Will that also eliminate the letter-boxing on the sides of the goggle image? I’m confused because the BF OSD section showed the image being full-width, but his goggle view had letter-boxing??
Thanks. I’m sitting here messing with it as I write this. I got mine to go wide with the video setting in the camera config screen (center left stick, yaw right). There’s actually two 16:9 settings, Crop and Full. Crop worked better as Full had a lot of the canopy surrounding the cam in view.
Nice instructional video. I think the only feedback I have is that I would recommend flashing HDZero to latest firmware *before* setting up Betaflight. If the HDZ firmware firmware between your Goggles and Vtx don't match enough (Vtx is newer), you might not even get video on the googles. I had that happen to me once, already.
In that vein ... @Joshua Bardwell, can't you please call them out on not releasing firmware upgrades for the 500mW VTX anymore? Only one with an MMCX plug...
I've used 100% presets, no cli, in my last batches of HDZero builds. Also apply the table so you can show channel on the OSD and use BetaFlight, ELRS, and backpack to integrate with channel & power control.
@ 21:25 even though you are behind the house, the breakup is pretty good AND, just after that when you hit the branch, I could clearly see the leaves fly off. I had started to lose faith in HDZ, but this video put it back at the top of my list. 😎
The breakup lessened once the VTX changed its output power it looks like to me, but I also don't own any HDzero product so idk if that's lockable. Then again, for racing 25mW is all you need
For easy install of gummies, use sharp tweezer thing and pinch the top of gummy and put through the hole, and slide out the tweezers. Takes 2 seconds and don’t have to worry about damaging anything.
Yes, the HD OSD format for HDZero will automatically apply, if you power up the system once. So you don't need to paste it into the CLI manually if you don't want to.
@@JoshuaBardwell I’ll check as soon as I’m back. What i can say is that i had to move the osd elements towards the centre because i fly 4:3 and wanted the osd in picture and not in the black edges.
I'd say the bitrate is the same, they're just using it differently. DJI and Walksnail huse H264/H265 encoding, so it looks at similar pixels between frames. HDZero doesn't. Each frame is individually encoded AFAIK. This means when you have a static frame, like on a bench test, DJI & Walksnail will look way better. But as soon as you start moving quickly (which, of course, is what we're doing the vast majority of our flights), DJI and especially Walksnail get "smeary"/fuzzy as the bitrate can't hold up anymore. HDZero will still look just as good as it did on the bench. Pause a video midway through a rapid turn when someone's flying Walksnail and look at how much detail you can see, then compare with the same thing with HDZero and you'll see a massive difference.
I'm sure I gonna invest in HDzero for my quads < 5". I'm not sure I want DJI or Walksnail for my 5". DJI seems to have better video but Walksnail is more secure for future because you know you have high compatibility with Betafligh ans so on. On DJI you never know what restrictions you will have and if you need to buy more DJI stuff from their ecosystem "to keep it alive"...
If you don't want HDZero and are concerned about DJI's behaviour, I think WS is the better alternative since they are developing a fixed latency mode. Take into account that WS will look better than HD0, specially on a still image. Then when on the move, it's almost the same. I see most pro gamers preffer having more frames at the expense of resolution, if that's a good analogy for you.
To have less breakup you could try disengaging dinamic power from ELRS. At least it was an issue on some ELRS versions, I don't know if it's already fixed. Worth a try
Nice. It will be even nicer when the resolution improves. Too bad I couldn't wait for the HDzero goggles, anymore, and bought the Fatshark Dominators... something tells me I'll be purchasing the HDzeros, as well should they ever become available....

Hey JB, realy great helpful video, but i have a question, i got the v3 and the nano 90, my ESC is the foxeer reaper slim 60A and my FC is F722 V4 mini MPU600, the Flight controller doesn´t have the DJI plug, so i´m not sure how to solder, btw i´m plannig on using a ELRS receiver.
If you select something other than HD on the OSD page and save, then switch back to HD, it seems to work. Not sure why that is necessary but should mean the canvas settings are not needed.
I don't think that actually sets the canvas dimensions correctly. The canvas will appear to be 16:9 but the horizontal and vertical resolution does not match the HDZero system's expectation. In my experience you always need to put the canvas lines in, except if you are using WTFOS, which correctly communicates the dimensions to the FC.
I’m not an expert in betaflight, if I use your pastepin for the OSD layout.. It’s literally just the OSD layout right? whatever other settings i’m using on betaflight will remain?
I must admit I find this hard to agree this is always better than analogue, though I have to say I've never actually tried HDZero myself, and it's only my opinion. I have done an awful lot of racing though, mainly in vehicles with wheels, and a little bit with (small) quads, though not official racing series, just among like minded others. The thing is, and this is just my opinion, my experience is that detail doesn't much matter, latency, certainly yes, but not detail. The reason is that you are not looking out for the unexpected - twigs etc in quads, that is freestyle's domain. You know exactly what to expect, where the course goes, what obstacles are where, what shape everything is, none of it is unexpected. What you need to do is be spacially aware of where you are in relation to them, and that does not require detail, just the big picture, in fact you have no time to see detail. I dont, anyway. It may be that the lower latency is significant, overall time loop from sticks to Rx to FC to response to camera to Vtx to goggles is what is important, I think. 60/90Hz will improve that potentially - if there aren't other latencies - but whether it is sufficient to make a real difference, I don't know, not having tried it. But there's weight. That VTx quotes 5.5g, my limited checks indicate typical HDZero cameras seem to be 8.5g, need to throw in an Rx plus wire, so say 15g in all. My typical analogue Rx/VTx/camera combination comes in at just under 4g. On a 5" that may not be enough to be significant, don't know, haven't got one, but it absolutely is on a small craft. If the craft was 200g AUW, that is over 5% and I am certain that will be measurable. If it was smaller, it will get more significant. Maybe in official racing series there is a minimum weight limit, I wouldn't know, but we have no lower limits. The cost is also quite a lot higher but one could argue that if going out and out for performance, this level of cost difference may not be relevant. If it were a question of just better or worse video, and all other factors were the same, the answer would be obvious - go for the better video. But, there are all those other factors, and therefore the overall package needs to be considered. So, it's analogue for me until the weight comes down a lot. Unfortunately though, I expect digital in the end is going to force analogue out of the market, so one will be forced that way. That is the way of it.

@@JoshuaBardwell Fair point. But throw in an Rx and some wire and it's still around 10g or a bit less, then, I guess? Still more than 4g. My point is really weighing pros and cons.
