Tell us about your show on SWU:
When Swu offered me a summer residency, I couldn’t believe it. My childhood dream was to be a radio presenter, so it’s a huge privilege and a big full circle moment. One of my biggest passions is exploring and sharing music history, so I’m excited to have this platform, and plan to experiment with all sorts of show formats.
My first show was really fun, I played loads of Happy Monday’s, it was great to showcase some stuff I like outside of nightclubs.
In a previous show, I fused trip hop with jungle, I loved how the tracks complimented each other. I’m really excited for my next show on 18th July, where I’ll be joined by the lovely PAB MC for an hour of boom bappy stuff. I will be bringing some of my favourite classic hip hop instrumentals!
Tell us about the dissertation that you’re writing about jungle revivalism in the post-Covid era.
I wrote my uni dissertation on sample use in the initial development of UK Hardcore. Something cool I learned about was the ‘Hardcore Continuum’, a term coined by ethno-musicologist Simon Reynolds. He uses it to describe a constantly shifting musical development within the UK Rave scene, which is a topic he first documented in a series of essays he wrote throughout the 90s. He’s a great writer, he also wrote a book called Energy Flash which discusses some of the same topics.
The original essay is a bit like a time capsule for UK Rave culture. He provides observations on all sorts, the initial development of Breakbeat Hardcore, the development of ragga jungle, problems surrounding ‘intelligent’ stuff, techstep and even 2 step garage. There are seven essays in total, I’ll link them, they’re very palatable and interesting to read.

If colors could make a sound, what would red sound like?
I asked my friend, who thought of stuff like Rage Against The Machine. I can see that for sure, but I think it really depends what shade of red you’re talking about. Sometimes it feels like it would sound like a fire alarm, but if it's a deep wine red, it could sound like some classy jazz, or I imagine a red electric guitar playing big power chords.
