Hi Jeff!!! you can tell the band had a great return to form to what the fans wanted from them and just imagine what they can do if Brian Jones was clean..... To me "Street....." is an awesome songs, never get tired listening to it. cheers and be well
Beggar's Banquest has been my favorite Stones album for a long time. Back in 1970, I heard Stray Cat Blues for the first time on an L A underground FM radio station. At that time, I knew all the Stones singles, but hearing that song blew my 13-year-old self away. I thought that I needed to start getting some Stones albums to hear what other songs I'm missing out on. I just got done reading the newest book about the Velvet Underground, and it mentions that Stray Cat Blues was influenced by VU's Heroin -- they even have similar intros. I do love Jig Saw Puzzle, one of my favorites on the album. Loved seeing all the Rock N Roll Circus footage again.
Wow, I never thought about the influence of the Velvet Underground on Stray Cat but that totally makes sense. Great song that should have been a single. 👍
In 1969 , my Grade 11 English teacher , Miss Minter , allowed each student to select a song , present the lyrics to the class for discussion , and then play the song for the class at the end . I chose Sympathy for the Devil . She screened all of the songs first , of course . Once she read the lyrics for Sympathy for the Devil ( here's the point at which I expected her to say : Choose another song ) , she said : Well , you've certainly got a lot to discuss here . Go ahead . Anyway , every time I hear Sympathy for the Devil , it takes me back to that Grade 11 class , and the fabulous Ms. Minter . This is a top 5 Stones album for me . Typically , you did an excellent job of covering this album .. Cheers , to Miss Minter !
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 Yes , she was the coolest . Not many teachers at that time would have allowed me to choose that song. She had a lot of input during my presentation , so she wound up doing half of the work for me .
This album is much improved from their last one. I love Sympathy and Jigsaw Puzzle. I agree, this is a back to basics album which made it a success. Great coverage like usual Jeff. You haven’t let us down yet 👏🏼 Thank you.
Great series, Jeff. I especially appreciated learning that Brian is still present on BEGGAR'S BANQUET, although his contributions are less obvious. Nice to see you re-purpose the "Child of the Moon" footage so effectively for "Stray Cat Blues". One (very minor) point of clarification, Keith's first solo singing is actually on "Something Happened to Me Yesterday". Looking forward to exploring the Stones catalogue with you as my guide. Cheer!
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 Hey man, no problem. The only reason I remembered was that Keith had corrected a journalist back in the day who had asked why he waited until "You Got the Silver" to take a vocal lead. Richards was quite adamant when he mentioned his BUTTONS vocals. I guess when the Stones were hitting their classic '70s run, a lot of people forgot about the earlier material.
Definitely some absolute classics on this one, i love a few of these, of course some weak ones thrown in, Factory Girl is a lowlight for me,overall a great album, phenomenal video once again Jeff! 👏👏👍🤘🤘
There are times when this has been my favorite Stones album. This and Let It Bleed are so great. Jig Saw Puzzle isn’t the greatest, but I don’t hate it. I’ve never seen the footage you showed for Stray Cat Blues. Parachute Woman is one of my favorite Stones songs. I should have told you ahead of time what I envision when I hear it and you could have incorporated it into here. I know that sounds presumptuous. I don’t like getting into the whole Stones vs Beatles thing but personally for me, this is where I like the Stones albums better. Fantastic job here yet again!!
Thanks! These four albums from Beggars to Exile are as good as anything the Beatles put out. I would love to hear your interpretation of Parachute Woman sometime.
What can be said about this one, it’s just a stone cold classic. I feel like Jimmy created the ideal rock and roll sound with “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and kept it going with Beggars Banquet. I don’t think there was anyone doing stereo mixes like him. I do diverge with you regarding “Jigsaw Puzzle.” For me that one is a masterpiece, with each verse being fantastic observations from Jagger’s point of view. “Parachute Woman” sounds great, but the lyrics are more jokey and not in the same level as the rest, so I’d pick that one as the weakest. Anyway, great video as always!
Hi Jeff! Beggars Banquet......is a gas, gas gas. Up to this point the only truly great Stones album was Aftermath. Beggars Banquet was the Stones first CLASSIC album. A gem from start-to-finish that serves as an amuse-bouche for the magic that would come with Bleed, Sticky and of course, Exile. In fact, Beggars is the platform that all those albums come from. While Beggars might not be as consistent or as mesmerizing as those three albums....(four, if you want to include the live Get Yer Yayas Out)...it still can make the hair on your arm stand on end. Sympathy might be the best album opener the band ever released (yes, I prefer it over Gimme Shelter and Start Me Up).....No Expectations is, unfortunately, Brian's last great effort with the group. Dear Doctor and Parachute Woman, while not essential, clearly fit the theme and feel of Beggars. Jigsaw Puzzle (very Dylan-esque and self-referential) is a buried treasure. Street Fighting Man is textbook Stones....meant as a compliment. Prodigal Son is moody and catchy. While I like the slower version of Stray Cat Blues on Yayas.....the down-and-dirty studio version on Beggars is stellar. Factory Girl is on my top ten fave deep cuts and Salt of the Earth (almost a pre-cursor of Bleed's closer) packs a punch. To sum up.....Beggars in one of those albums that only get better with age. Great video once again!
My favorite Stones album. As much as I liked everything before this one knocked me out. During a year that gave us the first albums by The Band and CCR the Stones outdid both of those return to the roots records. I don't have any disliked songs. Factory Girl is a highlight in my book! In ny opinion from this point on The Stones topped The Beatles with their albums. Beatles songs were still excellent but for me the albums (even Abbey Road) aren't as consistantly excellent as Stones albums. One band was reaching it's best days and the other coming apart.
I might've listened to Satanic Majesties all the way through once or twice in my lifetime, but Beggars Banquet I have on all the time. The others here are right, it's much improved. It's great how the two strongest tracks open up each side, Sympathy for the Devil and Street Fighting Man. I do love Jigsaw Puzzle - it is one of my favorites, along with Dear Doctor. The overdone twang on Jigsaw Puzzle makes me wish the track was longer. i just wanted to keep hearing it whine, it's great. Overall, a great video, I will smash that like button. Let's drink to the hard working Jeff Whitcher.
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 Thank God we have that incredible London singles collection. All the best in one collection. The Beatles never had any fillers, I don't think...although on occasion there's an occasional track of theirs I can do without hearing at the moment.
No Expectations is THE best track on the album IMO. It’s so fitting as the last great thing Brian did, the irony of the lyrics. It’s in a way, the 5 of them performing their swan song to Brian.
The outro of “Salt of the Earth” is one of my favourite Stones recordings. Charlie Watts kicks up the beat and he and Nicky Hopkins jam in double time to the fade.
Alright, bro, I don't care what anyone says. This is a great album, and a great fucking review of it. Brian Jones was a real motherfucker, too bad he went out so soon. I want to put it here now. That sympathy for the devil is the greatest rock and roll song ever.
The Stones back to basics. This issuch a cool album. Love it!

Great album and great review Jeff. My only complaint with this lp is that both side closers go on for too long. Minor complaint, I guess.
