she came because that was exactly what Danny needed to hear from his mother - an acknowledgment for the things that happened. And I'm also glad the writer didn't turn it so cliche ie. an adult child simply forgives their parents for being neglectful and abusive. Also, Danny is totally giving me Van Gogh's vibes. For instance: the colour palette used in the paintings was very similar to Van Gogh ie. light and vibrant yellows and blues how he was allowed to paint in the mental facility like Van Gogh did when he was placed in an asylum Candy noticed his best works produced during his stay there just like Van Gogh had produced many of his best works when he stayed at the asylum eg. The Starry Night he also mentioned about looking out the window, liking the change of seasons and how art is therapeutic - these were all references to Van Gogh Overall, I love this show. For once, I no longer associate Amanda Seyfried with Mean Girls.
Agreed. It was one thing when she failed to protect him from Marlin, but she completely crossed the line when she threw him under the bus in the courtroom.
I think Adam is Danny’s inner child, which each of us has. I think Rya realized this and so, when she looked back and saw Danny looking at her from the window, she envisioned Adam standing next to him. In his mind as a child, Danny (“Adam”) believed that letting Marlin do whatever he wanted to do to him would make Marlin not leave his mom. Danny knew his mom did not want to lose Marlin and he did not want his mom to be alone. He sacrificed himself because of his love for his mom. Essentially, he created his alters to be his protectors because his mom could not protect him. Even when he grew up, Danny was subjected to sexual abuse but he allowed it just like Adam did because he wanted it done to him; perhaps because he associated sexual abuse with love. In a way, Danny did not completely get rid of Adam even though he said he had to send him away. I think Danny felt he owed his inner child for helping him survive but he never gave him a chance to be healed. Hence, he felt that there was an unpaid debt and it was his turn to be the guardian angel.
I almost take it as she’s aware Adam was created when his biological father abused him. She never acknowledged the questions outright, just that he’s been gone a while, and was like “a psychologist you said” when pressed about him existing because she knew why
I can't believe people judge a show with 10 episodes by just one scene!! They started making fun of Tom like crazy .. I see anyone who didn't like the show because they didn't understand it at all. As a superficial person
Amazing show! F*ck critics! People LOVES this show! Amazing actors, Tom's acting skills ... just wow! He showed his talent, so deep and emotional acting, his eyes said so much. Amazing!!! And I'll say it again AMAZING!!!
Yeah, I agree. I think the reviews were spot on about it being dragged out and taking too long to get where it was going. The performances were great though, and once the episode Rya was shown, the quality increased by leaps and bounds. I was very invested in the beginning, fell off by episodes 4 and 5, and then hooked again after episode 6. I know the backstory was important, but they could have shortened a few scenes and since only Annabelle and the drug dealer really testified at length, they could have condensed all of that down. That said, it's definitely worth a watch and I totally get why Tom Holland took a break and also struggled with alcoholism after filming. This could not have been an easy thing to film.
Just for a moment I thought he made that reunion with Candy up and didn't really happened 😳 Just what he needed to move on. It was the last line of dialogue with Candy "trying again" that confused me.
So, he told her that not quite all of the alters was being merged, that he had a great debt and it now was his time to be a guardian angel. It took her some time to understand but while walking away she realizes he was talking about how he’s now protecting Adam by not merging him and thereby release him from all that bad that has happened since. Also, I think maybe he also suggests he’s trying to remember the experiences with the abuse to spare his «brother».
the ending when danny walked away from rya is literally jack. the hands behind him, jack was also the first one who said stuff about "the guardian angel" to rya and that he mentioned it again rya definitely noticed that. not all of the alters are merged and definitely jack isn't yet, maybe at that time he was the one fronting
For me this film is a real masterpiece! How many pain in this story..What does it mean, when children are in 'wrong family' and cannot protect themselves from sick adults.. This story is as hard as 'joker story'..The same tragedy... Thank you for this work for all the team! Thank you,Tom,for Denny!
watched this season few days ago.. literally Tom's acting was excellent 👌 and tht Psychologist Rya , really liked her character, how much concerned she was , even his own mother didn't come forwrd to protct him , but she risked her own career for this case.. i jst loved this show❤❤
Good show; however, I just couldn't get over the fact that this story was inspired by a man that committed armed robbery, raped 4 women and (possibly) murdered 2 people. Not as noble when framed in that reality.
@@EwokNoelle it's just interesting that they didn't bring that up. They only brought up the (somewhat justifiable) violence committed by his altars... Not the predatory violence. It's almost as if they were trying to steer us into a specific emotion rather than just telling the truth.
@@eddiemalvin / SPOILER ALERT / I agree, it would have been way more difficult for the audience to be compassionate with Danny if his "criminal side" had been shown as well (even though those crimes were committed by his alters). In the series, we only see him has a victim (of rape), and the moment he shoots on his step-father can't even be seen as a crime since the latter was a predator, and was despicable. The series would have been more complex and disturbing if Danny had been depicted more realistically, but personally, I still really liked it, and the actors were great.
It's not a direct retelling of Billy Milligan so no, most of this is made up and not at all related other then the mental disorder it's based off and the fact he had over 21 personalities, but Split is also inspired off his case very loosely
it would ruin a lot of arcs, specially since he's had enough ppl take advantage of him, so while she has no ill intentions, she would know that she had a very diff position in his life to turn that romantic now (unethical/unprofessional). Not to mention the age gap, she's more like a young aunt/matronly/mentor-like figure to him.
