We asked Jay Jordan, CEO of Alliance for Safety & Justice, and Melissa Murray, NYU professor of law, to describe how your average person is treated when they’re arrested vs. Trump’s treatment. The poor actually supports the division. They adore the rich and powerful and hang in loyalty to them if they do wrong. Nothing is more evident than the adulation given to Donald Trump. And the gall of Lindsay Graham to beg for donations of $1 or $5 to support legal fees for him. The poor who scream constantly of the pressures of the bad economy, are willing to give their last to support this rich man in his troubles. So, yes the division of society between rich and poor is very much accepted

What good is it being wealthy and privileged if you don't have a routinely oppressed underclass to measure your privilege against? They don't want to just HAVE privilege, they want it illuminated in flashing neon lights. If those without the means got the same courtesies, it wouldn't feel like privilege anymore. A second approach would be to look at what makes people tick - if they feel threatened in their identity or rights. So you know, if you put these two considerations together, you can see why people will react negatively when they're challenged in their sense of self and sense of safety. We can also draw some conclusions on how these very primordial fears have been amped by authority figures and representatives to try and manipulate public perception. In this sense, it would be a very reductionist and not exactly accurate argument to say that ''they're both as bad as each other'', because there's clearly a party here that was expansive over another party's sovereignty and what we're seeing now that Trump was removed, is the reaction to his ''legacy'' of trespassing and disrespect. Having been a prosecuting attorney in the Military, I can say, it’s not a two-tier system. It’s more of a spectrum. It wasn’t just if you were black, but how dark is your skin? Do you talk with an accent? What is your social-economic status? All these factors not only decided if you were ‘guilty’ or ‘innocent’ but also impacted how long you’d stay in jail.
I remember getting a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign. When the city attorney found out I was ‘part of their club’ I was informed I just needed to bring them the ticket before the court date and they would make it go away. I was friends with the district attorney. When he was pulled over for drunk driving, the young policeman was told to simply ‘escort him home and not charge him.’ We do not have equal justice in this country.
