    Slight tangent, but I found it really hilarious when you went, 'what if The Hunger Games had a million POV characters,' because that's literally Battle Royale, by Koshun Takami. Which Suzanne Collins was apparently not familiar with, when she wrote The Hunger Games, but they share a lot of DNA.
    I think I might have to add Immortal Longings to my TBR. It sounds intriguing, even if commits some serious Wonder Woman 1984 sins.

      @MarcelleLeiturasPreguicosas 3 місяці тому +52

      I've read both HG and BR and they have the same premisse but the authors discuss different themes and they also analyze different aspects of oppression. BR is very pro capitalism (which irks me a bit) with a male protagonist that is a little bit of an incel while HG is anti fascism with a woman as protagonist. I'm not saying you don't see the differences, but people that insist Collins plagiarized BR have serious reading comprehension problems.

    • @rightsarentpolitical
      @rightsarentpolitical 3 місяці тому +20

      @@MarcelleLeiturasPreguicosas Agreed 1000% on this - the reasons why it exists, how they explore it, the point behind everyone's choices - oh man, Suzanne Collins absolutely knew what she was doing when she wrote the series, including the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Quite frankly, including the last book I think it should be required reading regarding colonization and the mindset behind dehumanization. It's poignant.
      BR has very different intent and messaging. Literally the only similarity is that there are kids fighting each other but that specific piece is where the similarities end. The entire premise, context, and result is completely different.

    There's a psychological horror movie called Possessor that's all about an assassin who jumps into other people's bodies in order to carry out her hits. It goes into the mental deterioration she suffers, and the conflict of the movie is that her assignment actively fights her.
    It's very visceral and very gory/bloody, but since it's Brandon Cronenberg... yeah, that's pretty much a given.

    I really do think that there's a lot of missed potential with the jumping into NPCs, specifically with disability in mind.
    Like say, if you were to jump into my body, you're gonna be jump-scared by sudden bouts of paralysis. I'm blase about it now because it's my daily life, but it was terrifying at first. It's also still terrifying when one of my legs is suddenly paralysed while I'm walking. There's also the random muscle spasms you have to deal with; one time my hand spasmed while I was holding my phone which made me drop it and panicking, I tried to catch it with the other hand and accidentally flung it across the table, nearly hitting my friend.
    And like, there's so much potential there just within my experience with Functional Neurological Disorder. Imagining a character jumping into a body and suddenly having to adapt to temporary bouts of paralysis whilst trying to accomplish a goal. You can easily see these symptoms (or any other symptoms from different disabilities) suddenly being an obstacle the character would have to face. It would also add richness to the more NPC characters because there would be a moment of like "holy shit, this is their normal". Ahhhh there's just so much there to explore like there could also be conflict if the NPC uses a cane to walk and the main character forgets it. Also just a disabled character hopping into a body that isn't disabled and how that would make you feel; I can't even imagine what it would be like to not be in some pain every moment of my life like that sounds impossible to me.
    I wish more books would grapple with disability in their themes because it so easily adds richness and texture to a story, and damn do we need more disabled voices heard.
    (P.S: I was gonna draw while listening to this but then my cat had other ideas so I've just been fussing her while listening.)

      oh my gosh i'm so glad i'm not the only person who immediately thought to myself, "yet another author forgets disabled ppl exist" because this is EXACTLY the sort of thing which not only could happen if this "ppl jumping" thing was real, it would happen far more frequently than ableds want to think. people go about their lives not even realizing they're disabled in some capacity because it's their normal, their baseline, but also often bc internalized ableism makes them believe that disability is in some way a moral failing, a bad word, and/or shameful in some way. so just imagine someone like that jumping into a completely abled body and suddenly realizing that their own body and life has been harder than it ever needed to be - maybe they had chronic fatigue this entire time and never knew until they jumped bodies for the first time and discovered how much more energy they had to do... literally anything and everything.
      things as trivial as walking up a short staircase, which once felt what they would have described as "mildly uncomfortable" (ever downplaying their own struggles so as not to appear weak, while simultaneously believing everyone felt the same) is a breeze. they can even run up and down the stairs, without so much as losing their breath. they think that perhaps this person is an athlete, or naturally gifted; special, an outlier. yet, many more bodies are much the same way, too many to discount. at the same time, they experience other kinds of disabilities they never game thought to: amputees, blindness, chronic pain, diabetes, POTS, etc etc. as it turns out, the human condition is multi-faceted, and they gain a new appreciation and empathy for others and their own body at the same time.
      aaanyway. thank you for sharing your own personal experience with an "uncooperative" body, to put it mildly.

      I have always had a surreal idea that karmic retribution would be for a variety of people to actually have to suddenly live as the type of person they are "othering", whether someone with physical or mental disabilities, someone who has few resources and fewer contacts for aid, rapist have to experience their victims ' POV, etc. Maybe it would be too much?

    • @kaialexander6806
      @kaialexander6806 3 місяці тому +8

      @@Darkfyyre exactly!!! Even now - after being diagnosed with FND, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic migraines, etc. - I still have moments where I'm like "yeah, but am I really disabled or am I just exaggerating?" which is insane.
      There's so much potential to explore both with an abled character or a disabled character. There's such a wide spectrum of symptoms across the disabled community; there's basically endless possibilities here.
      I only just thought of this because my hay fever nasal spray is in front of me, but would allergies not be something you'd have to prepare for? You'd have to learn how to use an EpiPen just in case. It would also pose difficulties with blending in because what if you reached for something the body you're inhabiting is allergic to? That's a dead giveaway right there.

    okay i actually have a theory on why calla's eyes are royal yellow.
    (tried to get this under a read more for folks who want to avoid spoilers. this is pure speculation on my part so take it with a grain of salt.)
    to avoid confusion, i will be referring to calla by her name and the original owner of the body as "the princess".
    i think it's because calla taking over the princess' body when they were both so young is already an exception to the rule. it's stated at the start of the book that the jumping gene manifests at 12 or 13 and even then it takes someone particularity powerful to jump to a child's body. it shouldn't have been possible for an 8 year old to jump in the first place let alone to the body of another child. throughout the book, however, there are events that contradict the system established in the beginning: the crescent society using qi in ways that shouldn't be possible; anton figuring out how to jump without a flash during the juedou; even leida saying there are qi tactics "that have long been forgotten". so, clearly, the magic system everyone takes as given has more to it. who's to say then that calla's body couldn't retain its original eye color even with someone else's qi being in control?
    this part is far fetched but i think it could also explain the eye color. calla's body still can't be invaded when the other qi should've faded, especially given how powerful she is. i think both calla's and the princess' qi could've morphed in such a way (think something similar to the weisannas' imitation) that the body retains aspects from both of them despite calla being in control. thus, calla's body is now seemingly doubled *and* she still has the princess' eye color.

    One of my favorite sci-fi horror movies of all time I feel like actually handles the subject matter of inhabiting someone else's body so well is possessor (2018) because it actually shows the conflict and chaos between the person who is inhabiting someone else's body without their consent and that actual person who is experiencing it and the ethics of something like this if that makes sense? If you want more thought about this concept then the book Touch by Claire North does that exactly - a being who lives in other people's bodies, in which the issue of their consent is EXPLICITLY faced and absolutely central to the story. I don't remember if disability was an element, but there WAS a very visceral and at times upsetting sense of this person interrupting lives.

There's even a spin-off duology for it. It also made me wonder if I actually did like that first book or not. Because I'm never going to reread it either.
    Edit: (I had to watch this in parts, kid home for the summer) The body jumping thing. The person who jumped into my body wouldn't like it. I have a neurological disorder and am blind in one eye. They'd leave so fast. 😂

    this was so in depth!! i read this book the other day and despite how loaded with plot elements it was, it was so immersive and an amazing read.
    something i noticed was that calla talked about how she identified more with her name and body than with her gender but then that was NEVER talked about again the rest of the book😭 i only wish that had been touched on or fleshed out a little bit more

    It's crazy looking at the Goodreads page after watching this. You actually kinda sold me on this, and I wanted to check it out. Seeing the top comments littered with people criticizing the characterization and chemistry is a jolt. I have no idea where I'd fall on that spectrum, so I'm kind of torn. I guess I'll wait to see what happens with the next book whenever it comes out, especially since I strongly prefer m/m romance to m/f.

    Mindwalker by Kate Dylan also did this body hopping thing! Not an often talked about book from what I can tell (probably because it's just not very good lmao) but I did think that aspect of it was interesting given the very sci-fi dystopia cyberpunk aspects and the fact that it is used for rescue missions by special trained agents.

    I re-did an old wood staircase while listening to your videos a month ago 😂
    (I've also played games, checked emails, done embroidery etc.)
    Post-watch: I think the plot holes would've been too much for me (although I'm not sure if I had noticed them while reading, depending on if I remembered the rules).
    The princess having her body stolen at 8(?) years old, or was "Calla" 8 and the princess was actually 13. The eye-color thing also stood out to me, especially if royal yellow is genetic.
    How Anton jumped without the light showing him doing so also stood out, I don't know if this will be explained later. Could just be that he jumps so much he has gotten really good at it/has always been that good.
    Based on the goodreads reviews for this book, I'm not sure I would enjoy it, but I'm honestly surprised by how many people were saying there was no chemistry between the characters.

    The twin cities being named San-Er… what, was her first idea Yi-Er? Like I’m almost certain she just named the city “Three-Two” in Chinese, without tones. I know she’s Chinese-New Zealander(?) but that’s a little… not great especially considering the butchering of Chinese influences in These Violent Delights. It seems a little difficult to seamlessly incorporate Chinese names into English-language fantasy, but I just think… use the characters, write the pinyin at the bottom if you must. If books can use random French or Spanish sentences… why can’t we have Chinese characters in our Chinese-inspired fantasies? But I must say, a city named 三二市looks pretty stupid.
    Edit: Yǐ-Èr (一二) is “one two”. Honestly, maybe I’m alone in this, but the capital city should have a 京 jīng in the title…

    This reminds me of Bran Stark from A Song Of Ice And Fire. He is a warg (I think that’s how you spell it) so he can shift into his wolf Summer’s mind. In the show Game of Thrones, he goes into a man, Hodor’s mind. Bran is seen as a hero because he does what he needs to do for the realm and sometimes that’s using Hodor’s body. In the book, BRAN IS A MONSTER. Skinchangers or wargs have something called the three abominations: you can’t eat human meat in the body, you can’t mate in the body, and you can’t take over another person’s body. Bran has broken the first and third abomination. The third is with Hodor. Hodor gets so scared whenever Bran does that to him that he curls himself up in his mind where Bran can’t get to him. Bran’s other companions don’t know how much he is doing this. It’s horrible to read about how Hodor responds to Bran taking his body. The series show how taking someone’s body can affect the other person. This book throws the horror of doing that to someone to the side. I don’t understand why this book makes it seem like it’s no big deal. Also, like people using people’s body to do…stuff without consent is a big thing in A Song Of Ice And Fire too with the second abomination. People think Bran is going to use Hodor’s body to do stuff with his crush Meera. Also talking about consent, Hodor actively doesn’t consent to what Bran is doing. He can’t even consent because of his mental state.
    Another thing is that if a warg dies their body can go into whatever animal they are connected with but every day they lose themselves to the animal more and more. I think this is a very interesting concept and something that could improve this book.

    I always felt this would be too messy a concept for a book, so I didn't read this one. I half-liked, half-hated These Violent Delights duology, but I haven't written off Chloe Gong. But I feel like this concept of nonconsensual body jumping would be better suited for a short animation or film or short story or action movie. I can def believe there is already a short oneshot manga or an animation student's project about this very same concept. I think one of the more conceptual and unique animation studios would pull off this concept. In a full book, I'd think too much about the details and possible societal effect and consistency.

    I haven't read the book, but it seems that August is one of those characters who is very well written, but a terrible person. Other examples: Mapleshade from Warrior Cats, Taravangian and Elhokar from the Stormlight Archive (highly recommend stormlight btw, you seem to like hard fantasy, where questions are answered, and branderson writes very hard fantasy, like stormlight 4 starts off with a pov character on the flying machine she designed using the magic system of the world, i think you'd like it), and... idk my interests are mostly just branderson, murder kitties, and Percy Jackson.

    Body Jumping (more like body swapping) is a thing in Stargate: Universe, and it weirded me out every time anything romantic/sexual happened, but the issue with it was only brought up by any of the characters a whopping once. Two people have spouses, and would immediately go to their spouse to have sex whenever they body swapped. Like, sir/ma'am, that isn't your body. These people didn't consent to this.
    Liked the rest of the show, though. Too bad it got cancelled.

    It doesn't really belong to this video, I just have to tell someone. A while ago I was really into dragon romantasy and I read a lot. I generally like even really harcore topics, so I am not that easy to gross out.
    But I stumbled upon this series on Kindle unlimited, called "dark Rhys chronicles" or something like this and I mean it, it was the worst book I ever read. It is the first book in my whole life I couldn't finish.
    The "love interest" bullies our main girl the whole book and even kills her in the end (she comes back due to magic), he has no redeeming qualities. And she is so puppy eyed and in love. I never will finish this series, it was so bad.
