I love mine. I had them put in my strat after a rookie move while changing the pup covers. I accidentally broke the coil on a couple of them while pulling the covers off with a screwdriver. Haha I was in my teens and didn't know any better. It was actually a happy accident. I saw a used set of Tex Specials at my music store. As soon as I was told they were the SRV pups, I was sold. So much room to play with. I also have my pup height a little lower in order to tame them a bit, but not too much. Thanks for the demo. Sounds great!
Thanks so much for your review Jack! Definitely the best pick ups I ever played on... these are giving back lots of emotions and a distinctive voicing to my Strat! Versatile, biting and delicate when necessary. Thanks for this video!
Great Review! Thanks for taking time to post this: I bought a 2000 American Strat (private sale) around a year ago, it came loaded with Fender Lace Sensor pickups (At the time I was quite excited about this as these were the pickups on the Clapton Strat) however I've never really got on with them (I own a mid 80's MIJ Strat loaded with EMG active noise reducing pickup's and this sounds much better to my ears). I looked at a number of pickups, I was considering buying a set of the Jimmie Vaughan Tex Mex (they get very good reviews). However (and this might come across as slightly snobby) I couldn't help feeling there was something fundamentally backwards about putting a set of Mexican made pickups on a USA made Strat. Your review has convinced me to spend a little more cash on a set of Texas Specials and keep it all American - Thanks
I have a 2017 American special I love the sound of my pickups there's such a wide variety of sounds you can get from Texas specials and what I really like about them is they don't have a lot of hum , in my opinion you don't need a humbucker when you got Texas specials !
I love the Custom Shop Texas Specials. I had the fat 50s in my strat...didnt really care for them. I installed Lollar Dirty Blondes...sounded good but not enough output...Installed Fender hot noiseless...sounded okay but kinda lifeless...Installed Texas Specials and voila!!! Love my tone now. Sure they can be a bit bright but thats what the tone knobs on the guitar are for!! They cut through in a band and sound great with my super reverb and dumble ods clone...i am very happy with these pickups.
I’ve custom shop TS on my Am Special tele and I think they’re some of the best I’ve ever heard. Warm, clear, articulate, punchy, loud and beautiful sounding. I’ve yet to play them on a Strat. I’d love an Am Special Strat but the big headstock is a deal breaker. I find vintage pickups weak and are too fizzy with overdrive.
I bought a 2016 NAMM PostModern Tele with Handwound Texas Special PuP's and really liked the texture and more organic tone given off the neck PuP in particular. The guitar has a maple finger board with Okume body. It's loud and highly resonant. From playing this guitar I never understood the internet fascination with Tele PuP's not being good or at least not as desirable as a Strat neck PuP. It was my first expensive Fender that gave me the feeling "...that's the cut above custom shop tone I'm looking for..." guitar. I liked the PuP's so much I put a set of the Strat version labelled Custom Shop Texas Special (around $200, but not handwound as far as I know) into a 2008 Fender Deluxe Strat. Yes the character was in the same ballpark, but it did not really "do it" for me the same. To be honest I've usually found chasing the tone and feel of one guitar by putting in similar parts and electronics on anther guitar only gets you so far. The magic in my experience can't be recreated the same... I guess it's just because all guitars are slightly different. I don't think anyone needs to get into Tone Wood debates as I think we can all accept that two guitars built to the same spec can still sound different enough for a customer to prefer one over the other, whether that's in terms of feel, tone or both. Having said this about chasing tone.... it's still fun to give it a go if you have the time and cash :-) Here is my latest tone chasing endeavour.... A set of SRV style PuP's resulting from UK PeachGuitar owners years of trying to get as close to SRV tone as possible. Admittedly John (the owner) is using TOP shelf gear $$,$$$. But from these two demo's I convinced myself it was worth a go with a lively '64 Custom Shop Strat I own. The PuP's are currently on route to me having just passed customs in LA :-) Checkout Dan Patlansky's video from this web page: www.peachguitars.com/mf-guitars-peach-guitars-number-one-pickup-set.htm Guitar.com also sponsored PeachGuitars to make the following video: ua-cam.com/video/Lk9rg9-oh0g/v-deo.html Enjoy!

Perfect sound. Texas specials, vintage 65 grey pickups they put on those 60s style American originals and the Esquire pickup they made for the 70th anniversary Esquire are still the best I have experienced.Texas special Telecaster pickups were used on some of the Japanese 52 style Teles and are fantastic at full blast or low level .
I've got a Fender Ed O'Brien sustainer Strat, which has a Texas Special in the middle position. It's a really nice pickup, either by itself or with the bridge pickup. Volume-wise, it keeps up with the other two pickups.

SRV never used Texas Specials....they just put them in his signature Strat as a marketing ploy. Texas Specials came out around 1990 and that was the same year SRV died, so I doubt he used them much, if at all! Maybe he planned to, but that's not what you hear on his records. Just put my old set sat in my cupboard over 20+ years in my old squire in my new Strat. Love the sound. More vi thaw than I remember but having a bridge that isn’t shrill and has quack as well as a middle position that’s durable and a blusey neck is perfect 🙏

I've been asking a close friend to do a video on The Faces of Rock! I think it will be very entertaining for all who wail ! Leave me some feedback on my tracks, peace ✌🏻
Fender manufactured a Texas Special version which had lower windings and a distinctly inferior sound compared to the standard TS. The DC resistance of the P/U should be about N: 6.2K ohms; M 6.5K ohms and B: 6.7 K ohms measured on the uninstalled P/U. The inferior TS version had no P/U over 6K ohms. Not sure whether they did this to save on copper wire.
I'm really enjoying my 2016 Am Special. I just put the Free-Way 10 position switch in it and I would recommend the mod. I had a '71 Strat that I bought in '71. Other than the satin finish on the neck, my current Strat is a much better instrument. The '71s were being mass produced due to the demand created by Hendrix. I ordered mine and it took 6 months to get it. It was a lemon, they actually shipped it with heavy strings to pull the neck straight... big twist at the 7th fret from a knot. Anyway, nice demo.
I had a thought about these pickups and came to the conclusion that as awesome as they are they are not designed for a maple neck strat. I had Texas special pickups on my maple neck strat for 20 plus years and they were not quite the right sound for me. I think the extra midrange that txs pickups make a rosewood neck strat sound brigher like a maple neck strat in my opinion. Fantastic added growl for rosewood but remember the no#1 strat isn't Maple so it's too much midrange. After my personal discovery with this I have finally replaced my texas specials with Fender custom shop 69 pickups and at last I have the tone I want. Totally love SRV but maybe Fender should consider Lenny pickups specifically for maple neck strats. Just my opinion.
Do you use the same amplifier and settings as when you try the lipstick ?, friend, why is the sound of the texas not convincing? I see that you liked me a lot, but don't you think they are sweeter, brighter, responsive, sharp, the lipstick? which one will you stay with?
Had the Texas Specials for a long period of time in my only strat as a teen (oh, thats roughly 15years ago). Now I am mostly using 50s style strats, but your video (good as always!!!) makes me think... Maybe I should install them back into my American Deluxe? Sound was always cool!!! Greetz from Hamburg, Germany Phil :-)
I am interested in a soft clean tone with little sustain. Do texas pickups have that tone. I tried the player series pickups but gave them away because they don't have the sound I want on a Strat. I don't want MiM pickups because they have a narrowed sound range and sound "phoney" without treble and bass tones. Now I play Aria STG 006 strat but need alnico pickups, not ceramic as Aria.
Very good sound, one question I hope you can help me teacher, at what height in millimeters do you recommend installing the Texas special bass and trebble side pickups? greetings and thanks
I have these set in my strat, today I decided to replace the bridge pickup for higher gain stuff, so I put in a jb jr. It sounds beautiful, that 80s metal tone. However I lost the sound of position 2 with single coils. The humbucker and middle single coil sound very thin and shrill with no character. I'm debating on going back to the original set.
I have both Texas Specials and Hot Noiseless that I have tried out. They seem to be close in tone and not certain which one I prefer, at the moment I am using the Hot Noiseless but keep thinking of putting the Texas Specials back in. I need to get another Stratocaster, ha ha. It would be a good comparison between those two with maybe including the Vintage Noiseless.
I just got a 2003 MIM Fender Stratocaster: trying to decide on what pickups I should upgrade too… I have the fender genuine parts locking and staggered tuners going on and want to upgrade the pickups. Ideas?
I traded for this guitar. The guy didn't have the trem arm and bought one at GC. I didn't use it when testing it out. Once I did go to screw it in it did not work. The arm would hit the knobs and scrape the body and felt a bit loose. Seems like it should be a longer are on the end where it screws in. I'm trying to see if anyone knows what trem are will work for this guitar. Thanks
Hey Jack, do you have any idea if there's any sound difference between the "Custom Shop Texas Specials" and those just marked "Texas Specials"? I've read stuff on forums saying there's a difference between but we all know how reliable that is! Just wondering if the more expensive custom shops are worth it. Thanks for the video!
As far as I know it’s the same set but a different name - perhaps an evolution of the original wind? I’d have to look more closely into it but that was my understanding. I believe the only set currently offered is the one labeled Custom Shop
Great review and beautiful playing as always Jack, I was just wondering what your honest opinion of Fender noiseless pups in the Roadhouse Deluxe, if any😬 Also in semi hollow guitars is a laminate neck preferable. If yes how so😬 Great work you do here Jack😎 stay well my friend!
Thank you! Fender Noiseless pickups are solid I think. On their own they sound pretty good, however, I think when you play them back to back with other pickups, they sound a little stale. Not bad, just not quite as vibrant.
Good morning friend, I turn to you for a consultation, I just bought some used texas special pickups, they look like new, I have already checked photos and everything corresponds that they are original, but as for the ohms they are well below what the manufacturer specifies, Neck 5.6K, Medium 6K, and Bridge 6.3K (I already used 2 multimeters in case there was a measurement error), while the manufacturer specifies that they must be 6.2K 6.5K 6.7K, will they take turns or would we suspect they are false? I appreciate your valuable comment, best regards!
Not entirely related to the Texas specials, but regarding the Fender custom shop pickups in general... I have the CS 69 set in a strat. Oh my goodness. I haven’t tried the fat 50s set, but they sound nice too. All hail Fender, the pickup manufacturer that also dabbles in building guitars.
I'm about to buy the texas special or the 69, which one do you recommend? Is the loss of signal much felt at 69? I want to play like vaughan, but also enjoy crystalline sounds like leny's song or rivera paradise ...
So just curious, i kind of fell out of learning playing guitar due to work/school schedule for a few years. Been learning a bit recently. So i know that Fender American Standard strats have been discontinued. What is the closest current model they have to those?
I have this guitar in a different finish and love the sound of the pickups. Swapping out the bridge for a hot rails tho, because who uses the bridge on a strat anyway 😎
Jack, nice video on the Texas Specials! I actually have those in my Strat and I'm looking for something different for a Strat build. I saw in a comment that you tend to prefer 50's style pickups in a Strat. Do you have any favorite 50s pickups? Any particular Fender 50s pickup or perhaps different brand that you like? Thanks!
Texas specials are my favorite pickups.
I’ve had Texas specials in my Strat since 94. That’s what they came with. They have a heavy Strat sound. If they were good enough for SRV they are good enough for me.

I believe it’s called the Fender Grease Bucket circuit
@@JackFossett googles*
fascinating schematic.
I like these ones too but not the custom shop ones, the made in Mexico ones sound more to me like Ritchie Blackmore, one of my favs :)
Thanks
I put a left handed trem arm on my strat...it sticks waaaay out! Lol!
Great question. Hope he answers!
As far as I know it’s the same set but a different name - perhaps an evolution of the original wind? I’d have to look more closely into it but that was my understanding. I believe the only set currently offered is the one labeled Custom Shop
Texas special is custom shop
the middle pickup is great!!
My Wife: "You cannot buy a guitar because of the Surf Green color." Me: "Watch me."
Bought a 1997 Roadhouse with the Texas Specials. Anyone know what is the differences in TS?
amazing! i got a question brother, those are the texas special or texas special custom shop? those are the classic one isn't?
Can you dial out the aggressiveness? I HATE harsh attack and always preferred a smooth, chimey strat
He said he can dial out ur ma
What about the hum? Is there any when you crack the overdrive?
That neck pickup sound sooooo good dude!
Right? Way better than you'd think
@@JackFossett Totally dude! Love the little slide riff at 0:26 ^w^
@@JackFossett why would they be better than you think?
Has anyone tried a mismatch set / combo? For example Texas Special (bridge)/ Fat 50s (middle)/ Custom 54 (neck). Is it any good?`
So just curious, i kind of fell out of learning playing guitar due to work/school schedule for a few years. Been learning a bit recently. So i know that Fender American Standard strats have been discontinued. What is the closest current model they have to those?
Current equivalent would be the American pro II
@@JackFossett thank you very much. Appreaciate it
What kind of amp are you using 🤔????
I have this guitar in a different finish and love the sound of the pickups. Swapping out the bridge for a hot rails tho, because who uses the bridge on a strat anyway 😎
Ces micros ont vraiment un son d'enfer, vintage vitaminé, pas asseptisés, et ça c'est vraiment cool
Thanks!
Thank you! I really like Lust for Tone 57 Lustcasters. Great pickups, I have a few sets.
Yeah Man!🔝👏🎸
Do Texas specials for tele sound like strat Texas specials or more like traditional tele pickups?
My 61 custom telecaster has a Texas special hand wound pickup in the bridge, it sounds great!
Was that weezer?
If it's good enough for Mark Knopfler, it's definitely good enough for us.
is these really marks go to? his sound is really what I look for. thanks
I like the reverb those pickups have .
I prefer the subtle overdrive of that neck.
Sounds like a G&L Legacy
v warm to muddy - not very 'stratty'
great playing - lots of variety
Damn! I am the 665th like! Shit!
🤣
VERGA
Quit talking and play.....I do like the demo
These pickups are not good.
why?
???????
80% of talk 20% of sound.
I know, numbers are hard
