How to Adopt a Second Cat without a Fight

- This video looks at how you can bring a second cat into your house while avoiding a confrontation between your cats. This process of introducing cats has several steps. Each step helps the cats become aware of and familiar with the other cat without triggering a face-off confrontation, which can lead to aggression, fighting and general tension.
Many new cat owners don't know these steps and will make the mistake of putting cats together without an introduction period. This can be a serious mistake and can lead to months or years of animosity between your cats.

I wish in just one of the videos online about this, someone would give advice about what to do when the first cat is clearly aware of the other cat (or kitten) if you’re able to keep them separated because the new cat is very LOUD and meows constantly.
I think the cats will become aware of each other very quickly whether or not one of them is loud. The real issue is how long to wait before you let them see each other, and that will depend on how they interact under the door. In general I think you can crack the door open within a couple of days. But get some help so that a person is on each side of the door with each cat and can intervene if they start to act aggressively. Some hissing is normal, but if they growl or give that low pitched whine, close the door and try again a little later.

I will definitely try a kitten and see how that goes. Plus with my small apartment, I can get a pet "playpen" for the living room so my cat can see her and have personal space. So glad UA-cam recommended your channel.
Maria, I tried a kitten with my older cat and even though I had done my homework, it still took 1.5yrs for my cat to accept the kitten.
I never left them alone and eventually they started playing and sleeping together. It was very stressful so good luck!
@@ET-fk8ty You didn't go on vacation for 1.5 yrs until they got along? Did you have a pet sitter sleep overnight so they weren't alone? I have 2 rooms in my apartment. Separated by one door, there is no way I can keep them separate for long. I think I will not get a kitten lol
@@Icewing10 I set up the kitten in the spare room so he didn't mind. Meal times and play time were done in the family room with supervision. When hissing, growling and fighting started I would place the kitten back in his room for his safety. Apart from work, shopping and a few day trips, I mainly stayed at home to help them adjust. It was worth all the hard work at the end.
My friend's cats got along from day one! So all cats are different.

But what if it’s already too late? How do I fix my bad intro mistakes? I’ve had my new cat for three weeks now. But the older one hisses at the new one constantly. :(
First, if they are not fighting, just hissing, try not to stress about it too much. Many cats hiss at new ones even after a full introduction. It will just take time, sometimes many months. What you want to avoid at this stage is actual aggression. It there any attacking, chasing, howling, swat fights? If they are doing that, interrupt the activity by distracting them. You can also do some of the introduction tactics. Give them treats when they get along. Stop the treats if they start hissing. Play with them together, as long as it does not trigger a confrontation. They might not be best friends, even with time. But even if they just tolerate each other, I think that it is mentally healthier for them to have the company, especially if you are away at work all day. A few months of stress are better than years of loneliness. If they are attacking each other, then you might need to do a re-introduction. Keep them apart for a few weeks. (I suggest asking family or a friend to host the new one for this period of time.) And then re-introduce them, with the right procedure. It still might not work, but it will give them a better shot at being friends.

My older cat hisses and pounds her paw on the ground. But she’s never tried to hurt the little one. And the little one submits right away by exposes her belly and cowers to the older one.

Mr Muffin is almost identical to one we rescued as a kitten. What breed of cat is he please?
Mr. Muffin is a mix of domestic shorthair and probably a cold weather cat like a Norwegian forest cat, Maine Coon cat or Siberian cat. He has ruffs of fur around the neck, tufted lynx-like ears and furry feet with long hairs between his toes for cold weather. He is mostly gray, but has some Tabby markings, including the M on the forehead and subtle stripes. Unfortunately, I can't say much more as he was born to strays under a shed in the neighborhood and came crawling out when abandoned at about four weeks old.
