  • The new SoundTraxx Blunami decoders have really generated a lot of interest among model railroaders of all types. After all, the freedom to operate model locomotives using DCC, DC, or battery power is enticing. Imagine not having to run wires or even clean your rails! In my last video I showed how to install a Blunami decoder in an HO locomotive. In this video I'll show how to use the new Blunami Bluetooth app with both an iPhone and iPad to operate and program the decoder.
As Impromised below are some UA-cam channels with useful info. Below these are websites where you can find more info and package deals for Blunami battery power installs.

Thanks! This confirms what I suspected after Friday's video... Blunami has just potentially disrupted DCC... which had disrupted DC. It will be interesting to see where this leads the mainstream in 5-10 years (separation of train control from layout control/LCC?).

It was also suggested that one could install a micro-switch between the track power feed and a battery feed so that you could choose which method of power you want to run with. I remember one show where a club displaying their DCC layout had major problems with their DCC system and could not run trains the first day of the show. Being able to switch to battery power (DeadRail) would allow one to run trains in that situation.

If you mean the battery option I think you would need to put that in a trailer car or dummy loco. For the most part I see this mainly for HO and larger scales until the miniaturization catches up.

    Thanks Larry.
I am really impressed with this product and the work Soundtrraxx and BlueRail have put into the development. It really shows how the technologies that have been available for some time (tried & true) can be applied to model railroads.
I believe this may simplify the ability of new modelers to enter the hobby without the complexity (and cost) that DCC systems bring to the table. Although Locos may be more expensive.
It would be interesting to visualize how this will evolve into the future. Maybe another topic for a video.........
There will be a great need to "standardize" this growth.
I would like to see that all decoders are Bluetooth and all apps (including the SoundTraxx/BlueRail app) can connect to any manufacturers Bluetooth decoder. We don't want to see this great advancement crush under conflicting and complicated strategies that will stifle our hobby.
My son has developed an impressive interest in the hobby and is building his second layout (had to move). But it is my support he requires to get him through the complexities of DCC systems, programming, wiring, etc. He is from a different generation of modelers that expect to use current technoligies that they are familiar with (i.e. smart phones).
Really enjoy your videos. I learn something new every week.
    Thanks

Such a shame it's not yet on Android. In the UK and a lot of Europe android devices are rather more numerous than Apple ones - but I guess they had to start from the US market where the opposite is true. Generally, this kind of tech approach has to be the future of the model rail hobby - the days of endless bundles of wires under the layout do seem to be numbered - although that older approach is probably easier to troubleshoot.

    • @TheDCCGuy
      @TheDCCGuy  2 роки тому

      And here is his answer:
Once you connect to a train, it is ‘locked’ and on one else can run it. There can be any number of users all using their own app to control their train/locos. The only way you’d see a delay is if multiple users are all controlling more than 37 locos and all send a command at the same time.. The 38+ commands may see a ¼-1/2 second delay.

Given my age it's unlikely that I will ever use this impressive Bluetooth approach to loco control. (And I only started using DCC just a couple of years ago.) However, I'm also a microcontroller electronics hobbyist, so it is not surprising to me that this has come to pass as Bluetooth transceivers are available in small single chip packages. I'm sure the programming effort to make this happen must have been considerable, and the company is clearly on the cutting edge. Having said all that, I have to admit I dislike touch screens in general and particularly dislike using sliders to control loco speed (espeically when switching). Even if I eventually try this, I'll wait for a throttle with a proper knob. :-)

I have a beginner question. I have flown rc airplanes for years so I am familiar with the concept of dead rail. Lost connection handling: In the event you lose connection with your locomotive, adjusting the time-out period will assure your train doesn’t continue to run after connection loss.
      Time-out Period (in seconds) = value x 0.25
      For example:
A value of 0 disables the time-out period entirely (the locomotive will continue to run on its last command until you reestablish connection and send a new command).
A value of 8 sets the time-out period to 2 seconds (8 x 0.25 = 2 seconds) so if you lose connection, the locomotive will stop running after 2 seconds.
A value of 255 is 63.75 seconds, or just over a minute.
