I was talking to my 96yo grandmother (youngest of 13) when I asked about one of her brothers whom I had never heard much about except that he had fought in WW1. She started telling me about him growing up and then told me what she knew about his military service. She also mentioned that when he returned from the war, he spent only a short time near the family in Central Texas before he moved way up in the Texas Panhandle and saw family members only a few more times. She grew quiet for a moment, her demeanor grew noticeably sad, and her eyes welled up before she said, “You know that he died an alcoholic don’t you?” Shocked, I said that I hadn’t. “Yes,” she said, “before he went to France, he never touched alcohol, but when he came back, he stayed drunk most of the time. I know that the reason he moved so far away was because he was ashamed and didn’t want to reflect badly on the family.” She paused for a couple of minutes before she whispered, “He must have seen terrible things in the war that he just couldn’t live with. I always hurt so bad for him.”
My Grandpa fought in Korea. He never talked about his experiences in war. My Grandma said that he was a complete differant person after the war. He talked to me once about the first time he killed a person, and how 2 of his friends were killed right in front of him. Hes turning 91 soon and hes an awesome person!
my uncle fought with the wolfhounds in korea, i heard little bits and pieces of the war from him , i had to put the whole story together over a matter of 20/30 years.,otherwise he refused to talk about it and if he tried ,he would end up crying for hours because of it.

I never got much out of my grandpa. He always discouraged all of us kids from joining the service. But he told one story when I was about to enlist around 18 about "ants coming over the hill".

Mr Gahs, thank you for your sacrifices, and for the hardships you and other young men had to endure in combat. Much respect from the UK. Hearing him talk about the “good” German who “unfortunately died” really reminds you that all these guys are just human, and don’t necessarily view each other as evil creatures. It’s an interesting perspective.

To Mr. Gahs, I’m writing this to you from just outside Southampton/Portsmouth, the docks that you most likely set sail to mainland Europe from for D-Day and the many months that followed on the way to Berlin….I’d just like to express in a few words how much I truly appreciate the hardships you and your brothers in arms went through in order that myself and the millions of others like me could live in peace here in Europe. I can’t ever put it in words how much I actually do appreciate it and also the sorrow I feel in my heart for the horrors you most probably witnessed , apart from what I’ve already said, it’s just to much to put in words. I just hope you know and feel in your heart that if it wasn’t for you and your generation ,well… the world would be a totally different place, who knows how?? But it certainly would. As a Brit I'm humbled by this brave man who like so many put their lives on the line for our freedom, a thank you doesn't seem enough for their gallantry.
America, England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Russia, Free French Greeks and Czech's, Irish, Scots and the countless other warriors of freedom and the Axis powers never stood a chance, they got their asses handed to them by these men.
These guys endured the horrors for most of their lives. Some even died having never talked about their experiences. I read an article that it was only recently that WW2 vets started to talk, because of the importance placed on mental health. That smile was probably the result of decades of coming into terms with the events that he witnessed back then.

I’ve been reading and watching programs and videos the past 15-20 years. We owe so much to these servicemen, their’s and their families sacrifices. I’m a retired Funeral Director, having helped 100’s of veteran families with funerals and interments. Lots of very fine veterans groups, VFW, American Legion
My Dad fought in the Pacific, and I sure wish I could have had this kind of conversation with him. He rarely talked about the War, and I was unable to pry much out of him. God bless them all.

I'm 51 born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand that fine gentle man reminded me of talking to my grandfather my lovely mum's dad New Zealand royal air force Pacific duty and my dad's mum who died 2002 91 year's old she was an English Jew . she was in the balloon brigade during the blitz i have her medels . The things they SAW would put most modern western teen-agers in a mental institution for life my grandmother left England after the war and never went back she lost just about everything positions/ family/friends she told me about burning buildings/people and the noise fear she was an 18 year old girl ...SO NEXT TIME YOUR BEHIND AN OLDER PERSON DRIVING SLOWLY Don't get shirty with them that old slow driver has more than likely experienced stuff that you couldn't imagine in ten lifetimes and if that's how fast they Go they have earned the right to take their time they probably earned your right to live.. they are brave humble HUMANS THANKS GRAND DAD'S AND GRANDMOTHER'S FOR OUR LIVES AND FREEDOM'S CHUR CHUR
My Grandad was killed in action fighting the Japanese in Java in WW2, so never got to know what he went through, however listening to heroes like Mr Gahs tell their experiences with such detail has helped me gain some appreciation. Salute from Australia, thank you for your service.

I wish I could shake his hand, give him a hug, and say thank you. I’ve lost all my grandpas and great-uncles now. They all fought in WWII and all came home and had families. They all brought war home with them as well. We’re here because they were there. Never forget. ❤️🇺🇸

These are great men. My dad fought in Europe with the Royal Artillery, D Day, battle for Caen, battle of Normandy, Nijmegen bridge, northern shoulder of the Bulge, down into Germany, liberated Belsen, and down to the Elbe to make sure the Russians didn’t cross. All my young life and all my adult life I would ask him to tell me his stories and I was always fascinated by them. He was my best friend. Greatest man I’ll ever know. We lost him New Year’s Day 2013, I miss him every day. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Thank you for your service, Mr. Gahs. My dad served with the 4th Armored Division 10AIB, across France and Germany, and was captured by the Germans after the failed raid on the Hammelburg POW camp. I heard some of his stories when he cared to share, which was not often. Dad spoke with similar grace and humility, and always emphasized that he was only doing a job that needed to be done. I knew many of his Army buddies from the 4th Armored, and they were the salt of the earth. Thank you again for doing the job that needed to be done.
My father by some miracle went through the whole war from Dunkirk, D day and the the fight into Germany. From some of his stories you realise that they lived literally minute by minute even when they were in what they thought were safe areas. I recall when I was young, many a time hearing him shouting in nightmare sleep, reliving the terrible events. Alas today the young generations have no idea of what they went through and why. Interviews like this should be shown at schools to show that war and freedom is nothing like a console game, it is real and it hurts even those that survive. Unfortunately what they fought for today is a bit disappointing. I just saw a clip/read comments about SJW's and vegans arguing about how animals should stop (their normal behaviou) in hunting and eating meat!! I mean, really?? It's just sad to think that this is the culmination of what these brave allied men and women all fought for!! What a shame, waste of effort - and a tragic loss of life - from the greatest (allied!!) generation the world has seen!! 😔

I was going to bed when I clicked on this video , 37 minutes later I also watched. excellent video. I could picture in my mind as he was telling his story. Mr. Gahs and many like him is the reason, they were the greatest generation.

As a metal detectorist, I often find old coins and relics, including medals and military buttons from the WW2 era. The interviews that you do truly help to bring home the history and the sacrifices our greatest generation made in the fight for freedom. Thank you for putting these interviews together, I have put this on our homeschool list and shared it with my metal detecting community!
These interviews are incredible. It's a great pity that that the generations since these men played their part are totally unaware of what they went through. My father was shipped over to Europe on D+9 at the age of eighteen and I can't begin to understand what he may have gone through until I listened to some of these. He would never talk about it.

Wonderful man. Have you noticed that all of these heroes are humble? My father fought from North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. The war was still on his mind when he took his last breath and said "bury me by my buddies" Thank you Mister Gahs

Yes,these men were our fathers. My dad dropped out of college and became a Marine. He fought all over the Pacific,his last battle was Okinawa!!! A nightmare battle. He returned to college,had 2 kids. We use to play on his cot,hide under his wool combat blankets, this war was full of boys who had never left home,never had gone to another state. A civilian going to war ! I was born 1948,sister in 1947. I used to watch all the war movies thinking I would see my dad,they were just actors.
Thank you for your service Sir. I too am a 83 year old Vet and served two tours in Vietnam, however you are my hero and I look at the WWII vets as the real hero's . I received two purple hearts and was medivaced out. It hasn't been until the last few years that I get that thank you for your service Sir. One can tell when that phrase is genuine when offered. Lately I wear the hats with the units I served with in Vietnam, and occasionally I meet someone from that unit. I even have some young man that will stop me and say thank you for your service Sir. The Vietnam war is now having an effect on me, in that it was such a waste of wonderful young men. I enlisted at 17 years old and I have nothing to complain about, but many of these soldiers were drafted. WWII was the war I think about and am so proud of those who served. Don't get me wrong, I am so very proud of those that served in Vietnam. I attended OCS officer candidate school and was commissioned a 2nd LT and attained the rank of Captain. Had it not been for Vietnam I never would have been commissioned. I never saw it coming, until I reached Ft Lewis Washington. Thanks you for interview world war two veterans greatest generation. My father died 1997 . My father was world war two veterans in pacific campaign from 1941 to 1945 us navy on USS Morris 417 and USS Morrison 560 .
The interviewer summed it up better than I have ever heard before. He pulled the trigger that, unfortunately for him, that made it possible for people like the interviewer, and people like me, to be free. My family came from Germany in the 50's, because of American servicemen, and the other allies, fighting for freedom. Many people do not get it that they were fighting for Germanys freedom as well. My family would not exist if it were not for these men. My wife too, would not be here, as her family was saved by the American forces in Korea. I can not express how much I thank the allies, but especially the American soldiers who sponsored people like my parents, to come to the United States. He was talking about fighting in a 2-story building with Germans on the ground floor below him. Certainly in that situation, it could work, especially if there's a lull in the shooting. But at the great distances at which firefights typically occurred, you simply could not hear the sound. Certainly if you're fighting a squad or platoon sized element, even if you did hear the ping and rushed to attack, there would be another half-dozen or more men whose rifles were not empty. It's certainly not entirely a myth, as this man's personal account (and those of others) proves, but I think it would have rarely come in handy.
A hero defending our country recounting his experience while sitting in front of our flag. I'm thankful and appreciative of their service especially the ones who did not make it home.

Our democracy remained intact and we speak English not German or Japanese. The Japanese did land on what is now the the island of what became Alaska. I know the story about Finland. The Finns were armed with rifles when the Soviets invaded. The Soviets took heavy losses but Finland still fell into the Soviet orbit.
More and more lately I’ve been feeling ashamed of America and how we’ve been treating one another over the past few years, but this man gives me hope that there is still good. The people of that generation really were the "greatest generation". That man is a true badass, whether he would admit it or not. The world would be a much better place if there were more men like him. But sadly that generation is disappearing.
The Family members and those that served during the 40’s understood what sacrifices meant economically and socially. They gave up a lot [with urgency mind you] to make sure a hopeful future was still in tact. Today’s priorities with black and white arguments, left this right that, is an entire waste of time and a road block to our ever-developing infrastructure and culture. We’re really at a standstill today. Pathetic.

I was talking to my 96yo grandmother (youngest of 13) when I asked about one of her brothers whom I had never heard much about except that he had fought in WW1. She started telling me about him growing up and then told me what she knew about his military service. She also mentioned that when he returned from the war, he spent only a short time near the family in Central Texas before he moved way up in the Texas Panhandle and saw family members only a few more times. She grew quiet for a moment, her demeanor grew noticeably sad, and her eyes welled up before she said, “You know that he died an alcoholic don’t you?” Shocked, I said that I hadn’t. “Yes,” she said, “before he went to France, he never touched alcohol, but when he came back, he stayed drunk most of the time. I know that the reason he moved so far away was because he was ashamed and didn’t want to reflect badly on the family.” She paused for a couple of minutes before she whispered, “He must have seen terrible things in the war that he just couldn’t live with. I always hurt so bad for him.”

My Grandpa fought in Korea. He never talked about his experiences in war. My Grandma said that he was a complete differant person after the war. He talked to me once about the first time he killed a person, and how 2 of his friends were killed right in front of him. Hes turning 91 soon and hes an awesome person!
my uncle fought with the wolfhounds in korea, i heard little bits and pieces of the war from him , i had to put the whole story together over a matter of 20/30 years.,otherwise he refused to talk about it and if he tried ,he would end up crying for hours because of it.

I never got much out of my grandpa. He always discouraged all of us kids from joining the service. But he told one story when I was about to enlist around 18 about "ants coming over the hill".

I thought I’d watch a quick five minutes of the interview. 37 minutes later and I’m still here. I could listen to this gentleman talk for hours. Thoroughly engaging, modest, and eminently wise. Mr Gahs, thank you for your sacrifices, and for the hardships you and other young men had to endure in combat. Much respect from the UK.

That pretty much happened to me, too. UA-cam has pretty much wrecked my attention span; it's down to about 12 minutes, which is what I thought I'd give this. But I stayed longer, too.
My grandpa was in WWII and this man reminds me so much of him. Just the logic, strength and wisdom in his voice.
Hearing him talk about the “good” German who “unfortunately died” really reminds you that all these guys are just human, and don’t necessarily view each other as evil creatures. It’s an interesting perspective.
They viewed the ss completly different.

My dad and his friends black men who served in wwII. Dad navy in the Pacific, his buddies in Europe. Bill Herndon at 14 fought in Europe and the Pacific. Ralph Hairston, Joseph Hinson, Walter Hawk, archie Lemon and Bill Herndon, Black men who served to help defend this our country against fascism, Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito.

I’m writing this to you from just outside Southampton/Portsmouth, the docks that you most likely set sail to mainland Europe from for D-Day and the many months that followed on the way to Berlin….I’d just like to express in a few words how much I truly appreciate the hardships you and your brothers in arms went through in order that myself and the millions of others like me could live in peace here in Europe.
I can’t ever put it in words how much I actually do appreciate it and also the sorrow I feel in my heart for the horrors you most probably witnessed , apart from what I’ve already said, it’s just to much to put in words.
I just hope you know and feel in your heart that if it wasn’t for you and your generation ,well… the world would be a totally different place, who knows how?? But it certainly would.

It is a coping method. Lots of veterans who have been in combat behave similarly.
These guys endured the horrors for most of their lives. Some even died having never talked about their experiences. I read an article that it was only recently that WW2 vets started to talk, because of the importance placed on mental health. That smile was probably the result of decades of coming into terms with the events that he witnessed back then.

I’m 67, and never been in the armed services.
I’ve been reading and watching programs and videos the past 15-20 years. We owe so much to these servicemen, their’s and their families sacrifices. I’m a retired Funeral Director, having helped 100’s of veteran families with funerals and interments. Lots of very fine veterans groups, VFW, American Legion
My Dad fought in the Pacific, and I sure wish I could have had this kind of conversation with him.
He rarely talked about the War, and I was unable to pry much out of him. God bless them all.

I'm 51 born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand that fine gentle man reminded me of talking to my grandfather my lovely mum's dad New Zealand royal air force Pacific duty and my dad's mum who died 2002 91 year's old she was an English Jew . she was in the balloon brigade during the blitz i have her medels . The things they SAW would put most modern western teen-agers in a mental institution for life my grandmother left England after the war and never went back she lost just about everything positions/ family/friends she told me about burning buildings/people and the noise fear she was an 18 year old girl ...SO NEXT TIME YOUR BEHIND AN OLDER PERSON DRIVING SLOWLY Don't get shirty with them that old slow driver has more than likely experienced stuff that you couldn't imagine in ten lifetimes and if that's how fast they Go they have earned the right to take their time they probably earned your right to live.. they are brave humble HUMANS THANKS GRAND DAD'S AND GRANDMOTHER'S FOR OUR LIVES AND FREEDOM'S CHUR CHUR

My Grandad was killed in action fighting the Japanese in Java in WW2, so never got to know what he went through, however listening to heroes like Mr Gahs tell their experiences with such detail has helped me gain some appreciation. Salute from Australia, thank you for your service.
I’m sorry for your loss, MW. Your granddad was brave and unselfish to risk his life for the freedom of so many future generations including me, my children, and my children’s children. (My great grandfather fought in WWI.)

D Day, battle for Caen, battle of Normandy, Nijmegen bridge, northern shoulder of the Bulge, down into Germany, liberated Belsen, and down to the Elbe to make sure the Russians didn’t cross. All my young life and all my adult life I would ask him to tell me his stories and I was always fascinated by them. He was my best friend. Greatest man I’ll ever know. We lost him New Year’s Day 2013, I miss him every day. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Thank you for your service, Mr. Gahs. My dad served with the 4th Armored Division 10AIB, across France and Germany, and was captured by the Germans after the failed raid on the Hammelburg POW camp. I heard some of his stories when he cared to share, which was not often. Dad spoke with similar grace and humility, and always emphasized that he was only doing a job that needed to be done. I knew many of his Army buddies from the 4th Armored, and they were the salt of the earth. Thank you again for doing the job that needed to be done.

My father by some miracle went through the whole war from Dunkirk, D day and the the fight into Germany. From some of his stories you realise that they lived literally minute by minute even when they were in what they thought were safe areas. I recall when I was young, many a time hearing him shouting in nightmare sleep, reliving the terrible events. Alas today the young generations have no idea of what they went through and why. Interviews like this should be shown at schools to show that war and freedom is nothing like a console game, it is real and it hurts even those that survive. Thank you for your service and glad you made it back home. I narrowly missed going to Nam myself, I turned 18 the summer of 73. The Nam vets I have met said I didnt miss a damn thing.
It is amazing that men like this gentleman survived such combat and lived to tell his stories of history. True soldiers and men of valor.
I was going to bed when I clicked on this video , 37 minutes later I also watched. excellent video. I could picture in my mind as he was telling his story. Mr. Gahs and many like him is the reason, they were the greatest generation.

As a metal detectorist, I often find old coins and relics, including medals and military buttons from the WW2 era. The interviews that you do truly help to bring home the history and the sacrifices our greatest generation made in the fight for freedom. Thank you for putting these interviews together, I have put this on our homeschool list and shared it with my metal detecting community!
These interviews are incredible. It's a great pity that that the generations since these men played their part are totally unaware of what they went through. My father was shipped over to Europe on D+9 at the age of eighteen and I can't begin to understand what he may have gone through until I listened to some of these. He would never talk about it.
You could listen to him all day long. Very humble - almost like, don't thank me - thank those who died.

Wonderful man. Have you noticed that all of these heroes are humble? My father fought from North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. The war was still on his mind when he took his last breath and said "bury me by my buddies" Thank you Mister Gahs

Yes,these men were our fathers. My dad dropped out of college and became a Marine. He fought all over the Pacific,his last battle was Okinawa!!! A nightmare battle.
He returned to college,had 2 kids.
We use to play on his cot,hide under his wool combat blankets, this war was full of boys who had never left home,never had gone to another state. A civilian going to war ! I was born 1948,sister in 1947. I used to watch all the war movies thinking I would see my dad,they were just actors.
Thank you for your service Sir. I too am a 83 year old Vet and served two tours in Vietnam, however you are my hero and I look at the WWII vets as the real hero's . I received two purple hearts and was medivaced out. It hasn't been until the last few years that I get that thank you for your service Sir. One can tell when that phrase is genuine when offered. Lately I wear the hats with the units I served with in Vietnam, and occasionally I meet someone from that unit. I even have some young man that will stop me and say thank you for your service Sir. The Vietnam war is now having an effect on me, in that it was such a waste of wonderful young men. I enlisted at 17 years old and I have nothing to complain about, but many of these soldiers were drafted. WWII was the war I think about and am so proud of those who served. Don't get me wrong, I am so very proud of those that served in Vietnam. I attended OCS officer candidate school and was commissioned a 2nd LT and attained the rank of Captain. Had it not been for Vietnam I never would have been commissioned. I never saw it coming, until I reached Ft Lewis Washington. Again Mr. Gahs thank you for your service and thank your family for their support of you....Ken Cpt US Army retired

I had five uncles and my dad serve at that time, including Normandy, Ardennes (Army), Burma (AAF-Flying Tigers) and Okinawa (Navy). I have lived in the shadow of the great sacrifices you all made so that we can live free and enjoy the bounty of our land and people, and the freedom of the lands you fought for. Thanks you for interview world war two veterans greatest generation. My father died 1997 . My father was world war two veterans in pacific campaign from 1941 to 1945 us navy on USS Morris 417 and USS Morrison 560 .
The interviewer summed it up better than I have ever heard before. He pulled the trigger that, unfortunately for him, that made it possible for people like the interviewer, and people like me, to be free. My family came from Germany in the 50's, because of American servicemen, and the other allies, fighting for freedom. Many people do not get it that they were fighting for Germanys freedom as well. My family would not exist if it were not for these men. My wife too, would not be here, as her family was saved by the American forces in Korea. I can not express how much I thank the allies, but especially the American soldiers who sponsored people like my parents, to come to the United States.

He was talking about fighting in a 2-story building with Germans on the ground floor below him. Certainly in that situation, it could work, especially if there's a lull in the shooting. But at the great distances at which firefights typically occurred, you simply could not hear the sound. Certainly if you're fighting a squad or platoon sized element, even if you did hear the ping and rushed to attack, there would be another half-dozen or more men whose rifles were not empty.
It's certainly not entirely a myth, as this man's personal account (and those of others) proves, but I think it would have rarely come in handy.

@@Pikkabuu simply put Hitler had mainland United States on his list of places to take. Those of the greatest generation didn't allow that to happen. Our democracy remained intact and we speak English not German or Japanese.
The Japanese did land on what is now the the island of what became Alaska. Our poorly dressed and equipped soldiers prevented the Japanese from getting a foot hold.
If you cannot read the history or those who sacrificed everything for us and continue to ask questions as you did one of a couple thing are afoot. You are not an American citizen and if you are and have been your entire life for some stupid reason you have chosen to question question things.
Before you post another uneducated question do everyone including yourself do some reading and learn what you can to not post an uneducated questions.
This man is so humble and honest. You can tell he isn't proud of the things he had to do but knew he had to do them to survive. Im really glad he shared his story and hopefully we can all carry a peace of his knowledge with us for the rest of our lives as well. To learn and teach. Thank you for your service anyone who has fought.

Yes so true how could anyone who thrives in these freedoms dislike this story which is not to be forgotten! I would want the one's who dislike this important video front up for the next conflict! I know they wouldn't because they are the ones to stand behind someone else! The stories my grandfather told me when I was young, were nothing short of horrific!

I know the story about Finland. The Finns were armed with rifles when the Soviets invaded. The Soviets took heavy losses but Finland still fell into the Soviet orbit.
More and more lately I’ve been feeling ashamed of America and how we’ve been treating one another over the past few years, but this man gives me hope that there is still good. Even when fighting the worst evil this world has seen, he did so with dignity, pride and honor. Thank you Mr. Gahs, you’re a true inspiration and you’re anything but ordinary. God bless.
The people of that generation really were the "greatest generation". That man is a true badass, whether he would admit it or not. The world would be a much better place if there were more men like him. But sadly that generation is disappearing.
The Family members and those that served during the 40’s understood what sacrifices meant economically and socially. They gave up a lot [with urgency mind you] to make sure a hopeful future was still in tact. Today’s priorities with black and white arguments, left this right that, is an entire waste of time and a road block to our ever-developing infrastructure and culture. We’re really at a standstill today. Pathetic.
