    The difference in these missles is that they stay close to the ground to avoid detection, the ones we use now are small or have to achieve apogee in the stratosphere.

    • @julieinthenorthwest4594
      @julieinthenorthwest4594 12 днів тому +3

      The difference is not "...that they stay close to the ground to avoid detection" but use their speed and maneuverability to nullify air defenses. The cruise missiles' advantage is because they stay close to the surface (ground or water) to avoid detection. Both missiles have the advantage of low altitude with the hypersonic having an additional advantage of speed.

    We had Mach 2-3 jets, 50 years ago....

    • @dial2616
      @dial2616 12 днів тому +9

      1. High mach was only achievable on those jets under specific conditions, at extreme altitudes where the air resistance is low enough to go that fast. They were not flying at mach 3 in the low-altitude terminal regime where a missile is dangerous (the friction would destroy them).
      2. Mach 5 is simply the minimum reported speed, the agreed minimum to reach the "hypersonic" label. Given that this is a boost-glide weapon, it's entirely feasible that you could accelerate it to mach 20 and beyond if you have enough altitude and the structure is sound.

    The MGM-31 Pershing Missile was a MACH 5-6 missile so I'm a little amused at all the hoopla over hypersonic this-that-and-the-other-thing. The Pershing Missile was first fielded in 1962 by the way.

    • @mattb8754

      I think because the speeds are accomplished at lower altitudes as opposed to the edge of space.

    • @dial2616
      @dial2616 12 днів тому +2

      Mach 6 is pretty low for a ballistic missile like the Pershing - even Iran has better ones in a head-to-head speed test. This is more about reentry vehicles, which follow a quasi-ballistic path and then behave more like a cruise missile at high speeds to evade defenses. Maintaining a mach 8+ boost-glide phase is still an unsolved problem around the world, so it will be interesting to see the max speed of this once it's declassified.

This is, perhaps, the strongest argument for a morality superior to materialism, and a religion that refuses to be bullied by science. Moral progress must still be made morally; and a modern scientist, who has invented the most complex mechanism, or liberated the most subtle gas, has still exactly the same spiritual problem before him as that which confronted Cain, when he stood with a ragged stone in his hand."

      There’s a difference between. Russia’s missiles aren’t maneuverable. To be truly considered a hypersonic missile as defined today it must fly over Mach 5 and be maneuverable. It’s why Russia’s Zircon and Kinzhal have both been shot down Ukraine. They aren’t maneuverable, meaning they have predictable flight paths, which makes them easier to intercept.

      Only in Russia’s dreams. Neither the Zircon or Kinzhal are truly hypersonic since they aren’t maneuverable, and it’s Russia that has the long history of copying from the west, and uses western technology in its advanced weaponry. Russia is decades behind in every way imaginable. Just look at the F-117 that flew over 40 years ago. It’s still has a smaller radar cross section than the Su-57. Or look at the T-14 Armada, another example of overhyped Russian weaponry. Or how about the S-400 that Russia has bragged as being the best in the world, and yet it fails repeatedly to protect strategic targets, and it’s been destroyed numerous times by the 30 year old ATACMS missile that it supposedly is supposed to be able to defeat.

  • @spmadeinusa4594

    SAN suffers from the same syndrome as most UA-cam channels. Discussions inevitably consider only one element of the overall system, independent of the strategic context within which it operates. Decades ago the US DOD started down a path to duplicate the effects of nuclear weapons, without the downsides of fallout, radiation, etc. This element of the system will put at risk time sensitive, deeply buried, and well defended targets. The advantage over comparable Russian and Chinese missiles isn't the Dark Eagle, per se. The advantage comes from adding another widely distributed lethal node to a growing network of sensors, links, analysis, and shooters. Take out crucial command and control elements of an adversary, hindered by systemic lack of initiative at the lower echelons (characteristic of militaries in authoritarian countries) and the impact grows far beyond any individual weapon's effectiveness.

    Mach 10
    For particularly important targets, Moscow has used the hypersonic Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile. Its high speed - able to briefly reach Mach 10 - and ability to maneuver in flight helps it evade air defenses, although Ukraine claims to have shot down a few of them.
    We need a way to stop these. Right now, USA aircraft carriers can be taken out.

      Definitely more than Mach 5 if you read the CRS report. But it can actually reach Mach 17 if you read it at twz the war zone. "The Pentagon has previously said that this weapon would allow the Army and Navy to “strike targets hundreds and even thousands of miles away” and that it will get up to a speed of Mach 17".

    Russia is doing Mach10+ and US is only doing Mach5. Now we know who is leading in the hypersonic missile war😊

    😂😂😂 Oshenik flies at Mach 10. Russia and China are leagues ahead here. US is copying their technology.

      Oreshnik is a medium range ballistic missile only to be called hypersonic cause it travels at hypersonic speeds 😂😂😂

      @@johnsilver9338 ballistic missiles can travel mach 20+, the oresnik is a ballistic missile not a true hypersonic.

      @@jimmykim4555 True. According to pentagon it's actually a modified RS-26 IRBM. But I also wonder if US will do the same thing just remove the nuclear payload from Trident or Minuteman. Or modify LRHW/CPS to have multiple warheads.

      China and Russia aren't leagues ahead in anything. Even if they ever completed anything impressive the U.S controls the chips supply, making their ability to produce this technology dependent on the U.S. Check your ignorance 😂
