To be fair FNAF 3 seemed to be the least scary of the main games (IMO anyways) so I guess this kinda caught him off guard

If you listen to the audio on the first night, he says they've gotten a new lead they're gonna follow up on a guy that used to work at the pizzeria that had found an old suit in a boarded up room no one knew about. By the time you get back on the second night, they had followed the lead, bought Springtrap, and dropped him off at Fazbear's Fright before chasing another lead, leaving you to deal with the murderous little freak for the first time on the second night.
