@jennyhong first off, congrats! We have a 5 year old shitzu and we just got his nephew, at 8 weeks old 2 days ago. So thanks for your video! This is a random, but where did you get the black thin stand in your entry way? Near the front door, next to your stores? I checked your Amazon store but didn’t see it and omg I’ve been looking for a really thin stand for our bedroom. I hope you are able to share. Thanks so much!!!
The moment with Beast and your mom was so precious. 🥹 Thanks for sharing your first week with a puppy as I always wanted to get one of my own. I’m hoping some day. ☺️
My wife and I will be getting 2 six week old Shih Tzu puppies (brother and sister) in a little over a week. We also had a Shih Tzu before who lived for 12 years and had to put her down due to illness so we can seriously relate to your whole situation with your old Shih Tzu and now getting a new puppy/puppies. We are so excited and can’t wait to get our bundles of joy. Shih Tzu’s are the BEST!
Highly recommend taking Beast to puppy play dates and puppy kindergarten to set him up for success! I don’t recommend District Dogs tho lol our pup is an amazing dog (except for his barking) so we wished we socialized him sooner and more. I heard even just carrying puppies outside in a bag helps them get socialized and be less fearless! Since he loves his crate (thanks to your amazing routine), I recommend turning the tv on while he’s napping in the crate, it helps puppies get desensitized to loud sounds and distractions esp for apartment living it’s so helpful). But overall you guys are doing such an amazing job, it reminded me of me and my husband and we got our first puppy. Accidents happen so it’s totally ok! What helped with us is basically removing all the rugs for the meantime lol and then giving treat right after our puppy went potty outside! We also taught our puppy to ring the doggie doorbell, works so well, you may want to try in a couple weeks 😊 try to use his kibble as his treat instead of treat to avoid diarrhea😃
Omg thank you for these recommendations, the TV during nap time is so smart. And I saw some videos about just putting him in a bag and walking around the city 😍 thank you so so so much
The amount of cute aggression I feel 2 seconds into the preview 😡🥹😱How can you live with something that cute 24/7?! I’d implode. You’re doing such a great job with him! Also, I love that he actually looks like Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Will he be doing group puppy classes? It’s so good for teaching them to function and build that relationship with distractions.
Really appreciate the great documentation and tips you shared in this video. Coupled with an absolutely adorable puppy (Beast!) and your real life experiences in his first week this is AWESOME content!!
oh my goodness this is so adorable 😭💕💕💕 Beast’s little puppy tail thanks for sharing the first week with your puppy,,, Thomas is in love as a new puppy dad 🥹❣️ jenna’s mom is smitten,, so precious i love him
We took potty breaks first thing every morning, after every nap, after every play session because of the excitment, 15 min after every meal, and right before bedtime. Potty training definitely takes A LOT OF PATIENCE.
Absolutely LOVE the New Puppy Podcast! So easy to listen to, great advice, and all easy to follow. I just got a new puppy (4-month old German Shepherd/Akita mix named Jinx) almost a month ago and it's been helping with her a ton.
When I got my beagle puppy I started off with puppy pads to potty train him just so that he doesn't have accidents in the house because puppy's bladders are so small they are unable to hold their pee .. now we take him outside so he knows now he can't pee or poop in the house.. its a lot of work but worth it :) congrats on your puppy he's super cute !
I recommend making a schedule that you stick to. My pup trained so fast by taking her out every 2 hours on the dot. I didnt use potty pads or anything like that because I didnt want her to be confused and think it was okay to ever potty inside. Also, they are unable to hold their bladder when they are young. Bladder control doesnt really happen until like 16 weeks. Also, all dogs are different- but when my pup cried in the crate it was her letting me know she had to go out. You are doing wonderful! You will learn what works best for you! Beast is sooo adorable. He looks like a little teddy bear.
I couldn’t find a collar to fit my 10 week old Shih Tzu her neck was so small. I also heard they should just be in a harness as collars squeeze their trachea. I have settled for a cat collar..
I didn’t notice any pee pads in your apartment. It’s a good idea to encourage them to go potty on the pad if they can’t get outside immediately. Good luck. It’s a lot of work..
@JennaHong first off, congrats! We have a 5 year old shitzu and we just got his nephew, at 8 weeks old 2 days ago. So thanks for your video! Make SURE you play with his paws A LOT! You will clip his nails more often than any of the other things you mentioned getting him used to. I am a Senior on my EIGHTH Shih Tzu, every single one amazingly well behaved, and I have learned that the only “expert” on what a pup needs is the pup. Do what works with your particular dog regardless of what the dog experts say or do. Your #1 priority is making sure he learns that his new world as a safe and happy space. By ignoring his crying you are teaching him that he can’t count on you guys to protect him. None of my dogs have been whiners and every one knew had no problem seeing me as the alpha in the relationship and I have never left them alone to cry it out. There is always a reason why little guys like Beast are crying - often because they are scared or lonely. He has been used to sleeping with litter mates for warmth and companionship and all of a sudden he finds himself all alone with two strangers who are not even in the same room? I have never believed in tough love parenting. My guys sleep with me their first week ( in a carrier for safety, but open enough that they can work their way out if they choose. 6 month old Benji was having none of it. He wormed his way out but slept with his head in the carrier and his body next to me LOL.) I cover the bottom half of the bed with peepee pads covered with layers of towels because I expect accidents on the first night or so. NONE of my Shih Tzus have let out so much as a whimper, even on their first night BTW and they were easier to train than the so-called norm. I have always believed it was because I didn’t have to re-earn their trust every morning after isolating them again every night. My dogs have their safe spaces in every room (carriers, doggie beds, etc.) but I have never crate trained a single one. If you are committed to the crate, any reason why it can’t be with you in the bedroom? A Shih Tzu Beast’s age and size needs to pee every 2 hours. He can’t hold it much beyond that if he is drinking enough water. My young puppies have always been peepee pad trained first, even though I make sure that peeing outside is more fun and more exciting. After a month or two they only used the pad at night (and while I get to sleep thru the night) and/or when I had to leave them alone for longer than they could hold it. I make a BIG deal of any wet spots on the pad and an even bigger deal if they could wait until I woke up or returned home. Most of the time I took them with me, almost always once I retired. I just wanted to offer another informed point of view. I was fortunate that my first Shih Tzu’s breeder set me on the right path when I was in grad school. Shih Tzus are genetically primed to please and get stubborn only when you try to force them. Don’t reinforce what you don’t want and praise to the heavens the nano-second he does what you want. A gentle no-no with a redirect and a happy GOOD BOY when he does what you are trying to teach him. Consistency is key so you don’t confuse him. Especially with baby dogs who are trying to learn the way of your world. Enjoy your cute baby and keep posting.
we decided no pee pads anywhere because some research we saw that we agreed with was pee pads make it seem "okay" for dogs to pee inside and makes the training period longer, so for the first month we would basically take him out anywhere between every 30 min besides naps
I’m not only posting puppy content. My last video was work to live diaries and it’s only my second video and his first week which I think is completely valid to document. But also, this is my life right now and my content is whatever is going on in my life :)
thank you for being patient with me this week 💖 enjoy this first week with my baby Beast!
❤

I’m so glad they worked for you 🥹 we’re trying to go without pads at all for now

🥹💕
What make you wake up every day with such power 💪⚡? Lovely sis...!!
🤪🤪🤪

we use a harness for walking and a collar for when we're not walking! and the collar is usually off at home :)
I couldn’t find a harness small enough either 😟
Ahhh Beast is so cute I think my heart is going to explode lol! Happy to see he’s settling in well so far 🥰
he's so FREAKIN CUTEE
My dogs love Blue Buffalo treats and food. It’s pricey but worth it
yum 😍
Do you have a Chewy Code?
no unfortunately :) but my links are affiliate
I also heard that dogs nibbling on grass is due to a lack of nutrition. When I changed my dogs food she stopped nibbling
definitely possible, i think grass is also just still new to him!
Is Beast pad trained as well?
We chose not to pad train him
😍
⭐️ thank you for watching
🐶 ❤
😭💖
Love beast I have a baby shih tzu
Okay shih tzu twins 💖
Omg u replied hope you and beast and ur roommate or boyfriend the best ❤❤
I didn’t notice any pee pads in your apartment. It’s a good idea to encourage them to go potty on the pad if they can’t get outside immediately. Good luck. It’s a lot of work..
This video was around a year ago! It took probably 1-2 months to fully potty train him and we didn’t use pee pads!
WhAT FOOD U HAVE HIM ON IM GETTING THE SAME PUPPY❤
i would ask your vet to be sure, but our recommended purina pro plan puppy!
@JennaHong first off, congrats! We have a 5 year old shitzu and we just got his nephew, at 8 weeks old 2 days ago. So thanks for your video!

Hi Kierra! I think we connected on IG but it's from Ikea

thank you so much for these tips! my pup is 1 year old now and he's perfect🥹
May we ask why don’t you have a pee pad somewhere in your condo, for accidents? Even if the majority of the time you bring him out?
we decided no pee pads anywhere because some research we saw that we agreed with was pee pads make it seem "okay" for dogs to pee inside and makes the training period longer, so for the first month we would basically take him out anywhere between every 30 min besides naps
If they go in circles they are going to go potty. Watch for those signs 😊
so so true, and the sniffing for sure!!
Play with his feet. Trust me... I had a wonderful Pit Bull name Hanna and if I tried to cut her nail she would cry like I was killing her.
Yes alll the time!
This! Get him used to clipping nails or a dremmel young
OKAY so lets not only post puppy content now
I’m not only posting puppy content. My last video was work to live diaries and it’s only my second video and his first week which I think is completely valid to document. But also, this is my life right now and my content is whatever is going on in my life :)
Then follow someone else because the rest of us are smitten with Beast
