My neighbour still has one from 1981 and has not broken down or stopped working at all. He still uses it everyday

I am glad to see that someone on UA-cam is not trashing an old microwave. I've seen some videos of people doing microwave experiments with old microwaves and eventually destroying the microwave. If it still works, why not use it the way it was intended to be used instead of ruining it? Eventually they will become antiques and people will collect these old microwaves.

Sears manufacturer code 564W means Sanyo. The high-pitched beep also gives it away as being made by Sanyo.

I have a 1985 non-convection descendant of this, model 565.8778610, same cabinet except for the panel (design is similar, just some different options), and it does have a clock. 1300w. I bought it new and it still works perfectly. My friends keep urging me to get a modern one, but I don't see the point of replacing something that has worked perfectly, and does everything I need, for 31 years for something that will last 8 years if I'm lucky.

Hi Debbie, I also have a 1985 Kenmore one, model no. 565.8768610. Today it just stopped working. I was told there was a pop sound after it started heating for about 30 secs. Afterwards, nothing was functional. The display panel went dark and is unresponsive. I was wondering if you or anyone knew what it might be. This thing has lasted many years. I'd like to repair it if it's relatively simple and the parts are available. Thanks.

kind of a shame this was about to be thrown away! looks much more durable than cheapy modern ones.

Never start the microwave while there's nothing inside the oven, this will damage your microwave oven.
anyway this '83 model is quite interesting.

The only old microwave that you can run empty is a Litton. Anything else and you can potentially short out the magnetron.

I just was given one of these. It is a restoration project I plan on fixing up to sell and learn a little more about microwaves while I do. I have already restored a tappan500, so figured why not try a vintage digital controle unit. It works but needs some cleaning and possibly a touch up inside. The simple fact it actually works and outlasts most cheapy microwaves out there today tells me it might be worth selling and I might get good money for the thing if I get it looking nice. It even came with the booklets and a cookbook. Mine is a little different than yours though. Mine has a turntable. Let me tell you though, I haven't weighed it yet but it must be at least 80lb.

    • @AutistiVision
      @AutistiVision  4 роки тому +1

Oh, you might want to consider keeping this gem of a microwave. They truly don't make them like this anymore. I made this video a couple years ago but it still completely works like brand new. Ha, yes, mine weighs a ton too! :)

@@AutistiVision cool! Who knows I might keep it as a backup. Either way its going to be a fun project and one worth restoring. It even has a dedicated trap door on the side side to replace the lamp! Truely something you never see today. Maybe on expensive over-the-range units or fancy sheff/commercial units but surely never on a low-end consumer unit.

Indeed! Mine is still working perfectly as well. You know what one of the best things about it is? The handle. You squeeze to unlatch for quiet opening and closing. You can't get this on a microwave today. They all have to go "clunk!" now.

  • @kittyfanatic1980

@autistivision: because its a microwave not a conventional oven. in mic. mode the microwaves require something to penetrate. ie: glass of water. the mic. will overheat rapidly and the bare minimum that will happen is destruction of the magnetron. they are not designed to be ran empty. alot of microwave techs will tell you of experiences like microwaves blowing up or catching fire due to being ran empty. im not sure how microwaves in particular work and why but it is similar to shorting out a car battery. if you put metal in a microwave youll know it(also HIGHLY dangerous) the wife was stupid once and in a matter of 10 seconds the magnetron was shorted to half strength(took twice as long to heat up) and she got screamed at.
just be extremely careful. and make certain you run mics. with something inside that is non-flammable liquid. a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer on a winter day is a prime candidate before adding to vehicles oil:)

I've got a Kenmore Microwave 564.8898510 from December 1984 sitting in my attic. It started taking a lot longer to cook food so we got a new one. After reading your post I suspect the magnetron needed to be replaced. Pretty cool.

We have the 1984 version. Family member just bought us a new one because we inherited this old one with the house. Didn't know how old it was until now. still works great, but I don't have any use for this anymore. Do people buy old heavy microwaves anymore?

    • @AutistiVision

my 1984 kenmore straight mic. has a vent like that but its a plastic deflector to direct the air to the top.
try not to ruin it??? you are ruining it running it empty. VERY DANGEROUS!!!! use a glass of water to test.

@@AutistiVision there needs to be something, like water, inside the cavity to absorb the radiation or else it can pool and potentially backtrack into the magnatron and overheat it or cause damage.

I just went on a quick search journey which was fun actually and, basically, no. There are a few parts here and there available by a number of different sites, but the idea of getting a whole new top portion or something from a place like Sears or eReplacementparts isn't going to happen. Actually this is making me realize that it's an absolute miracle that mine is fully functional. I wish you luck. I hope you may find one on the curb like I did. :)
