After watching "D&B", I googled around to see how critics received the episode and they all were focused on the "Black Mirror" elements and the racist society undercurrent went completely over their heads....which was very frustrating for me as a queer Black man. Ncuti absolutely delivered but I was so bummed out that we see the "first" Black Doctor deal with his skin color being a hindrance to helping people in a regeneration and so many people just missed it completely. I can talk all day about how racism is not just the overt things but is insidious in how it infects a society (and gosh, I wish I was a podcaster so I could come talk with you guys on this episode) and I have to give RTD a little credit for pulling this off, although I was highly annoyed with him last week for saying that UK people looking down on country people from Wales was "racist" when its clearly more classist BUT ANYWAY, lol. I knew my favorite Doctor Who podcast would be media literate enough to see this episode in its totality, whether on the first or subsequent viewings. Love you cranky ol fellas from up North. HAPPY MAGNA CARTER DAY!
As a black viewer, I didn't see a problem with the way the Doctor approached the Finetime citizens. I felt like it was fitting of the Doctor to see a future where they could see reason if they just lived long enough to see it. He could see the bigger picture of the situation where the racists were too small-minded to see it. It would seem out-of-character for him to suddenly go "good riddance."
I totally understand the doctor saying think what you like I still want to save you, the need to save all life. Any humanitarian/doctor/firefighter of colour treating/saving a racist from imminent mortal danger would understand this.
I also got "Uglies" - "Pretties" - "Specials" vibes. The Finetime "kids" are in their "Pretties" phase. Fun episode. Enjoyed it. But in the big picture of this season, reveals nothing about Ruby Sunday beyond recognizing the weekly Susan Twist appearance.
