- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video:
From A Fail To A Win !!
In this video I turn an epic fail into a win. I turn a piece of spalted beech into a vase, then experiment with dye. When this fails, I remove the finish and create an ebonized oak base. I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, and thought this piece was an epic win, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

As cool as the original design was, I appreciate seeing the natural grain of the wood. Well done and nice save.
Thanks man. It’s nice to experiment though right?
I agree 🌴🍊🐊
I was so happy to see it go back to the natural wood!! It’s beautiful!
Beautiful work 👏! You made the right choice. The spalting in that wood is amazing. Hard to beat mother nature's artwork. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
What a journey! I had so many thoughts during this: "Why would you cover up that gorgeous wood?" "The dye looks cool, what's the fail there?" "Oh I see, that finish is not stable at all!" I'm glad you went back to the original wood, it looks really good with the black base.
The paint technique looked cool…it looked like blown art glass. And the natural wood looks great with the black base. I’m guessing you used a primer before the color application. If it had shellac in it, the tannins shouldn’t have leached out. I think this technique is worth another try. I like where this is headed if you’re willing to try it again. Best of luck to you!
I'm glad the original finish was a fail. That wood is BEAUTIFUL!
👍🏻😊
Knowing when to scrap a finished look definitely worked out on this piece. I absolutely love it!!
When you sprayed the white I am like "NO!! What is he doing!!" I love the 'paint splatter' effect the wood gives. Beautiful!
I’m glad you took the paint off. The natural wood is so pretty.
Much better. When you started painting that beautiful grain, I was gonna stop watching but I'm glad I waited. Beautiful now.
Thank you for sharing your idea. Even if you didn't like the outcome, you when back to the machine and grind the color off and put it in his natural beauty. Beautiful job the first and last. Beautiful!
Thanks Rose. Glad you enjoyed it. 😊👍🏻
I made wood turning when I was 14-15 YO, and what I see here gives me the taste to return to that, and I am 73 by now. What a nice lobby.
Like others above, it was a nice try with white epoxy and color spots, but the grain of this special piece of wood is unlikely. Bravo.
You definitely should give it a try buddy 👍🏻
As epic as that spalting is, I had trouble figuring out why youd cover it. But experimenting is a must to lubricate the creative flow. Nicely done sir. 🤝
That wood is beautiful. I'm so glad to see it so respectfully preserved in its natural glory.
I love spalted wood and thought you were nuts covering it up. Sorry your dye failed but am very glad you got it back to spalt. I just did a spalted urn and cut an 1/2” inset in the lid and put my badge and wings in it then poured resin over the whole thing. It is really solid.
That sounds like a treat for the eye~!
Absolutely beautiful, I just wanted to just be itself all along I’m glad that you saw that the wood is beautiful . I would love to have that , I would display that in my house proudly !💜
seeing the wood is far more enjoyable than when you painted it. great job!
I totally agree! Do you always prefer wood over paint finish?
i have to say i do indeed prefer wood over paint. i sometimes see woodturners apply a "colored" finish... such as yellowish or similar, where i find the natural grain color is beautiful enough. but, that being said, other finishes don't necessarily take away from the beauty of the wood.
I was so happy when you removed the paint and dyes. I thought the wood was so beautuful naturally. It was a gorgeous finish.
I nearly wept when you painted it. Im so glad you took it off in the end.
Glad you scraped off that colored stuff. That is a beautiful turning .
Love how you can remove it as if it were never there. Incredible.
Beautiful vase, perfect choice of wood. I like the natural wood versus the colored one
The resin and ink finish was really cool and I hope you try it again on a piece of wood with less character. But absolutely the right call here...letting that spectacular spalting show itself off!
The end product was GREAT!
That natural woodgrain is AMAZING.
Glad you removed the dyed finish, the wood is beautiful. Good save ❗👍
Oh Jack. I love this way better than the first.
Beautiful piece of work there Jack as usual! 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing!
My favorites are FABRIC and OUT OF THIS WORLD.
When i start watching this wideo i see just beautiful spalted maple wood. When you painted with white epoxy resin i said oh noooo. In the end you make beautiful peace of art.
Can't say I am sad the staining didn't work out. The epic spalting deserves to be showcased.
It would have been very visible on the internal part of the vase.
Masterful rescue! You will have to try this one again.
Couldn't understand why you chose such an interesting piece of wood to try that with. Was very pleased to see you turn the resin off.
I’m glad you took the piece back to natural wood! However, the white with the unique dye pattern was also kinda cool! Please do the colour version again, but with a more nondescript wood piece. That way you get best of both worlds
Hi . You are right to tell him you liked the coloring the wood . I am studied in accademia di bella arti di firenze and I am painting and drawing . I am Lebanese . Best regards .
There is no right and wrong when it comes to opinion Omar
@@JackMackWoodturning you are right . But I thinking your friends group . I don't want to do some things wrong .
@@omarchammaa4555 sorry dude that made no sense to me
When you began spray painting the urn, I started screaming at the screen. No! That beautiful wood!!! I’m so glad that was a fail. It was pretty, but the wood is prettier.
Beautiful piece of art ❤ this wood grain needed to be seen.
The first design was really nice but I personally like the natural wood. U do fantastic work!!
I prefer the final version. The wood is so beautiful and dramatic. Much better than the painted version which was actually better than I expected. Try it again sometime with a lesser piece of wood.
Thanks L. Again with dye or no dye?
Glad you enjoyed it. I reckon you will like my latest vid.

Do you ever think, "Every time I sharpen this, it gets a little smaller. One day it will be gone"?
Good call on the finish, by the way. That wood is too beautiful to be covered up.
The original design reminded me of the Easter Eggs my mom used to paint, back when you could buy actual Haas egg dye that you could paint on the eggs. I miss those.
Thanks a lot TP. Sounds like you had some great Easters! 😊👍🏻
Have to admit I almost cried when I watched you pull out the paint...but definitely am glad the wood spoke up and you brought it back to it's natural beauty. It truly is a stunning piece!
I about died when you covered up that beautiful wood.
Beautiful result! Thank you for sharing your time and projects!👍🤟🪡🎨
Beautiful! I have had things go bad on me, I think what's most important is if you can recover the piece, and you did that in amazing fashion! Fantastic work brother!!
Gorgeous! Interesting with the colour but absolutely love the natural wood! Stunning on the black base!!
Hi Jack Well done you I'd of thrown a wobbly and throw it away great save it looks awesome thanks for not given up. The natural spalting and the grain of the wood is magnificent. Can't wait foryour next video.
Thanks Amanda. Did you prefer the revised version?
@@JackMackWoodturning I actually liked the both but the revised one is what nature is made to look like.
Great save Jack. The final result is beautiful.
I liked the second finish much better! Thanks, Good job.
Yep paint/dye effect is a super cool concept. I hope you can get it to work in the future and show us. This piece is gorgeous with the spalting though. But I really want to see this paint/dye technique come to life!
Me too. Needs a little perfecting I think
The natural wood looks much better, another beauty, ❤️ From Boston
Scary stuff there for a while. Glad that Nature's way carried the day. Thanks, Jack for showing us all of it!
This did turn out beautiful, but I loved the white with all of the colors. I hope you try it again.
A beautiful work undone for more spectacular finish.
It looks very very beautiful. I love it. I love the way the wood grain looks.
Wow, what a great idea for a steady rest. Those look like dryer drum bearings. I'm glad you chose the natural finish. The spalting in that wood was amazing.
Thanks. The splaying would have been on display either way as the inside of the vase was fully visible. 👍🏻
I didn't know where you were going with this, while the "splatter" was very cool.... I LOVE the natural wood so much more!
Wow Jack! That was an awesome and exciting transformation man👍. Loved both designs. What a piece! Priceless..
Well then as one would say..
Well hello again.wow this wood is interesting inside many ways. I love the pattern on the wood. It would look beautiful polished. Looks like someone has splattered something on it. Isn’t wood fascinating. Well I wasn’t expecting the colour you added but it is so cool 😎 how amazing. So so beautiful. Excellent job. Both looks were great but my favourite is the finished piece.
Thanks Sue. Me too. Did you like the colours though?
@@JackMackWoodturning yes I did I love the colours it was gorgeous.
Everything you have done has been AMAZING. 😍😍😍😍
Thanks Maddy. Which one was your favourite though?
The entire time I was watching this I was wondering, 'Why cover up that crazy woodgrain pattern?'. LOL
What you thought was a fail was very pretty, but I much prefer the natural wood grains. My dad and my late husband both did so much wood working, and I loved watching them, helping when I could. I have several pieces of their handiwork in my home, and love it. My dad worked mostly with pine, but husband worked with oak, cedar, and black walnut from our property. It's all deeply loved
The paint was nice, but like the wood better. It's beautiful just the way it is
I totally agree!
I think you might like my latest vid:

Jack Mack for the save. I bet that holds about 6 or 7 pints eh? Great job once again.
Beautiful, like waves in the ocean
Lovely
When you started painting it white I was yelling "No!!" at my screen. I just thought the wood was so cool and beautiful. Something about it reminds me of an old world map. Thanks for saving it!
I'm from Malta 🇲🇹. I love seeing you working. It's amazing how you turn that piece of wood into a beautiful artwork. Please keep on sharing your work with us.
🇧🇷Such a magnificent and unique piece of art. Very beautiful.
Good save. Looked great both ways. End results are great.
Great piece of srt - you brought out the inner grain wonderfully!
I love the patterns in the natural wood Jack. I did like the colour, but when you removed it the beauty showed itself. I hope you had a good week Jack ? 😊
It’s beautiful. Love how it turned out. Reminds me of a old pirate treasure map!!
I want it. Fantastic, you really are skilled, the wood grain is outstanding.
I love the final outcome so much!! I would love to have that piece. I am so impressed with your work; it looks like so much fun to do.
Loving those wood curls!!
You had me worried. The end results are gorgeous!
Thanks T. If at first you don’t succeed…
I was definitely grumpy when you covered the wood so...yay for failures lol. I'd probably try it again on something with a less interesting pattern. I think the Universe just knew that wood needed to be seen.
Great again Jack, look forward to seeing what you've been working on every week. I personally preferred the original, may have shouted NOO when you shaved it all off, I would have loved having that on my shelf, perfect or not it was different and a 100% one off. To be honest all your stuff is, I'd be pleased to own any of your work, your a real talent. Don't give up on the paint idea though, try it again, may work better next time 😀
I'm soo happy u ended up just leaving this to be a natural beauty!
I'm a fan of color/tye dye messiness but when I saw u cover up that amazing natural pattern I was so sad! Sooo glad I stayed until the end of the video!!!
Love you work n your eye for your creations!
Absolutely gorgeous
I liked to effect of the resin and dyes, but that spalting with the black base came out amazing !
Thank frank
Love the colours but nature sure is beautiful.😘😘
Looking forward to the next try with the paint effect.
That turned out amazing! Love the grain pattern on this piece.
Thanks M. Did you prefer the final piece to the original idea?
It is quite beautiful isn't it?
@@JackMackWoodturning I loved the idea and look of the paint and think they both were nice. The paint was fun and the natural grain is classic. It's like we got 2 videos in 1!
That grain would have been a mistake to hide. Good Choice and well done!
Thanks G. Glad you enjoyed it. I reckon you will like my latest vid.

Beautiful! Well done!
Thank you
Very pretty, much better than the painted one.
great recovery, natural looks fantastic👍👍
The natural wood design is far better than the painted version.
I liked the colour work but I'm glad you ended up with the natural grain.
Super great job!!!!

Thanks man. Good to see you as always. Which was your favourite?
Love the natural look. Am glad the first idea didn't work out! Beautiful.
Well saved jack I do prefer the natural beauty of the wood
Beautiful piece. I was surprised you were going to paint it and what a happy accident that it did not work out.
The wood is beautiful,l love this too
Hello Jack good job looks great well done
Отлично ! Вначале было 👎 . Но потом ты убрал краску , и получилось очень круто , очень красиво !! ! Супер ! 👍👍👍👌
Awesome - the natural look is way better - really luv that spalting 😉
I like them both, but that first one was pretty cool
it was a great idea but it definitely looks better natural than painted
