Another little jaunt along the Grand Union canal in the narrowboat saw me departing from Weedon after a pleasant couple of days, and heading towards Gayton Junction.
On the way, I stopped to refill the water tank and met a lot of boats coming north from Stoke Bruerne after a big event that's held there every year. I end this vlog about a mile before Gayton so as to stop in the countryside.

6:31 ha ha you can absolutely see that he has that “I don’t have my glasses on” face.
With just a second or two of the “who the flip is that burke” face.
But the genuinely joyful smile on his face, once he recognised you was just brilliant.

one of your better navigation videos,,,windy day,,,lots of colorful boats,,,tight squeezes at times,,,im surprised you managed it as well as you did. Lotsa options to bump against other boats, the canal sides, and docking areas!! You always make it look easier than it is! I saw many different types of boats, and creative paint options,,,,yours always looks the neatest of all. Thanks for working so hard for all of us who will never have the chance to do as you do....regards,

We’ve stayed on that caravan site 7:48 many a time and enjoyed watching the boats chug past. That winding hole is actually quite shallow, we’ve seen a few boats try to use it but bump their hull and move on elsewhere

I agree with your comments about the noise from the trains! One of my abiding memories of my Christmas on the K&A was the trains. The west of England line runs adjacent to the cut all the way from Bath to Reading, so one is never more than a few hundred yards from it. I was lucky enough however, to see "Tornado" as she steamed along, looking magnificent in her cream and royal blue livery. I was able to forgive the noise intrusion after seeing that! xx

I must say, the landscape views from the canals are just as I remember England from before, stunning.
The landscapes I see now are mostly rice paddies.
    Quite different.
A thing I might remark on, maybe, that many boaters seem to be fond of "parking" in bendy spots, restricting the traffic flow.
I would park my boat there where I do not restrict maneuvering room.
But, please, vlog on, I love it.

I do love David's blogs but I have to admit this is the first time I've noticed the in-camera narration (as I work my way through the back catalog) and it's not quite the same. There's something about the retrospective light-hearted snark that I really enjoy. Perhaps I will grow to like this new (to me) format but I'm not sure -- I'm not even sure I can put my finger on why I'm not in favor of it (other than my clunky guess above). [And yes, obviously this would be a huge time-saver so I can't be mad at our narrowboat bloke for his pragmatism]

Hi David! So interesting. At the same time that you filmed this, we were 'accidentally' staying at 'The Narrowboat' at Weedon and then remembered we had friends on the GU whom we hadn't seen for fifteen years. We got in touch and they were moored at Nether Heyford. After a great couple of days with them we ended up, a few weeks later, purchasing a Narrowboat they owned on the same mooring. It seems, we worked out, to be exactly the same time you were passing by. Crazy coincidence!
We have been loving binge-watching your vlogs together before bedtime! Look out for an old green Norseman 40' called 'Zion' next year!

On the hose bib, the nut just below the handle is a packing gland. Just a small turn should stop the leak if there is any packing left in the gland. The screw you were trying to turn just holds the handle on the shaft. It works like the packing on your prop shaft but without the grease.

One of the amazing things I have noticed is many of the sections of canal you have been filming have been elevated, the normal thought when it comes to canals from the uninitiated is we expect them to be holes in the ground so to speak. The marvel of the English Canals is they did not limit their thinking to that concept and several Engineering marvels have been the unexpected. Canals which are ViaDucts. This is not just a marvel but has to be a bit scary on some of them especially when you thing when these marvels were built. We have a bridge here in Edmonton built of the save vintage of steel as the Titanic, any repairs on this bridge are an Engineering study and the Civil Engineering firms also employ the Engineering students at the local University as a practicum. I am sure the River Trust does the same to ensure the lessons learned on the Canals are not forgotten for the same reason. Cheers and again a very enjoyable and interesting Tour via your Blog

So great to have you posting cruising vlogs again, David. Cheers!
If you ever have a mind to do a bit of DIY at the watering points, that leaking tap can be improved a bunch by tightening the nut just below the handle. The plunger shaft has packing around it (similar to your boat's stern gland). Just tighten it a bit with an adjustable wrench and you'll have improved the canal infrastructure.

Not sure if you've been told yet, but the area at the bottom of the camp site at Stow was not a winding hole. The winding hole there Is just after the bridge next to the camp site.
The area you pointed out at the bottom of the camp site is full of sludge and i have seen a few boats get stuck in the mire there.

Great video of our current home turf as our share boat is based at Gayton. Took me a bit to stop screaming at the beginning of the video as you showed the scene of my unfortunate accident when I broke my ankle at the beginning of May. It was fun getting up the slope next to the bridge in Weedon as I had to do it on my bottom. Thankfully I am all mended now and looking forward to our next outing at the end of October.

Hi David, Just my pet peeve but I think we should put this turning with the wind to bed. Just from a logical point of view it makes no sense. You could only turn on windy days and then only if the wind was in the right direction? What are the chances? I prefer winding as in windlass which seems distantly related to the German wenden meaning to turn round. Wikipedia has the following to say on the matter: "Another Etymology, however, is the Old English word for turn - "Windan", (pronounced with a short I (as in windlass, a handle for winding (long I) gears))[2]. Old English was in use up to and including the 18th century when the canals where built. Much UK canal terminology comes from spoken rather than written tradition and from bargees who did not read or write." Which I find much more persuasive than the wind theory. Keep up the good work. I love the atmosphere in these Autumn cruises :)

While watching you motor past some of these marinas and other groups of boats, I can't help wonder if there is a little "length snobbery" among narrow boat owners. Do the 60+ foot owners look down on the 45' owners for example?

    Random thought No.27 -
I’ve often pondered as to why using coal as a fuel for domestic heating, never really took hold here in Australia.
I mean, obviously our climate is milder, but during winter, and in certain areas people have wood burning stoves and/or fireplaces etc.
I’ve personally lived in a house in the south west of Western Australia, and I had 2 fires going all day at certain times of the year.
One was a smaller Squirrel stove which I absolutely loved and the other was a larger slow combustion stove that could also heat up the hot water as well as be used for baking and cooking.
I along with everyone else in the area, as well as anywhere I’ve lived or been with a fireplace/stove exclusively used wood.
Coal wasn’t even offered as an option. I wonder why that is. 🤔
Although, now that I think about this, I have seen a kind of charcoal product available mainly in summer, for using with barbecues.
Here endeth my random thought sparked by seeing the smoke coming out of the little boat chimney, and Mr Johns exclaiming that it’s smell was glorious.
I too enjoy the smell of wood fires on cold winter evenings.
I’m only guessing that a coal burning fire would not smell so nice - although, to my shame, as a coal miners daughter, I have little to no experience of what that would actually smell like.
    🙂🐿🌈❤️

Summertime narrowboat cruising... nice. Whats the temperature situation for narrowboats in the summer? How well does the water cooling do against the sun heating up the boat? Cloudy/murky water absorbs more heat, as does shallow water, so I wonder what the canal temp is in a sunny stretch of countryside.
If it was me, I would put a couple more solar panels on the roof, if not just to provide shade for that part of the boat

Hello David, You had mentioned the winding holes for turning around. Having just spent a week on a 45 ft sailboat which had bow thrusters, I was wondering if any posh narrowboats are equipped with such to aid in turning and maneuvering?

Yes lots of more modern boats have them although they're not strictly needed, just a helping hand occasionally.

You shouldn't spend any time on the locks other than the time spent transiting the lock. For all canalside moorings, the CRT have towpath rangers who note overstaying boats.

Hungry birds usually are plus those were looking after their cygnets!. One question I have off bird topic is how safe do you feel just mooring up in some of these quiet places? Are there many problem area's or are they known places and tend to be avoided?

hear hear! Having grown up in Stratford watching them attack any Duck that looks in their direction and multiply to take over the river I've never liked them, but your the first person who's agreed with me!

@@CruisingTheCut, you could perhaps feed them your excess rice pudding; it must be causing ballasting problems by now.

Mostly safe. Depends, you tend to look and see what you think. There are parts of London that are known for itrouble for example and some bits of other canals that people warn each other about. But it's a bit random, just as break-ins of houses are.

David: are you keeping the name of your boat out of the vid deliberately? I was reminded by seeing the boat with the No3 on the side and knowing that yours has No1 but I don't recall ever seeing the entire name of your boat on one of your vlogs

Greeting from Ont Canada where we wish we had a canal system like yours.
As you were passing a large blue boat you said he was on the off? Side and was very rare. It was a 14 day stay over. What did u mean by that?

Hope you don't mind an unrelated question... Saw your vlog where you blacked the boat yourself using Intertuff 16. We are considering having ours blacked with the same product - how is yours holding up? Would you recommend it? Many thanks - enjoyed your vlog as you went passed our marina at Heyford Fields 🍷🍷

      @CruisingTheCut  6 років тому

Hi. Hard to tell, unfortunately, until I next get the boat out again and have a look! I believe Intertuff is widely used. My concern was that each coat should have the full drying time but what a lot of marinas and wharfs do is slap it on as quickly as possible and you're back in the water the next day (almost!) which may render it less good. I did one coat a day plus another day for final drying.

Railways were deliberately built alongside canals to steal their trade. Many railway companies bought up canals and neglected them.

Here in the Northeast US a lot of canal companies got into the railroad business and used the properties they owned along the canal to build the rail line. And promptly neglected the canals.

Do you need to add any sort of sanitizer to the water tank periodically to kill bacteria?

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  4 роки тому +5

I probably should but I don't. On the other hand, I only drink from the tank after it's been boiled and I keep a separate 5L jug for drinking as well.

Did you ever have to drain your water tank, and give it a good scrubbing?

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  Рік тому

Once. Not a scrubbing though, I couldn't physically get into it but I dropped chemical cleaner tablets in.
