Speaker Biography:
Dr. Anu Rebbapragada currently serves as the Director and Senior Advisor for Diagnostic Strategy & Services at Microbix Biosystems Inc. specializing in quality assurance solutions for infectious disease diagnostic testing. She is a Certified Clinical Microbiologist by the American Board of Medical Microbiology and Fellow of the Canadian College of Microbiology. Her 15 year professional experience spans diagnostic medicine in public and private laboratory sectors, medical device industry, academic and field-based research in Kenya for a Gates foundation funded project. Her professional experience includes, Senior Scientist at Public Health Ontario, Lab Director overseeing the full portfolio of microbiology testing for a network of 4 high volume private laboratories in Canada, National Director of Scientific Affairs & Market Access for a medical device company and, VP Diagnostic Services for COVID-19 testing across a network of clinics and labs. She has also served on various scientific committees, including Chair of Virology / Molecular Proficiency Testing at the Institute of Quality Management in Healthcare and, the Lab Developed Testing Guideline committee for the Canadian Standards Association. Her research on Sexually Transmitted Infections and diagnostic assays have generated several publications, grant funding and awards. Notable recognitions include, the Raymond Sarber Award from the American Society of Microbiology for her discovery of a novel bacterial energy receptor, Innovation Award for HPV vaccine effectiveness surveillance and evaluation of self-collection, Lead of the Biorepository at Public Health Ontario, NSERC award for developing a proof-of-concept nanotechnology device to perform multiplex molecular diagnostic testing and Quality Improvement Awards for being the first lab in Canada to launch molecular Trichomonas testing and provide digitized infection control reports to long term care facilities.

There has been an evolution of organized HPV screening programs from the pap smear to liquid-based cytology, which has brought dramatic reductions in cervical cancer incidence. However, there are still inconsistencies in testing methods and low screening rates across Canada due to COVID-19. This lecture will review the evolution of cervical cancer screening, the current Canadian landscape, and potential strategies for the current and evolving challenges with HPV testing.
