    Day of the eruption
KGW crews fly by helicopter up the Toutle river valley. They document the near-total destruction of the area along the river, watching as entire houses are swept into the raging torrent unleashed by the sudden melting of glaciers and the snowpack.
At the end of the video are some of the first close-up views of the roiling clouds of ash and stream filing the sky as the eruption of Mount St. Helens was in full force.
This is newly restored video from the KGW archives converted to full HD.
It is presented in it's original 4x3 registration.

The power & devastation of this eruption still amazes me 40 years later.

I was 11 years old when that mountain exploded... here is the the kicker...My family and i were suppose to go fishing that day on the north fork ....thank God my dad wanted to stay home and put a new roof on the house that day.... i remember my mom coming out and yelling at my dad and I saying the mountain exploded ...we were on the roof that morning and we didnt believe her until we turned around and saw nothing but black ash going to the east ...we could not even see the mountain .... and we lived in Vancouver

Easy for me to see how the Grand Canyon was possibly formed. That's a lot of moving dirt and carving of a massive canyon in a very short amount of time
