Jimin said that the tracks on his album reflect a progression or sequence of his feelings during the pandemic and the subsequent decisions made by the band members to combine their required military obligation with exploration of their individual artistry. Set Me Free is the 5th of a 6 track album. After anger, escapism, and lone reflection, he is shedding an old me and revealing the new.
For people that have been around for a while, who've seen and heard it all throughout the years, Jimin certainly makes you sit up and take notice. He is an exceptionally talented artist with the IT factor. It's like tasting a new dish where the flavours just burst in your mouth. For some, that's overwhelming, but for others, like me, it's pure heaven!
Thanks for reacting!! The song and the MV actually, why is it looks simple it has a lot of meaning. Sorry, this is long, but I do hope you read it. In an interview with Jimin: When the track list of the album was revealed, many noticed that the prerelease single was designated as “pt. 2” despite the fact that Jimin doesn’t have any existing song to his name titled “Set Me Free”. He confirmed that it’s a nod to a track on bandmate Suga’s second mixtape, D2. “There isn’t a connection, and we weren’t trying to divide one or two parts,” he explains. “But since it turns out my song talks about freedom and moving forward, and Suga’s song talks about some of the stories that come before, I thought it would be good to come after that.” Personally, I loved this song except the auto-tune part when I first heard it but now, I love it. When BTS use auto-tune like in this, in a very distinct way, it usually has a deeper meaning. It connects to their album called Map of the Soul 7 album which is inspired by the Carl Jung Theory of Persona, Shadow, and Ego. Each of these (Persona, Shadow, Ego) are also solo BTS songs on the album that explain their perspective of what those mean in correlation too with the psychology theory. The shadow is something that we have a hard time with, trails, temptations, as well as things that if people knew about you would shame you or "cancel" you so to speak, etc. So, you will hear him "battling" the shadow/auto tune with his clear voice...If you listen to Shadow (the song by Suga), you will also understand better what I meant too... For Set Me Free set: Also, the 6 or 9 shape (depending on which way you flip it) that the dancers make and Jimin is dancing in the circle until he gets to the middle. That structure is called Fibonacci sequence. It has a lot of mathematical meaning that I honestly can't write very well about or understand super well, but it connects to the message of this song. I personally kind of interpret it as the line of the song that says, "fly away butterfly", because the 9 is last single number and where the numbers start all over again after, so with the lyrics he is "reborn" after the first round/way/1-9. He is reborn because at first, he is a caterpillar then eventually turns into a butterfly... Fun Fact (credit goes to CSW7 on twitter) Jimin sings "Set Me Free" 9 times in the chorus, which made me curious what 9 means in numerology. If this wasn't intentional it's one h*ll of a coincidence. Things they looked up... 9 is the last of the single-digit numbers that play a core role in the study of numerology and is the highest ranking of the cardinal numbers. 9 is the number of wisdom and experience. As the final numeral, the number 9 symbolizes awakening and inner wisdom through life experiences and struggles. The number 9 represents a complete journey according to numerology. As the final single-digit number, 9 signifies culmination, although not the final ending. Numerology 9 is more like fulfilling one cycle and preparing for the next one. It's the number that signals the end and a beginning-because as soon as one chapter ends, a new cycle will start. Fun Fact: (from Kate, PhD7 Run Beautiful on twitter) (she talks about the set design) The panopticon is the very old concept (like 1700s) that was meant to create model prisoners. So, the idea was the prisoners would be visible 24/7 in this large structure. So, while Jimin's lyrics are, "set me free", he is standing in a literal prison. This concept is now applied thinking about surveillance states (CCTV) and social media. (For the nerds this is the work of Foucault and then a bunch of social media, comms, and HCI have picked this up. The "tower" in the middle can actually be empty (self-policing by imagined guard). I could imagine two meanings as I think about it: 1. Jimin subverting the prison by being the guard (taking control) and/or 2. Jimin being his own guard as if he's being monitoring himself given his life experience and past policing from outsiders and talking control via the choreo and lyrics. This also connects to the lyrics, "Going insane to stay sane" which are also similar lyrics to BTS song called On (which you reacted to) the lyrics are, "To remain sane, one must go insane”. (Credit go to-Shreya Negi on Twitter) The poem Jimin has written on his body is in German and by a famous poet called Rainer Maria Rilke. The poem is called ‘I live my life in widening circles’ and was written in 1899. It's translation: - I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world I may not complete this last one but I will give myself to it I circle around God, around the primordial tower I've been circling for thousands of years and I still don't know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song? So basically, the song is about starting anew and "freeing" one's self from their shadow(s) and/or learning from them to move forward.

BTS also have a lot of different storylines that run throughout their music from personal stories to group stories, to their fictional storyline, each of their albums tell a story (sometimes it is a series different album like the Love Yourself albums), etc. I know it is a lot but take your time lol...BTS also has soo much content that even as a fan for like 2 years I have barely scratched the surface. I was hoping to catch up on their content when they announced they were taking a break (because of mandatory military service and also, they need to grow individually as well) to catch up but that isn't happening lol. There still is tons of content being released from all their solo endeavors. Anyways sorry for writing so much. I know you are reviewing music, but I would love to see you react to some interviews that Suga (a BTS member) created called Suwitcha (play on words with Suga and a solo song called Daewitcha). Wow! I absolutely love this explanation! Being an Army for 21/2 yrs now, but going down the rabbit hole of BTS, I have seen all of their transformations. Into the grown men with their innocence and struggle to become who they are today. Individuals but still their brotherhood shows through in everything they do… JIMIN is a unique sweet soul, with the talent and drive of a true star without acting like he feels special. He still struggles with wondering “why us” There are so many other talented groups in k-pop. He said this while riding in a car with his other members. Truly a raising star.

This is one of the songs from Jimin's EP, which is chronologically about what he went through during the pandemic. This song is about how he has been set free from the sadness and depression which he was using alcohol to cope with. You'll see that theme of escapism through his EP. I am glad you are reacting to Jimin's latest work. I enjoy watching you react because of your background as a boy band member and that you can sing and understand the skills and capabilities of the BTS members. Would love to see you react to their mama performance 2016 (12 minute stage) and their MMA performance in 2019. They had a 30 minute stage at that award show. It was unreal. To me the song lyrics talk about being free from expectations, being able to be oneself without fear of judgement. It is not about being free from the band. The members all stated repeatedly how they cannot wait to reunite as BTS in 2025 after military service. One thing you should know once you Jim-In you can't Jim-Out. he's now your bias. Congrats!
True. The members can not see themselves without BTS and not be where they are without BTS. The song and the German poem the Jimin sports are to reflect to one's true self disregarding expectations.
Jimin’s Face album is sooooo good. He is a brilliant artist both vocals and as a dancer. You should react to the BTS vocal line “The Truth Untold” live performance is pure magic.
The song is about Jimin setting himself free from many things. 1. You saw at one point people mocking him in the dance. He doesn't care. He's free from that hate. Jimin gets a lot of hate from other fandoms. 2. He flies away like a butterfly coming out of the cacoon as shown in the dance. He has grown and matured and so is free from his inner fears and demons. 3. There are words written on his body from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke in German which translated means I live my life like the growing ripples. So the song is all about Growth, maturity which sets him free from his inner fears and demons and mockery of his haters.
Free from his shadows ( insecurities, self doubts, hateful comments from other people) also free from the stereotypes, he used to try to present himself as tough, rougher version and he is finally free to be himself !!😇😇

For vocals I recomend promise, letter on the festa that is acoustic live and like crazy acoustic English version I think this one would blow your mind with his vocals:) enjoy!

I think that's why he uses such strong language in his lyrics. If you noticed, there was a poem written in German across his body by a German poet. The fact that he was motivated to do that is evidence of his intelligence & musical genius. BTS forever! 💜💜💜

Jimin is my favourite too, he is just so good in so many ways, draws attention to himself at the get go. As for this song, don't wanna be an expert on the lyrics, but for the choreo I will say that it is truly reflective of his talent as he studied contemporary dance in an art school...so it reflects in every performance one way or another. If you watch BTS choreos, you'll see a clear difference in every member's style and for me my attention is instantly diverted to Jimin as his moves are so elegant and reflective of his abilities, truly a treat to watch!

I see this song as Jimin setting himself free from his demons, his fears, his past self - an ode to move forward, a path to self-healing. I see this song as a declaration of rebirth. As others have said, this album really chronicles a lot of his struggles during the pandemic, and there might be other layers too, as even before the pandemic we've known a little about some of the struggles and suffering he's had for a long time. There are actually both choreography references and lyrical references to previous BTS songs and Jimin solo songs which is another added layer. I think this song just feels like freedom and self-acceptance. Jimin released this as a pre-release track 2 weeks before the whole album dropped, and while this song and video alone hit all of us so hard, hearing it in the context of the full album was even more emotional and brilliant. This is what BTS does with their music and lyrics - we're so proud of them while also so inspired ourselves. We appreciate his hardwork as a solo artist he went straight to Billboard hot 100 #1 without a collab, Radioplay push and barey company support. Set Me Free makes sense. Considered KING of KPOP, DANCE KING/God, Stage Commander etc. A very humble, sweet, supportive, selfless human being. If you watch "Guide to Bts" video u will love him more.
He had all the support he wanted from the company. When they do solo work they decide what they want to do and how they want to promote. It's part of artist development. They can ask for advice and help if they get a bit lost in it all. If you listen to the lads say themselves when they discuss their solo work and what they had to learn and do and who they went to for help you'll know this.

While he was given the minimum amount of promo that every artist is supposed to have from their label, he was denied a lot of things - such as, more than two music videos and a longer promotion period (that other members did get). Jimin himself said that he felt these were lacking. Also, Jimin's songs were never sent to the radio. You seriously think an artist would say 'No, I don't want my song to be sent to the radio'? Just because some members said they were happy with their promotions doesn't mean that you can generalize them all.

It's all a learning curve all of them talk about what they've learnt. One of those things for Jimin must have been 'Time Management'.

They squeezed his promotions on 9 days almost breaking his body on rehearsing, he even got sick, other members releasing during his promo time. So did JIMIN want all of this???? Bfr! Jimin is known as one of the dancers (dance line, vocal line) of the group. He has a past in contemporary dance, went to an arts highschool, then adapted to the k-pop dance style and learned to sing during his idol training. His strong dance background really shines in "Black Swan- BTS".

The thing is when it was released 5 months ago (already wow), everyone was shocked because we know him for years and he's very gentle/soft in his usual tone and attitude, and suddenly we heard him rapping/swearing and using his low voice, the contrast was huge and people needed time to believe that it was the real Jimin lol

It's a song about rebirth he sings about old me, new me (butterfly). There is no part one. This title is a nod to another BTS member Suga aka Agust D who has a song Set Me Free also about beginning anew and breaking free from hardships they've all faced and now having total control of the music they make going forward.

Jimin said he wrote this during Covid when he was first struggling with some things within himself, and then "Smeraldo Garden Marching Band" is when he has completely overcome his demons (if you will) and is more grounded now and not caring what other people think of him . . . (as you can see in that MV) . . .

I love how immediately you were drawn in and how despite being a music guy you felt the pull of the visuals too 😊 I think the best way to describe Jimin is that he's such a storyteller - he was actually a contemporary dancer in his teens before he joined BTS so everything he puts out he always makes sure it's beautifully cohesively from his vocal delivery to the music and production to the lyrics and the choreography and the visuals. Jimin's solo work is always plain art. This entire EP was about Jimin's journey through the pandemic. Set me free pt2 is about trying to escape the trap of his mind - the negative parts of it. The chaos in the choreography is supposed to represent the madness in his mind. And the vocal effects and auto tune to change his tone up were used to represent different parts of his mind arguing with each other - the "darker" side of his brain.
You have been hooked not only by Jimin, but by the crazy production of Set Me Free. I have to say many were pleasantly surprised at this new Jimin! The lyrics are the most super important part of who they are. Most songs are written by the rap line who are lyricists lol. So you are missing a lot if your only paying attention to the beats and instruments. Yes those are important but the soul is the lyrics and the music. It’s a package

In an interview with Jimin:
When the track list of the album was revealed, many noticed that the prerelease single was designated as “pt. 2” despite the fact that Jimin doesn’t have any existing song to his name titled “Set Me Free”. He confirmed that it’s a nod to a track on bandmate Suga’s second mixtape, D2. “There isn’t a connection, and we weren’t trying to divide one or two parts,” he explains. “But since it turns out my song talks about freedom and moving forward, and Suga’s song talks about some of the stories that come before, I thought it would be good to come after that.”
Personally, I loved this song except the auto-tune part when I first heard it but now, I love it. When BTS use auto-tune like in this, in a very distinct way, it usually has a deeper meaning. It connects to their album called Map of the Soul 7 album which is inspired by the Carl Jung Theory of Persona, Shadow, and Ego. Each of these (Persona, Shadow, Ego) are also solo BTS songs on the album that explain their perspective of what those mean in correlation too with the psychology theory. The shadow is something that we have a hard time with, trails, temptations, as well as things that if people knew about you would shame you or "cancel" you so to speak, etc. So, you will hear him "battling" the shadow/auto tune with his clear voice...If you listen to Shadow (the song by Suga), you will also understand better what I meant too...
For Set Me Free set:
Also, the 6 or 9 shape (depending on which way you flip it) that the dancers make and Jimin is dancing in the circle until he gets to the middle. That structure is called Fibonacci sequence. It has a lot of mathematical meaning that I honestly can't write very well about or understand super well, but it connects to the message of this song. I personally kind of interpret it as the line of the song that says, "fly away butterfly", because the 9 is last single number and where the numbers start all over again after, so with the lyrics he is "reborn" after the first round/way/1-9. He is reborn because at first, he is a caterpillar then eventually turns into a butterfly...

The panopticon is the very old concept (like 1700s) that was meant to create model prisoners. So, the idea was the prisoners would be visible 24/7 in this large structure. So, while Jimin's lyrics are, "set me free", he is standing in a literal prison. This concept is now applied thinking about surveillance states (CCTV) and social media. (For the nerds this is the work of Foucault and then a bunch of social media, comms, and HCI have picked this up.
The "tower" in the middle can actually be empty (self-policing by imagined guard). I could imagine two meanings as I think about it: 1. Jimin subverting the prison by being the guard (taking control) and/or 2. Jimin being his own guard as if he's being monitoring himself given his life experience and past policing from outsiders and talking control via the choreo and lyrics.
This also connects to the lyrics, "Going insane to stay sane" which are also similar lyrics to BTS song called On (which you reacted to) the lyrics are, "To remain sane, one must go insane”.

BTS also have a lot of different storylines that run throughout their music from personal stories to group stories, to their fictional storyline, each of their albums tell a story (sometimes it is a series different album like the Love Yourself albums), etc. I know it is a lot but take your time lol...BTS also has soo much content that even as a fan for like 2 years I have barely scratched the surface. I was hoping to catch up on their content when they announced they were taking a break (because of mandatory military service and also, they need to grow individually as well) to catch up but that isn't happening lol. There still is tons of content being released from all their solo endeavors.

To me the song lyrics talk about being free from expectations, being able to be oneself without fear of judgement. It is not about being free from the band. The members all stated repeatedly how they cannot wait to reunite as BTS in 2025 after military service. One thing you should know once you Jim-In you can't Jim-Out. he's now your bias. Congrats!

As for this song, don't wanna be an expert on the lyrics, but for the choreo I will say that it is truly reflective of his talent as he studied contemporary dance in an art school...so it reflects in every performance one way or another. If you watch BTS choreos, you'll see a clear difference in every member's style and for me my attention is instantly diverted to Jimin as his moves are so elegant and reflective of his abilities, truly a treat to watch!

I see this song as Jimin setting himself free from his demons, his fears, his past self - an ode to move forward, a path to self-healing. I see this song as a declaration of rebirth. As others have said, this album really chronicles a lot of his struggles during the pandemic, and there might be other layers too, as even before the pandemic we've known a little about some of the struggles and suffering he's had for a long time. There are actually both choreography references and lyrical references to previous BTS songs and Jimin solo songs which is another added layer. I think this song just feels like freedom and self-acceptance. Jimin released this as a pre-release track 2 weeks before the whole album dropped, and while this song and video alone hit all of us so hard, hearing it in the context of the full album was even more emotional and brilliant. This is what BTS does with their music and lyrics - we're so proud of them while also so inspired ourselves.

We appreciate his hardwork as a solo artist he went straight to Billboard hot 100 #1 without a collab, Radioplay push and barey company support. Set Me Free makes sense. Considered KING of KPOP, DANCE KING/God, Stage Commander etc. A very humble, sweet, supportive, selfless human being. If you watch "Guide to Bts" video u will love him more.
He had all the support he wanted from the company. When they do solo work they decide what they want to do and how they want to promote. It's part of artist development. They can ask for advice and help if they get a bit lost in it all. If you listen to the lads say themselves when they discuss their solo work and what they had to learn and do and who they went to for help you'll know this.

While he was given the minimum amount of promo that every artist is supposed to have from their label, he was denied a lot of things - such as, more than two music videos and a longer promotion period (that other members did get). Jimin himself said that he felt these were lacking. Also, Jimin's songs were never sent to the radio. You seriously think an artist would say 'No, I don't want my song to be sent to the radio'? Just because some members said they were happy with their promotions doesn't mean that you can generalize them all.

Jimin is known as one of the dancers (dance line, vocal line) of the group. He has a past in contemporary dance, went to an arts highschool, then adapted to the k-pop dance style and learned to sing during his idol training.
His strong dance background really shines in "Black Swan- BTS".

It's a song about rebirth he sings about old me, new me (butterfly). There is no part one. This title is a nod to another BTS member Suga aka Agust D who has a song Set Me Free also about beginning anew and breaking free from hardships they've all faced and now having total control of the music they make going forward.

Nathan you are ARMY now. I/we could see that as you got the "emotional" feeling watching this for the first time. Jimin is my favorite. His vocals & dancing skills are extraordinary. Along with this song being about his feelings during the pandemic, he also responds to his haters "F*ck all you Opps" in the beginning lyrics. I say good for him. Jimin said he wrote this during Covid when he was first struggling with some things within himself, and then "Smeraldo Garden Marching Band" is when he has completely overcome his demons (if you will) and is more grounded now and not caring what other people think of him . . . Jimin was/is a contemporary dancer as a young boy, by the time he was accepted into BTS he had studied many genres of dance. Jimin is truly an amazing artist, he is one of those who was cut from a different cloth.

Set Me Free at first is song by SUGA (BTS Rapper).Jimin's version is a nod to SUGA masterpiece. Its good you found out Set Me Free pt 2 since Jimin's solo debut did not take a long time. Only 9 days. This one (STF pt 2)is my personal favourite. I love how immediately you were drawn in and how despite being a music guy you felt the pull of the visuals too 😊 I think the best way to describe Jimin is that he's such a storyteller - he was actually a contemporary dancer in his teens before he joined BTS so everything he puts out he always makes sure it's beautifully cohesively from his vocal delivery to the music and production to the lyrics and the choreography and the visuals. Jimin's solo work is always plain art.
This entire EP was about Jimin's journey through the pandemic. Set me free pt2 is about trying to escape the trap of his mind - the negative parts of it. The chaos in the choreography is supposed to represent the madness in his mind. And the vocal effects and auto tune to change his tone up were used to represent different parts of his mind arguing with each other - the "darker" side of his brain.
You have been hooked not only by Jimin, but by the crazy production of Set Me Free. I have to say many were pleasantly surprised at this new Jimin! I see many others answered most of your questions, so wont duplicate! But Jimin is one of the sweetest souls. Humble and kind but can adapt into whatever he is feeling. They are so good and talented and it is an absolute tragedy that our “ in$ustry” can’t give them their due credit. I will say, that I am extremely sorry you found them just a little too late. Their concerts in LA and Las Vegas were ridiculously amazing. I had the opportunity to see Suga in Chicago and it was the best night of my life.
