Local tradition has it that Mary, Queen of Scots, once visited Beauly and had exclaimed: "C'est un beau lieu", whereby came the name Beauly. Muir of Ord was called Tarradale until 1862. Historically access to the village was limited by the natural obstacles of the River Beauly and the River Conon. This changed in 1814 with the construction of the Conon Bridge. In 1835, whisky distilling operations were legally granted in the village and by 1885, the Mill of Ord produced 80,000 imperial gallons per year. Dingwall is derived from the Scandinavian Þingvöllr, which means field or meeting-place of the thing, or local assembly. Altnabreac is from the Scots Gaelic Allt nam Breac, meaning "the stream of the trout". Originally Thurso was known by the Celtic name of tarvodubron meaning "bull water" or "bull river". Norse influence translated its name to Thjorsá, then altered it to Thorsá, based on the deity of Thor and translating as (the place on) Thor's River. Thurso functioned as an important Norse port, and later traded with ports throughout northern Europe until the 19th century.
The northernmost station in the DPRK is Rajin station in Rasŏn Special City. Rasŏn is important as it is an ice-free port on the border with China and Russia. Before 1991, Rason was used by the Soviet Union as an alternative warm-water port in case Vladivostok was unavailable. Rajin is the junction point and terminus of both the Hambuk and P'yŏngra lines of the Korean State Railway, with the latter line serving Pyongyang. The Korean State Railway operates over 5,248 km of railway, of which 4,725 km (2,936 mi) is standard gauge. Of the total, 3,893.5 km of the standard gauge lines are electrified, 4,243 km total electrified! Much of it was electrified during the 1950s and 1960s as the country rebuilt.

There's an ongoing and highly unusual problem at Altnabreac just now. Network Rail need access along the private estate roads to the station - to equip it with the new passenger operated stop request apparatus, but have no right of way over it as it has only existed since the 1980s, and the landowner is refusing them access... If you'd like to understand what they're up against some more, you might want to refer to Dixe Wills' book, "Small Stations," and its chapter about his visit to Altnabreac, when he dared knock on the door of the former station hotel, whose occupants may or may not be one and the same... Hence, the station is "temporarily closed," pending the outcome of their ongoing negotiations - or lack thereof...

Whoa, what a scenic line! Growing up in New York, it reminds me of the MTA Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line which goes from NYC to Poughkeepsie and is part of Amtrak's Empire Corridor to Niagara Falls. The line is electrified up to Croton-Harmon and is right next to the Hudson River, so it provides spectacular views of the Hudson Palisades and Hudson Highlands across the river. The Far North Line has a very unique station called Dunrobin Castle which was built as a private, single-platform halt for the Duke of Sutherland to serve Dunrobin Castle. The station closed in 1965 but reopened in 1985 and is now a request stop, although it is only open during the summer months! One of only two stations on the whole National Rail network open for the summer months, the other also in Scotland, Falls of Cruachan on the West Highland Line for hikers climbing Ben Cruachan. The Metro-North Railroad actually has a few stations dedicated for hikers, Manitou and Breakneck Ridge on the Hudson Line, and Appalachian Trail on the Harlem Line, the latter of which is the only rail station directly located on the whole Appalachian Trail!
In the US, the northernmost station is Fairbanks Depot in Alaska which is also the northernmost rail station in the whole of North America! It is served by the Alaska Railroad's Denali Star and Aurora Winter Train between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The Denali Star runs during the summer months while the Aurora Winter Train runs during the non-summer months. Besides going between Alaska's two biggest cities, many tourists use the Alaska Railroad to reach Denali National Park. The park and contiguous preserve encompass 6,045,153 acres which is larger than the state of New Hampshire. Denali is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet (about 6,190 m) above sea level. While Mount Everest has the highest peak, Denali is the tallest mountain in the world from base-to-peak on land, measuring 18,000 ft or about 5,500 m.

Just stumbled across your channel after viewing some local (Aussie) stuff on a cold winter's day in Melbourne. I did this trip myself 6 years ago (September 2018), stopped off at Dunrobin Castle on the way and took the later train to both Thurso and Wick (had some lovely fish'n'chips at Wick) before returning to Inverness where I was based for a week. Thanks for the memories. Must get around to checking out more of your videos too when time allows. Cheers from Michael.🙂

Years ago, I used to go to Thurso a lot.
The biggest change I see is that it used to be a corridor on one side and compartments. My entire journey was from Glasgow leaving at 20.45 and get turfed out in Inverness for 40 minutes and then into the "new" train .
Having deliberately not gone to bed the night before I was able to sleep until Thurso, then after a short bus trip sleep again on the boat until I was woken up by the ferry hooter! A journey of about 18 hours or so.
    No trains in Orkney, sorry!

  • @walterfillingham

The interesting ship you seen is either delivering or collecting oil drilling pipelines from a spool base at the location you seen.. (Technip). The Far North Line and Kyle Lines are all controlled by the signalling centre in Inverness, drivers use a radio for communication throughout the journey, you can often hear the driver talking to the signalling centre if you sit at the front of the train. You will see large masts and many stations throughout to help aid communication for the driver/signaller

With Muir of Ord, The tracks are set to face the opposite platform, the trains just push them to go back to single
Also, With Goergemas Junction, A Very Very Long time age, the train use to split there, a part of the train would go to Thurso, Part to Wick, and at Wick, it would split again and would go down the now very much abandoned and I believe ripped up line down to Lybster

    • @barrieshepherd7694
      @barrieshepherd7694 14 днів тому +1

Accurately it is RETB Radio Electronic Token Block developed by BR Research and BR's S & T Department. This was developed from an earlier Radio Token Block system that replaced the overhead cable route used with traditional token block equipment. This was to enable the line to be kept open after the pole route (for the old token machines) blew down in a bad winter and the cost of rebuilding was very prohibitive..
Later the cost of maintaining the token equipment, buildings and staff (who were retiring) also became prohibitive and the RETB system, which puts the Token on display in the drivers cab was developed.
It initially operated from a Control Centre in Dingwall which has now been moved to Inverness. The West Highland line, north of Garelochhead, is similarly equipped operating from a Control Centre in Fort William.
Since the original installation back in the 1980's additional equipment has been added to bring TPWS onto the line as well as passenger initiated Request Stop facilities.

Though it was only this last October that I explored the West Coast of Scotland, doing the circuit of the East Coast to Aberdeen and across to the West Coast and linking with the bus onto Sky. Taking the Jacobite from Mallaig to Fort William (what a treat that was for £35 and quite unexpected without me booking!) and staying in the Signal Box at Corrour. Not to mention running the Loch Ness Marathon. It was nearly a week of breathtaking scenery and countryside from the train ❤

Can I make one request though.
You said you were excited "for" the journey.
Does the journey experience levels of excitement?
Surely you're excited 'about' the journey?
I have noticed people coming out with this grammatically incorrect bollocks for a while now (I am constantly correcting my daughter (and obviously she recognises I am a cool dad)).
Please don't fall into those miscreant ways.

As for the altnabreac thing, no trains are stopping there at the moment, owing to a dispute with a nearby homeowner and network rail over access to the station

The ship at 2:46 looks to be some sort of offshore supply vessel, they're commonly used in the area to transport goods, crew, or equipment around the offshore oil and gas installations in the North Sea, however it looks like that one is perhaps carrying and laying a load of cables or pipes.

On the right-hand running, a bunch (I don't think all, but certainly most) of the loops on the West Highland Line have been set up for right-hand running since the introduction of RETB and removal of local signal boxes in the 80s - with the simplification of the line it was easier to allow facing point access to the sidings (which are mostly on the right hand side in the direction of travel) from the right hand loop to ease shunting, rather than have to manually pump the points into the right positions and back again. Not that that makes much difference now with how little the vast majority of the sidings are used, but that was the intention. I think a couple on the Far North Line were reconfigured for the same reason.
