- I am joined by fellow UA-cam sensation Laurence M. Brown AKA @LostinthePond -NO WAIT that's his line! And fellow content creator Tarah Cantrell aka @OldFashionedAF who just so happens to be his sensational wife. We'll be discussing some of the differences between being a tourist and an Irish person visiting America and comparing that with what it's like as a British immigrant citizen of the United States. Let's compare our impressions, food preferences and overall culture shocks!

It’s always nice to see people I follow work together on videos. I’ve watch you both for many years. ❤
Awesome! Thank you!
She'll have a lahge hazelnut. Reglah
It's fun they're both nuts 😅😅
I follow them both, this was fun to watch. Or should I say it was a craic video?
As opposed to me, who has just discovered Diane through Laurence on Lost in the Pond -- looking forward to watching more of Diane's videos.
Woohoo! A beautiful collab - Great job Diane, Laurence, and company!! 🥳
Yay! Thank you!
Diane's dog Chewie needs to meet Lawrences' dog Arthur! :) I love UA-cam Collabs!
Dry sarcasm is some of my favorite. It makes you pay attention in a conversation and be more in the moment.
Well this was definitely worth getting up for in the future, I'M LIKE 6:00 Am in Tokyo so I don't miss premier of Laurence from Lost in the Pond and his wife Tarah. Diane brings out a hidden well of humour and personality that Laurence doesn't usually display. Tarah just makes everything work. Editor Diane pops in to put everyone in their place, because it's just a necessary fact of life that every one needs an Editor Diane. Didn't really know what expect, but I really enjoyed what you guys gave me/us. Yeah, nuff said.
Well thank you a thousand times over 😊
Have followed Lawrence for years!! Just love his channel.
Love Diane's safe-in-America use of "Oh my gosh."
Oh dear, the music video was from the 80s. Not the 60s or 70s. LOL A Gen Xer, here. 🤣 Love this video, so fun!
Great video! Two of my favorite foreigners in the US. 💯👍🏼
This was a great interview. @Laurence ...I'm from Boston and it's the place you and your wife should live. We have Bangers and mash, we have fresh Fish and chips and we have the curvey streets that are fun to walking down. We even have beautiful homes that are still standing that were built over 300 years ago. @ Diane...please come visit us too. There's a very large Irish community here and we'd love to have you.
This is probably my fave collab of all time. I've always dreamt of this, but never imagined it'd actually happen. Thank you both for this.
As a subway worker I actually get about 30 or 40 dollars a day in tips and it surprises me that people tip at subway but I'm not going to complain one way or the other.
Oh wow! That’s cool
I think COVID-19 changed the tipping culture in that it made me more charitable toward all service workers, being that they couldn’t form cohorts due to the public interaction, I started tipping counter pickup because I was grateful it was there.
While I do Love your Premiers, Irish Girl, the third time watching through was the Charm! Just an all around brilliant production, thank you Diane O'Drama, Laurence & Tarah, Editor Diane, and Chewie
So glad you enjoyed it ❤
Love you both! Love the dry sarcasm! Thank you for the collaboration❤
I came to your channel from Lawrence's version of this interview, so, good cross-promotion there. In another video you mentioned that you hadn't spent much time in "the flyover states," and while your trip to Chicago is good, what I really recommend is a cross-country road trip. A London-based UA-camr I follow did this recently and picked up some good insights. You say here that you don't drive, but I imagine that you probably have friends that do. Heck, I just watched your Irish pubs video too, so you could do "pubs across America." (I have one to recommend in Las Vegas.)
There's nothing more American than a road trip!
Thanks Diane For Having a Premiere Today. I enjoyed seeing Your perspective of what's its like to move to America. Having Laurence perspective helps too since He's lived here for awhile. Thanks making Friday and the Weekend Enjoyable. Give Chewie some Treats and Cuddles.
@@DianeJennings 🥳The Diane and Chewie Emojiverse is the best.
I love how their brands of awkwardness blend so well in the beginning.
Aww 😂
Like I said over on Lost In The Pond, I'm so stoked that you two collaborated. 😊
I did a job in Ireland for a short time. I had to "integrate" myself into Irish ways. It was NOT hard at all. The Irish, as far as I'm concerned, are very much like Americans. Even their accent is not much different. While living overseas, I also worked with a number of British people. GREAT....and FUNNY (Like Laurence!). "Stand up comedy" MUST be a part of their public education? And regarding these presenters: I REALLY enjoy the channels run by both these people! BOTH are VERY entertaining.
Closing with "Do It Now" is perfect lololol
You & Laurence work well together. Hope you both had as much fun making the videos as I did watching them!
Great video. I enjoyed seeing the difference between your video and Lawrence's. The same two people conversing, but from different perspectives.
Wow, three of my favorite youtubers all on one video! (editor Diane is absolutely one of the three- and probably my favorite of the three)
Editor Diane killed it this video. So good! 🤠
Welcome to the USA!
I almost always tip. For example, I picked up an order of groceries I selected online. When they brought the order out to my car I tipped the person who carried it to my car. I always do.
In a lot of cases tips aren't usually given I still give one. I assign it to, "Always do the right thing."
As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
Good on you! It makes it difficult to budget though as a newb to it
@@DianeJennings I understand and that makes perfect sense. BTW, I am subscriber and I just love your posts.
Again, y'all be safe.
My wife is semi-retired. She got a job at a supermarket because she likes to shop for some reason. It keeps her busy and she makes "play $$" to go to yardsales and spoil the grandkids.
Some days she shops for people's orders to be picked up other days she's the one running the orders out to the cars. When she does the running people tip her sometimes and she splits her tips with the people that did the shopping because she has a big heart and feels that tip should go to the "team". The messed up part is her co-workers don't turn around and do that. She doesn't care. She's still doing it.
I knew I picked the right girl almost 40 yrs ago!😊
Laurence sent me here. Well, not personally, but either way I have subscribed! I enjoyed this video and your channel is very entertaining!
Great video. Nice to see you getting out into the country some and not just a bit of the tourists bits.
You may like some of the smaller places.
Mike from Ohio.
It used to be a thing, decades ago, in the US, that if the service was awful, you left a single penny, face down on the table. It was a signal that "Yes, I normally tip. But your service was so egregious that I am leaving this to make a point about how bad it was." It is something that it is a shame has fallen out of favor. I say that as someone who has been reliant on tips before.
😮😮😮
Very much enjoyed this crossover. Thank you to you both for taking the time to meet up.
17:43 First time I’ve ever seen Lawrence break character to laugh. Good job Diane!
I actually love the sarcasm from all over. But yes I sometimes have to pause, but just a little.
Thanks all 3 of you for the good video 👍🏻
Long time viewer of Diane and Lawrence! So excited ❤
Wonderful collaboration ❤
I'm not particularly well travelled but during my few forays outside the UK I throw myself into other cultures so much so that I have been invited into the homes of local people to try real home cooked meals. I find out about local customs and culture before visiting a place but I do not try to speak the language. The reason being that my pronunciation is usually so bad that people think I'm being insulting.
I laughed at the sarcasm bit...I can be pretty sarcastic sometimes...My daughter is 6 she has Aspergers Syndrome she has trouble with identifying sarcasm as well as jokes...The other day was with my brother and he dropped her off she came in the kitchen and said "Dad guess what?" and I said "What?" she said "Hell is freezing over my uncle said to my aunt." I had to explain to her that he was being sarcastic lol
When we were living in the US, my Scottish wife was asked what language she was speaking because it wasn't English. I'm surprised she didn't punch that guy (she a Weegie). Also, we can relate to the headache that is the USCIS website. Great video.
I'm a California resident and I, along with many others around here, use the word "crack" as a way to describe something being great, i.e., the thing in question is so great that the greatness is equivalent to be addicted to crack. So, basically, calling something "crack" is just a way of saying something is so good it could be addictive.
Might want to use the Irish spelling.
@@mikeg2306 how do the Irish spell it? I'd guess "krack" or maybe "krak," or perhaps "chrack," (okay maybe not that last one.) But really, I don't know which spelling is the Irish spelling.
It was so fun to see you guys work together !
There are places tipping is considered nearly required like table service. But everywhere else its mostly if you are receiving personalized service. If someone is doing something for you personally that it is up to them to do a better job, then tipping likely. So a haircut, you are tipping for the personal service of them doing their best. Generally think of tipping as a direct thank you for someone going above and beyond what they could do. Over the years it has become formalized and wages adjusted but really its just a way to thank someone for giving you good personal service. Tips will never be rejected and really only required in a few places, eg table service.
On the other side was said when people were going to commercial they'll see you on the other side of the commercials
I'd love to see a video for Americans who want to visit Ireland: basic advice, best places to go, etc.

For work I lived in Japan and Singapore for a number of years. Before going, I went to a class on cultural integration aimed at lowering the level of "culture shock". "Culture shock" is REAL and people SHOULD be "trained" in lessening the effects before they move. Bottom line: Initially, people are excited to move to a different country. BUT....very soon they realize they don't know the "ups and downs" of living there...once the MOVE has taken place. Some people have a VERY difficult time dealing with the change. Some enter an extended period of depression. However, the good news: After that initial downturn, they begin to accept the differences and start a period of "integration" into their new living environment. So much so, that when it comes time to return to their country of origin....THEY DON'T WANT TO GO BACK!
Food is definitely regional in nature here, there's ice cream I can't find here but if I go south to Texas or Florida it's everywhere. Someone was visiting me from Florida and we had foods up here she'd never seen before.
🍨
Coffee ice cream in the east coast not so popular in the midwest
We Americans also get confused about tipping. I do tip in some fast food places, but not all, and it would be hard to explain the difference between where I do and don't, just a general vibe of service level? I don't usually tip at the really big chains. If I have to think about it, like, should I? I usually do just in case.
Re: the tanning. If the first attempt had been unsatisfactory, leave no tip. If you are satisfied on later visits, tip 15%. I doubt that you'll be a chronic patron so no expectation for a higher percentage unless they truly go above and beyond the duty.
I love Laurence. Guy always looks like he's the star of a hostage video, even on his own channel.
Thanks for sharing how it is Diane!
Thanks for watching!
Good rule of thumb: If you order standing up, no tipping required unless the server put in extra effort or gave you something extra.
18:19 You two craic me up!
I really can't wait to use /s in posts. It's so convenient and helpful. 🙂
It actually is isn’t it!
I hope you are enjoying Chicago
Oh, I am so happy to hear that you are moving to the US Diane. I am sure Chewy will love it.
I’m not 😂😂 but thank you. Maybe some day!
I live in WV and the older folks say cracking good time.
Very slightly different usage from what they were talking about, but closely related. It's also a usage common in the UK: ua-cam.com/video/LLDXNPGUwSo/v-deo.html
I must have really been sleep deprived during the premiere. Holy Batman clip ED!
Rule to live by when it comes to tipping. If they do not bring your food to you... DO NOT tip them. 10-15% max if they do bring your food to you. People have gotten greedy and shameless when it comes to tipping/asking for tips.
True most of America is safe
Yup. And Chicago gets a bad rap but most of the problems are in one section and it's a section tourists won't be going to.
Ya don't tip if you take your food from the counter to your table
That’s definitely not true in California… every screen has a tip option at the counter. I do draw the line at tipping on the purchase of a gift card…
@@manmasherSo? No one with a brain tips thus. That's why they put a tip jar because it is NOT the norm and they hope to sucker the uneducated
Happy Friday!! I really love this video. Have a great weekend.
Thank you! You too!
My two favorite channels doing a collab. Of course Diane is my favorite. Laurence doesn't have ED😃!
He had her on his video... ED just takes over....🤣🤣🤣

Love you guys!

Has anybody else noticed that Diane looks very much like the prim and proper young lady and also very wholesome today very refreshing to see now a days.
Hi ED! I’ve been subscribed to LITP for ages!
if people who are supposed to provide a service do it poorly you can tip less or not at all...tipping is only "mandatory" when people do their jobs reasonably well.
I believe a lot of Irish people live in Massachusetts, California, and New York
And RI and Chicago
I ALMOST NEVER LEAVE A TIP.ONLY FOR BIG MEALS,THAT THE BUS BOY CLEANS UP.NEVER,AT QUICK FOOD PLACES.
The easiest way to explain ''craic'' to an American is to point out the remaining phrases in American English where it is still used. "crack a joke" or "what's crackin'?" .....though it's also the origin of the term "cracker" (white people not the food)
I once had an ambulance ride that they billed at $2700. It was 1/4 mile, and they did no work at all beyond providing a (I'm guessing, given the inflated prices of medical equipment) a $10 heplock IV pigtail. Now, I'm not faulting the EMTs and crew of the company; they make very little on an hourly basis, and this crew was great to me. But they didn't even burn enough gas to trip the odometer, and beyond the half-hour of paperwork they had to fill out at the ER, it wasn't even very much time out of their work day. My insurance paid the company $1200, which was VASTLY more than reasonable... yet still, the ambulance company went after me for the rest. Well, not really - they charged it off as a "loss" on their accounting, and sold the supposed "debt" to a bill collecting company for pennies on the dollar.
On the advice of my lawyer, I ignored it. By law, "medical expenses" cannot be held against you, especially if you don't engage the "bill collectors" at all. Eventually, it just "went away" - i.e. they considered it a "dead account", and moved on to more profitable things. But you have to hold firm on the medical stuff - most insurance will pay more than reasonable rates; don't fall for the inflated billing some "providers" engage in. What they get is almost always more than fair, the annoyance is making them stick to it - and yes, we shouldn't *have* to deal with this ourselves. So my advice is... don't. Just don't waste your effort on the issue - ignore them. They can't touch you, legally, so just don't bother with them.
Tipping has always been a representation of service quality along with the generosity of the individual. Sadly it has become "expected." whether or not it was earned. For me, If someone did a good job and i was satisfied with services rendered, then a little something is warranted.
ED had my curiosity with the thumbnail…but following the trailer, now has my attention
Wheeeee 🎉
When I moved from SE England to Ireland some 25+ years ago I thought great an English speaking country that actually speaks English, took a year or two to understand the Cork accent. Didn't help working for an Italian takeaway/restaurant with 80% of the staff Italian and I had to translate for customers and staff.
Cork is hard. A colleague married someone from Cork. And she always tells me that she wishes I had been here over the weeknornthe break or whatever. Because his parents came by and she needed a translator 😅😅
If the worker gets a full wage I seldom tip. I always tip my barber 10%. However if the person is a waiter at a sit down restaurant, I tip 30%.
Tipping is terrible. It bothers me that I can go to two different restaurants, order the same thing but the prices are drastically different so one waiter gets a much bigger tip than the other for doing the exact same job.
Woah!
I always tip more at breakfast. Those people do more running back-and-forth with coffee refills, etc than people who serve lunch. But because breakfast is often cheaper, they get a lower tip, doesn't seem fair.@dongleason9878
Diane and her friend went to COMPTON!.... so, be safe. LOL.
We say things like, "You crack me up." Which means you are really funny and you made me laugh out loud uncontrollably.
I get y'all's sarcasm, even if sometimes I have to look a word up.
When I was a kid we had trains from the suburbs into the city. You got there about the same time as driving. If you we going somewhere near the train station. Now where is that sarcasm font? 🙂
But it's easier to move around to different parts of the city when you don't have to worry about parking the car or finding a spot multiple times
We're not looking so great in USA currently. Its a chaotic time.
Let’s Go Brandon!
@@Brian-vn4xb Good on ya!
I was watching LOST IN THE CREEK but this is better.
The sarcastic statements either of you make would never affect this American. I dare you both. I enjoy both of your youtube channels.
Wow, Diane you look amazing. You're often critical on your other videos of your own hair, makeup, lighting...whatever. The rest of us don't see it. Anyway, you certainly shouldn't have any worries about this shoot.😍
"I'll take the medium spray-tan, and my friend Laurence would just like a clear-coat."
14:08 That's how everyone feels visiting San Francisco
🤣You two work well together.
Been so long since I’ve watched! The pandemic hit and I wasn’t listening/watching to UA-cam as much because I wasn’t in office 40hrs/wk. For some reason just now, I was like, I haven’t watched (had to think of your name then remembered it’s what my mom almost named me)! And here I am!
Anyway, my first job was at Arby’s! America’s Roast Beef, Yes Sir! (That’s the acronym I learned.)
I changed my comment. As an American veteran, I would be willing to talk about the veteran experience and show you a Va hospital or base. A different view of America perhaps.
I grew up in The America and I'm not sure when to tip. Personally I don't tip unless they bring something out to me and I don't tip owners or family members of owners of service places. If im unsure, I'll err on the side of tipping.
Wait on yourself - no tip. No double tip, no tip at tanning salon. If unhappy with service best to tip just a little over a single dollar, shows staff you would have tipped if service was good, better than no tip.
7:30 Heck, I live in Ohio and I wish we could get Arby's here. Or at least have them be unlocked during posted business hours so you can actually eat one. Was turned away again 8 hours ago. At least this time they posted a note on the door so I didnt rip my fingertips off on the door handle.
That video was from the 80's by the way...
Check out the Appalachians were the Scotch/Irish for the most part.
Diane, if you move to Chicago, we’re gonna swim in that lake one day!!😍
Sounds cold 🥶
@@DianeJennings keeps you young!😃
@@DianeJenningsgo in August
If they bring you food or a drink, you tip. If you go get the food or drink yourself (counter or buffet), no tip.
A lot of "Counter Service" places will have a Tip Jar sitting on the counter. So, if you think that the server is wonderful, or efficient, or good looking, and you want to tip, you can. (Just make sure that they see you putting money in the jar for the personal credit.) Or not.
9:47 and 10:55
"Being an American is adding something, it isn't taking away." "I'll always be Irish, 'cause that's how I began... and when I'm an American, I'll be a good one, too! I'll be truly as American as Irish Stew!"
That's from a Disney film that is largely forgotten, I think- which I find a shame, it should be more well known- called "The Happiest Millionaire" made in 1967. It's told from the perspective of a young Irish immigrant who comes to work as a butler in the home of a wealthy but eccentric American family. He plans on getting his American citizenship, but is also proud of his Irish roots, and there is this whole song (the film is a musical) about how being an American means adding to the culture, while retaining your own. You don't have to give up being Irish (or by extension whichever culture you come from) to also be American. It's a really fun song, with a great message.
Thanks
Welcome😊
OH! Tipping, as in tipping waiters! I thought ya'll were talking about Cow Tipping! XD Silly me!
