    Do you have any of the things I bought? What do you think? Obviously these are just first impressions and require more exploring. What city should I travel to next? What place has amazing art supplies?

      i just bought old holland watercolours for the first time too. i got golden barok red, because i always buy earth reds, and i absolutely love both the colour and the granulation. im definitely interested in getting more old holland colours- it compares well to the daniel smith deep scarlet, which is my favourite brand. i also got schminke's transparent red deep at the same time, which was supposed to be a very similar earth red, but is waaay too magenta-y when diluted.

      I really wish that companies did opaque and watered down swatches for their colors. They mostly do opaque and barely watered down swatches, if even that.

    • @winterleland3410
      @winterleland3410 5 років тому

      @@zoehongteaches agreed - either that, or the swatches are too small to have any idea how the colour would look in large applications. I can't remember how much you use daniel smith watercolours, but if you haven't tried them much, i can even recomend them for having unusually large and well-graduated swatches!

      I have 2 DS tubes, but they were gifts so I didn't know that about their swatches! I really like them, they're on my shortlist for when I actually do need to shop for a color. Thanks for the tip!

      @@zoehongteaches my pleasure! I love how rich and granulating the daniel smith colours I have are. and the deep scarlet is a colour that literally no other manufacturer provides, despite it being (in my opinion!) the best red pigment out there :) (big claim, I know)

    I do not have any fashion designer knowledge or something relate as well, but I do enjoy your videos and the way you carry the tone of your voice like nonchalant, I do not know how to explain it . My husband and I are heading to Europe in june for cruise and Paris.

    Cool video! Thank you for sharing! I’m from Amsterdam and I’ve got the tracing paper you bought here! I experience the same issues with the tracing paper and didn’t know any better LOL. I thought that was the only tracing paper there is so I’m gonna try to find the type of tracing paper you have to try out.
    1 thing that is handy about the vellum tracing paper is that it’s very sturdy if you have to cut things out to pin with needles on fabric or something. It will last you forever LOL

    I’m from Amsterdam and however i love this video and the stuff on here, i feel like you missed some stuff. There is a very non-touristic art store which is huuuuugeee on the rosengrachtweg ! I always go there and they have the most luxurious and biggest art supply in the whole of netherlands. I’d advise you to go there if you ever think of coming back !:)

    The gray paper is interesting, I look forward to seeing what you create. I don’t paint, and only sketch or draw poorly, and when no other method will convey my message. But I have such respect for that skill set. What I love about your channel is that you take time to respond to most, maybe all comments, even though you have many subscribers. I have a small channel and it really changed my perspective on how much effort is required. 😀. Don’t you just wish there was more time to create? I wish I worked a bit faster, I have time for 1/10 of what I can think of to sew!

    FYI--just in case your question about Davy's grey was NOT rhetorical :)--from Wikipedia: “Davy's grey is a greenish-grey colour, made from powdered slate, iron oxide, and carbon black named for Henry Davy.", and from Handprint: “Davy's gray was originally a slate pigment developed by Winsor & Newton for an 18th century English drawing master (known for his use of the paint).”

    I recently bought my first old holland paints, since I'm living in the Netherlands and heard so much about them. But when I wanted to try the orange I bought, a lot of I presume Arabic gum came out before any pigment came out. There was so much Arabic gum that I couldn't mix it properly with the pigment that eventually came out and I almost felt like I should use half the tube to even it out. But I too had a small mixing pallet like the one you're using in the video, so I didn't really want half a tube of paint sitting on there :')
    The paints are still really pretty, and I can see why so many people love them, but I guess I'll be sticking to my m graham and meijello paints haha. This first experience was kind of a bummer

    • @RamoArt
      @RamoArt 5 років тому +1

      Maybe the store you bought from doesn't sell many of those tubes (unpopular color, high price etc) and you got one that was on a shelf for many years. I wouldn't necessarily blame Old Holland, but I understand that a bad first experience can turn someone off forever.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 років тому +1

      Yeah, that's why I always buy 2 or more of a brand, in case one is messed up. That's a bummer about the orange and the separation. I don't think I'll reach for Old Holland again either, with the goopy separating green and random shimmery purple.

    • @CaitlinBongers
      @CaitlinBongers 5 років тому

      @@RamoArt thats a possibility too! The store was very small and hidden away outside one of the less popular cities and they had a lot of different brands watercolors so I can't imagine they sell a lot of all of them. And since they also had the full range of colors there was so much to choose from I had a struggle picking the ones I liked out. I had 2 other colors which were almost fine (still a little bit of gum came out before the pigment).
      I wonder how long it takes for those tubes to separate, since I have some winsor and newton tubes that my mother has used 30 years ago and these were still fine. Maybe it's also the storage, upside down vs laying flat?

    Hello Zoe. My laptop died 😭 and I lost internet at home for a while cuz I ran into some hard times and got behind on my bills. All red tape bullshit that I had cut to through. I'm back on track now. I'm going to have to get another laptop. Going to be a couple of weeks. Fortunately I have a piece of shit little tablet that makes my eyes bleed to look at. And I have to use its finger pad which I absolutely loathe! 💩 Call me old fashioned; I hate finger pads. Give me a mouse any day. And I hate this door stop I'm typing on. So that's why I haven't been on much. I try to do things with this, but I wind up with a headache.
    Glad you had fun. Sounds like an awesome trip. This haul video was fun and interesting to watch. The Caran Dache water brush that looks like a marker looks very interesting to me. So does that black watercolor paper. With that watercolor paper and the Posca markers I could attempt a night time urban sketch. There are some areas here in Dayton Ohio that are very colorful at night. So thanks for the inspiration. 💡
    Since the last book I wrote you lol, I've experimented and figured a few things out sketching related. I like white out pens for adding white highlights. They're the most opaque white and easy to control tool I've found for that. I've been told to try titanium white gouache and I will. But the correction pens aren't going to be evicted from my sketching kit. I mean they're inexpensive and can be bought at many stores so they're pretty convenient too.
    I tried some card stock. Found COLORBOK "Marsmallow" (interesting name lol) smooth card stock 78lb/210gsm at Wal-mart. It's pretty thick, very smooth, and none of my water based markers and pens bleed through, show through, or even ghost. Hell I can I use Sharpie's Liquid Highlighters and they don't do any of the above. Those are very juicy, wet highlighters, but when I want hot, stand out colors they're great! Anyways I had the pad cut in half and made into 2 coil bound sketchbooks 36 sheets/72 pages at Staples. It's not artist quality, but it's acid free, lignin free, and does what I need my sketchbook to do. I love my mother. My feelings for those sketchbooks are much greater lol.
    Finally, for the initial sketch lines which I later sketch over, I've been using mechanical pencils with blue, red, and purple colored leads. Blue for foreground, red for background, and purple for elements of fancy (things which aren't actually in the scene, but I add them in). I'm going to buy some Uni Nano Dia leads from Amazon. The Papermate leads only come in packs of 6 lead refills. The Uni Nano Dia packs have 20 pieces. It's not the brand, it's just I need more pieces than 6 lol. Oh I've discovered I love using a battery powered eraser. My girlfriend laughed at it and called it the "epitome of laziness" lol. Maybe it is, but it erases pencil and colored pencil so well! 🙌 I buy Pentel Hi Polymer erasers and cut them into strips that will fit it. Those erase colored pencil even better.
    Anyways, I've figured out to a much greater extent what works and what doesn't. Have a great day and be safe Zoe. 😁

      @zoehongteaches  5 років тому +1

      Welcome back, James! I love the idea of making your own sketchbook with your preferred paper! I don't know why that never occurred to me, especially since I do like spiral bound books! I love the Uni Nana Dias. I got a million last time I was in Japan and still have plenty. I've been using titanium white gouache for years. I would only recommend it if you a. need to cover larger areas that's harder to do with a pen or b. work with different opacities of white.

    • @higherground711
      @higherground711 5 років тому

      @@zoehongteaches There are a few other brands of colored lead refills for mechanical pencils. They all get 3 star or lower ratings on Amazon though. People are saying they break to easily mostly. I wonder if that's really an issue with the other brands or these people don't know how to use a mechanical pencil properly. 😏
      I watched some of your other videos. Question. Is "haute couter" (maybe I spelled that right) only a thing in Paris or is there something similar in the US and/or other countries? I can see why those fashions are coveted. They're very impressive and quite stunning to behold!
