I really like your realistic approach of interchanging your camping kit. It should be evolving depending on what you're situation calls for.

Love sitting in on your classes. Very informative and enjoyable. I haven't hit the woods in 20 years but I feel the need to get back to them. Keep the vids coming, I'm slowly catching up.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Blackie, I always wondered what the heck a knapsack was, thought it was just another word for rucksack. Great advice, thank you. I never had a Bahco Laplander saw, don't know how much they weigh? I have 2 Silky saws, they weigh next to nothing and are amazing. You might be able to cut some weight there with a Silky.

One thing I've found useful has been a small sack of "hardware", just little things like eyehooks and nails. I've found that a 2 inch eyehook will go into and out of a pinetree with little effort, and provides a real convenient hang point for ridgelines, lanterns, etc. Nails have more uses than I can count. They're easy to take down, or inconspicuous to leave up at a favorite campsite or basecamp that you intend to use often.

In some ways I envy you folks back east. Here in the desert, there aren't many trees, so a hammock is not an option. That means I need a sleeping mat/pad. Nor is there any water, so you're looking at having to bring 2 gallons of water on a 2 day hike. And in the winter the low can be easily in the high 20's/low 30's, so I need my large 20 degree bag for at night and a place to put my winter jacket during the day because the high can be in the low 70's.
I say all that to say that I have to bring a full size backpack for even a simple overnighter.

i spent time out in that country and your right the nights are frigid and the days will melt you....i am a woodsman..i thrive in the deep woods..but i have respect for the desert rats..and the polar bears of the far north..you are masters of your lands..

I have a couple of hammocks, the Eno doublenest fist very well and packs small. the way it works it will cover you as a bug net. I also carry the gorilla tarp or sro arcturus tarp.

Could you make this into a light rucksack with a pistol belt and a h harness, you could clip the knapsack by the rings to the rings on the back of the harness

very true..for a long time i wore alice lbe..and would carry a butt pack up high and one down on the belt with a woobie rolled tight between them....lots of ways to carry in the field

Things I know that would work very well in this kit:
    1- Poncho-hamock from Wilderness Innovation
2- VELAR UL BIVVY from 2gosystems

I’m curious to know how you combat the skeeters down there while sleeping in the hammock. I know those little devils will bite plumb through most hammock material here.

the eno type hammock is large enough i put something in the attached pocket and then pull that side of the hammock over me to kinda enclose me in the hammock..that and lots of smoke on the fire to drive them off

I prefer the drybag style of knapsack or expedition style bag that a lot of tv explorers are using. The one I have is identical to the river monster guys (later seasons) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E1FSA7U/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Other than that I pretty much agree with what you have tho my fire bag is a lot smaller, just carry some frestarters mainly like esbit cubes, don't need anything elaborate.
