- Just south Whitchurch in rural Shropshire is an area known as Prees Heath Common. Throughout its long history the common has seen many changes. In 1915 it was used as a training base for the British Army in trench warfare training . As WW2 broke out the common became an internment camp for screening Austrian and German refugees and in 1942 an airfield was built on the site and named RAF Tilstock. Today part of the airfield is used for parachute jumping and the common is a Butterfly Nature Reserve.
Few people know that after 1946, when Tilstock airfield become redundant, the abandoned buildings on the various sites dotted around the southern side of the airfield, some up to a mile away from the main runway close to Prees Higher Heath, became home to Polish Army families. The sites that were used for housing Polish families consisted mostly of corrugated metal nissen huts with communal ablution blocks and a number of concrete huts.
Nice one B.E. Every time I drive my coach past here I want to just pull over and have a good mooch.
Come to Norfolk! We’ve got plenty of disused airfields and RAF bases. One just down the road from me, really interesting to explore.
Cool place need to visit that place.
The car was a sunbeam - helped a friend put it in there a least 30 years ago 👍
For what reason?

Was moved from one storage location to another (for a friend a friend) - obviously it’s final resting place - typical story was going to be restored one day - guess that day never came looking at it now.
@@simonm1967., who owns it now
@@simonpearce5039 - been there that long guessing whoever wants it can take it.....
@@simonm1967., who owns the nissen hut it is in tho, I could use some parts of it but I'm prepared to take it all away, thanks for replying back to me.
Lots of activity there now with electric lights in some of the old buildings. External spot lights, lots of cars and trucks. Is it being refurbished for tourism?
This reminds me of a place on the outskirts of Warboys in huntingdon wich are nissen huts from ww2
