It's because Simon went with an unregulated driver and also the firmware was changed so these aren't dangerous like they used to be. The 4X18 and 3X21 models pre-3X21C could exceed 100°C without a fan, this is also why they sustained such a high output because they weren't coded to drop below 35%-40%.
Thank you sir for the in depth review. I'm not really a flashlight guy or knowledgeable on these products. I have a issue where I really need something with some "throw" to light up 2 legged critters I'm having issues with on property out to 500+ ft. Would only need short duration as they tend to "scatter" once lights are shown on them. Stumbled across this convoy model and this video has helped me determine this is perfect for my needs. Thanks again.
I got mine in the mail yesterday and I immediately love it, it balance great in the hand, for the size it feels actually light, and the throw is awesome
I just picked up an L7, M21G & the L8 L7&L8 in SBT90.2 & M21G in XHP70.3 I had no clue that this beast was out there. Had I been aware, I wouldnt hesitate to place the order at that time. Regardless, this one is going to have to become a part of the collection. I love the SBT90.2 it is an awesome emitter, excellent video, good job. Cheers 🍺🍻🍺, DC
No way, awesome, I am going to look into that. I just picked up a few S21B's about three weeks ago but had no clue that they give sbt90.2 as an option. Thanks for the tip. Cheers 🍺🍻🍺, DC
22:45 - If you want an SBT90.2 based searchlight that can hold its output with good regulation, you need to look to the duty use lights like the Amutorch DM90, Acebeam K75, Lumintop BLF GT90 or Astrolux MF05 that sport excellent buck or buck/boost drivers. On FET, it's just a fun toy.
Thank you my friend I appreciate your comment 🙏 Yes them are beast, I was going to pick up the blf gt90 a while back but never did, that thing looks massive lol
@@smotheredchrome The GT90 is at the brink of what I'd be wanting to carry, even with a shoulder strap. For a duty use light I'd use for S/R purposes. I would only put up with it because of the double battery pack configuration and extended runtime... If you can't get the BLF anymore, you should grab the K75. At turn-on, the K75 is actually brighter than the GT90, and it's light enough that I've hand carried it on 10-12 mile round trip trails with just the handle.
This is essentially the same light as the wildtrail wt90 and that is a $250 flashlight, awesome deal from convoy. All that’s left now for Simon is to make a multi sbt90 flashlight, either 3 or 4 sbt90 emitters and 110-120mm reflector, if he can do that for $250-$300 I’m sure they would sell pretty good.
@@Next96300 If the price was under $150 I could see the wt90 being worth it for the reasons you mentioned but I don’t use onboard chargers so I definitely couldn’t justify the $250 price tag for perhaps a better driver. The sbt90 isn’t going to get much brighter than it is in the 3x21d and Simon always makes his drivers available for purchase, even the specialty ones so you’ll easily be able to get a replacement if you actually need one. I wouldn’t knock anyone for still choosing the wt90 but there’s no denying the killer value of the 3x21d and I will for sure be picking one up at some point.
Haha. I wouldn’t be surprised. Sbt90.2 is the led of the future as of now. It only makes sense. I never thought I’d get a l21b w/sbt90(I was going to try the mod myself) and boom! This 3x21d and l21b are in California right now, almost to Az. Stay turned for those reviews as they will go up same day I get those lights.
@@Next96300 yes all of the L21B variants are extremely good value, I think they may be the very best value flashlights available full stop. The size of the reflector, ease of modding, and availability of parts are just amazing, the only thing I still want Simon to release for the L21B is an op reflector so I can try an sft70 in it, I still may try it with the smooth reflector when I get my next order of sft70s in but I’m 99.9% certain it will have a black spot in the beam. I did look into the WT90 driver since you mentioned it and it is interesting, it uses a resistor bank for lower currents instead of the typical set of 7135’s and then still has a FET for higher currents. That is definitely a more expensive and bespoke way of doing things but it should be very reliable and more efficient at lower current. Congrats on your pioneman k90, I bet you got it in silver since you said you like that on the wt90, I also prefer the silver when offered so I think that’s going to be very nice. I just ordered a bunch of convoy drivers, hosts, and mcpcb/leds. Did you use a convoy driver on that sft70 build you did a little while back? I’ll be using the convoy 6v5a driver for the sft70 and I was wondering how many lumens to expect, I’ll be putting one in a m21b and an s2+. @@FalconFXICCYit's also 500 bucks and 500 something lumens. This might is more impressive (in my opinion), more practical, and a fraction of the price
This LED can draw up to 35 Amps on direct drive. But if the Astrolux MF05 cannot pull 7,000 lumens while running at 32A, this Convoy won't get anywhere near the Acebeam K75, let alone a BLF GT90 or the MF05. It might be "max" 28A, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's driven well below that, probably in the 18-20A range judging by the output.
Agree!, lots of factor involved, heatsink, heat dissipation, active/passive cooling, mass of the host, ability of the driver to maintain regulation of voltage and current available from the battery/battery pack, circuit/wiring resistance; all comes into play. And remember, turbo are not for continuous usage, the higher lumens we want to maintain, the higher numbers of factor comes to play. Cheers🔦

The code has been updated on all new releases to drop that low, so it wouldn't matter even if a buck/boost was used. The code on previous models wouldn't reduce below High/35% no matter the temp it rose to. The 4X18A easily hit over 100°C if left on.
