  • In the week in which we learned what the final fixture at the Grand Old Lady will be, the latest episode of Goodison Park: My Home sees ECHO Everton reporter Chris Beesley speaking to a true Blue legend, Derek Temple.
Liverpool-born Temple, 85, wrote himself into Everton folklore when he scored the winning goal in the 1966 FA Cup final to complete a sensational 3-2 comeback victory against Sheffield Wednesday. A prolific scorer in schoolboy football, he had to pick of both his local clubs plus some other top sides vying for his signature ahead of him making his top flight debut at Goodison Park against Newcastle United on March 30, 1957.
Temple, who made 275 appearances and scored 83 goals for his home city side despite losing over two years of his career to national service duties in Kenya, recalls netting twice for Everton in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United’s ‘Busby Babes’ in the season of the Munich air disaster while also offering some refreshingly candid views on the Blues bosses he played under plus several high-profile team-mates and opponents. It’s another magical trip down memory lane for Evertonians who know their history and love nostalgia.

Absolutely brilliant interview. Brought back so many memories of watching him play and I was at so many of those he mentions including being in Bullens Road Paddock when he was fouled by Willie Bell. I went down to Wembley for the '66 is a Final but couldn't get a ticket. Great to hear him talk and confirm my own views of all the players he mentions.

When I started watching Everton regularly in 1960-61 season I always thought players like Derek came along frequently. His superb forward play would show how limited many players are today. Once saw Derek break from the half way line into the Leicester penalty area at the Stanley Park end, and hammer the ball past Gordon Banks in September 1966 in a 2-0 win. It was identical to his winner in the 66 cup final
How lucky we were to have Derek, Alex Young and Roy Vernon in the same team.
All three had a few seasons left in them at Everton, before Harry Catterick sold them.
