Hi Jeff! Those heliconias are going to be so pretty! I always enjoy how much detail you give so that others can be successful, too. You must be having so much fun getting everything set up with the new heater, the pond and lights. I'm happy for you! Thank you so much for sharing!
Awesome can’t wait to watch later, I was just thinking about starting some tropicals! This winter weather has me dreaming of the summer. Thanks, Jeff! Have a good one. 😄
Hey Jeff See your plants are enjoying the warm garage. This crazy weather hit 50 here snow melting gutters defrosting. Ice storm on the way supposed to get 9 to 12 in of snow. Can't believe all green weeds looks like there baby petunias growing under the snow. Getting my seeds ready to plant.
What a fun winter project 🙌🏼 that heater has opened up so many doors and opportunities 🙌🏼 getting a head start on anything throughout these months makes anticipating spring even better 👍🏼
I’m going to try growing Stuttgart cannas again this year. I’ve ordered the rhizome, hopefully that’s what I’ll receive. Anyway I’m going to try starting them inside so this video came in very handy!☃️❄️🙃💚
Love your video! I live in NC and I love the tropicals. I had some heliconias in some giant planters that had full sun (south facing deck) they grew like crazy! I have no clue if they’ll come back this year but I’m definitely buying more soon!
Got a big pot of Heliconia stricta ‘Dwarf Jamaican’ suffering from ditch water irrigation. Their leaves look terrible and the soil is just mud. Watching this before I take the rhizomes to repot and grow anew. I appreciate this video because I can see how they’re harvested and packed when shipped. The suggestion of peroxide to remove pathogens seemed weak to me, but everyone seems to have success with that. Wanted to use a bleach solution or 122F soak, but peroxide does the job, that’s much easier!
I have had good luck with growing roots in straight fresh sphagnum moss...It has some natural qualities. (I read it was used for wound dressings in the past) I have started a lemon tree from seeds (out of my fish and chip dinner out lemon wedge) (Just for fun I started to see if they would grow got 3 trees out of 5 seeds...). 18" tall now...still in clear plastic cashew container recycled. still in moss...I keep moss damp..once every week or so....flush with fertilized water....dump all out extra water..check often.... lots of roots. Also started a rare seed I found in a mandarin orange, usually seedless...that is about 6" tall....it started this way and it's in the same container with the lemons...I thought maybe since the lemons must have some rooting hormones the mandarins seed might like...it worked.
I picked up several heliconia fro Home Depot during the summer. I was so impressed with how they bloomed continually. Mine were in pots but I was thinking about planting in the ground come spring. Do you dig yours up every fall? I live in zone 9a.
Hey! I just keep the soil evenly moist and don't let it dry out, least not for very long. On a moisture meter I think a level 3 or 4? ... it's been a long time since I measured with a moisture meter.
Oh I forgot to mention what they were! I had it in my head like five times to say the name. Oops! Those are just fungus gnat traps. They are all over Amazon if you just search for "fungus gnat trap"
I wander if you can give some advice. I have several Majesty Palms that are not doing well. We are dropping into the 30s here every night, last night it was the upper 20's I have them in pots under my covered patio so they still get a lot of light but are under cover and protected from the frost. I wander if it would be better to move them in. My grow space gets to the upper 50s each night and 70s during the day. What do you think?
Oh they would absolutely benefit from being moved inside if you are consistently having temps below 50F where they are right now. Majesty palms really like things more on the warm side. 😊
@@TropicalPlantParty Thanks for the info. One of them is far to big for me to move inside but I will start moving the rest in. They are calling for the 70's here next week. Looks like my gardening is starting early this year WOOHOO!!!!
You absolutely can do that, but with cannas it's much easier to just start them in the ground. They take off so fast I'm the ground that withing a couple of weeks they are normally as big as they would be if you started then indoors several weeks prior.
I’d love to add some heliconias to my garden but… Are there any heliconias that you could cut back in the fall and store dormant over winter? Would they last that long? Zone 6B here.
Hey Justin! Unfortunately most heliconia don't have a dormancy so they really dont store well. Usually the rhizome is ok being dig and stored for a few weeks, but that's about it. The heliconia hirsuta is the only one I've had reliable success with when I've kept it "dormant." With those, I bring them inside, let them die down as I've reduced watering and those bounce back from the soil in spring.
This was literally the only video that actually helped me understand what to do for when I got my rhizomes a few days ago. Thank you.
Can’t wait to see the plants when they grow on.
Thank you Jeff!☃️❄️🙃💚
Always a pleasure 😊

Soooo looking forward to summer! Only a few more weeks until spring!

Can't wait to see those flowers!

Crazy weather! We got about 10 inches and I've never been happier! 😆 was 64F Tuesday morning and then 28F and snowing Wednesday morning.
Heading to Logee's in CT tomorrow. Hoping to pick up a "Red Christmas" Heliconia while I'm there. Among other things. Hoya, maybe.
Have fun! Red Christmas is a beauty!
Congratulations on your new heliconias, I can wait to see what they look like! ☃️❄️🙃💚
Going to be so much to have all the tropical color outside!
What a fun winter project 🙌🏼 that heater has opened up so many doors and opportunities 🙌🏼 getting a head start on anything throughout these months makes anticipating spring even better 👍🏼
So many opportunities! Love being able to work with the plants during winter.

Such beautiful cannas! I've ordered more, hopefully they send me the right ones.

Awesome! So many fun ways to propagate and grow so many things around us! 😊
I wish I had this video last year 😪 maybe I will try your method ne t year
Hey Jeff I'm curious, from when you root your heliconias, how long before you see growth?
I picked up several heliconia fro Home Depot during the summer. I was so impressed with how they bloomed continually. Mine were in pots but I was thinking about planting in the ground come spring. Do you dig yours up every fall? I live in zone 9a.
Great add to your collection of tropical plants. Do you think these will bloom this summer or need to mature more to bloom the following year?
Thank you! All of the ones I started should start to bloom this summer. The psittacorum type heliconias tend to be prolific bloomers. 😊
Hey Jeff, what soil moisture level do you recommend for growing rhizomes? I have H. danielsiana. Greetings from Germany !
Hey! I just keep the soil evenly moist and don't let it dry out, least not for very long. On a moisture meter I think a level 3 or 4? ... it's been a long time since I measured with a moisture meter.
Jeff, what are those yellow spikes? Are they moisture meters, gnat alarms? Lol did I miss something? And can I have a link please? Thanks!

@@TropicalPlantParty perfect thanks Jeff! 🥰
I’m trying to add to my heliconia collection anyway you can share details of a link to the site you got these from. Those really look nice
Hey there! They are from YeyBroms on etsy. 😊
@@TropicalPlantParty thanks I’ll take a look

Should I start my cannas on a heat mat?☃️❄️🙃💚
You absolutely can do that, but with cannas it's much easier to just start them in the ground. They take off so fast I'm the ground that withing a couple of weeks they are normally as big as they would be if you started then indoors several weeks prior.

Fate spedizioni di rizomi in Italia?
Maybe I missed it but how much water do you give them initially?
I just water them in until the soil is moistened all the way through, just like with a regular houseplant.
Only 5 more Heliconia? No rostrata or bihai?
Ha! Well I already have a rostrata, and have several other types wintering over.
Is this a indoor plant??
