Your smile is contagious and the way you chuckle at your mistakes is cute. Best of all the info is spot on. I've been considering setting up starter trays for years, thanks for the motivation. I grow quite a few orchids as my winter crop 😉and the simple thought of using a darker space is just perfect.
it looks great, and you've got it under control by you thorough description. I used to have one for starting my allotment plants too but illness prevents me now from doing it for myself. I really enjoy your videos and wish you great success. I still have my allotment but can no longer dig or plant it,but luckily I still get returns from the fruit trees and bushes I planted over the years. I found my grow cabinet very useful for getting early varieties of sweetcorn to a decent size for planting out,and harvesting several weeks earlier than my neighbours plots. They seemed to get away much quicker, and the first pick of any crop always taste magnificent, the first cob,the first pea pod,the first carrot or tomato of the season, any crop in fact. Congratulations on keeping your chili alive over the winter. That is a major accomplishment considering the lack of light and stubborn pests that usually thrive in the dry and warm indoor climate.
Last Sunday 3/21, I started this year’s vegetable seeds. I garden in zone 4 Minnesota, USA so I have about 8 weeks until the last frost date. My indoor set up is an inexpensive 4 shelf unit with a heavy plastic cover. I don’t have a window with good sunlight so I have LED grow lights for each shelf.
Great video I’m pleased I’ve seen your IKEA greenhouse it’s given me inspiration. I have a south east facing windowsill in my bedroom, the chillies and my bonsai seedlings are loving it. This is the first I've ever seen and I'm trying to figure out how to get one in my small home. No wunny windows anywhere but I would love to have African violets again and an orchid or two. What is great is the cat would not be ale to destroy anything or eat it. I've got to go and measure out my one free bedroom wall. Thanks!
I really enjoyed this vlog as I am in the process of building a greenhouse/conservatory in Denmark, and want to include a 'grow cabinet' within it to enjoy whilst 'chilling out' in the early winter and early spring (I know what you mean about finding some time to yourself after work!). But you have weirdly reminded me of someone who I hold most dear. They trained as an Occupational Therapist in Derby, and then (as I fully expected!) gained a PhD and now work in Nottingham at the QMC. Sorry if this comment is irrelevant, but you do remind me of them! Lovely vlog, glad I got to watch it. Keep it up!
Love ur grow cabinet Katrina !!! I am fortunate enough to have 2 - 4foot tall × 3foot wide windows on the south side of the old farm house I live in. I sprout most plants in the house an then move them to the greenhouse which is moderately heated. I grow lots of vegetables and cut flowers for my roadside stand. Usually I start at least 500 various vegetables and flowers. I love ur allotment ......unfortunately the wind is tough to deal with where I am because it is a quarter mile to woods in all directions. Thanks for watching, it sure does help keep me organised. It’s been a bit of an investment and seed growing really ought not to cost much money! You can simply do all of this on windowledges, if you have them. 😁
Very nice! I have a much more diy set-up that I hacked together to try growing lettuce indoors over the winter. It worked! It's now being repurposed to start seedlings for the outdoor garden. I keep finding more use for it so it tends to grow itself. Yours is much nicer looking though.

So ironic, I am not a huge house plant person (yet) because my plants usually die from lack of light probably because I chose the wrong ones, but also because I think it's restricting to have to put plants where they get enough light instead of where they look good in the decor. Grow lights can fix that dilemma, but can also be ugly, so I was searching the internet for attractive grow-light set ups like this and actually hadn't found anything I liked. But I like this. Thanks for sharing, maybe I'll become a house-plant-aholic now

Anyway, I'm super pleased to see it's doable so I'll try again this year! I have one question about the grow lights, if you don't mind: I also use them for my seedlings in a different set up (one shelf in our storage room, but I am warming up to the idea of expanding to a whole cabinet) but I find I need to keep the lights very close to the seedlings. I was surprised to see your lights so high up above the small plants! Is that because of the specific model you are using? I also have LEDs but different brand. Looks great. Enjoy 💕 I've recently been looking at polytunnels but so many people have trouble with them getting weather damage. Yours looks very sturdy. Can I ask where you got it from? Thanks in advance✌
Great video! I’m working on putting together my greenhouse cabinet. I have also purchased a spider farmer SF1000, have you had any problems with the magnet holding up the light? I was going to store my rare tropical plants in the greenhouse, I was just worried that the magnet won’t hold up well over time. Thanks!
Hey! I’ve had zero issues with the magnet and the hold of the light. Just be careful with the brightness of the SF-1000 on your tropicals. It’s an incredibly bright light and could easily burn the leaves of plans that prefer a more dappled light with low intensity. I’ve actually just bought myself two Anthuriums that I will keep in the cabinet over winter. I doubt I’ll need to turn the dial up past 30W. There could be other, cheaper alternative lights if your going for lower light tropicals!
@@homegrowngarden thank you for the advice! Some plants I wanted to put in the greenhouse were epipremnum pinnatum albo, monstera albo (when I get one), syngoniums, alocasia, etc. Do you think those would be okay with 30W or less?
It was a slow process that I staggered over time. I had to figure things out and adjust. It wouldn’t have been very interesting to film the whole process but there are many other videos on UA-cam of people building theirs.
Hi again, I was wondering if you could explain how the spider farmer’s electrical cord is running down the side of the cabinet. Is the glass shelf not resting on the tab that comes along with the cabinet in that one corner? Thanks!
I wonder how many who view this are aware of bottle gardens. Or know what a carboy is. They were fashionable about 50 years ago, but fairly rare now I think. No Alexa controls were required!
Hi, did your Cape Gooseberry produce any fruit last season.I had a few outdoors and time ran out with the cold weather so I didn't get any fruit so won't bother growing them again.
Yes it did but quite late. I think they much prefer to grow undercover. It is possible to overwinter them or take cuttings for an earlier crop the following year.
It looks great but I must say the cost seems to outweigh its functionality to me. Given it costs over 200 quid for this set up I could easily just buy a couple of shelves for less than 20 quid and a set up of heated mats and grow lights for less than 100 in total. It might not look as posh as this but I really can’t bring myself to spend so much on a seed starting cupboard..
Not exactly new ,( at all. But , it is cool . Still wrong but hey ... The prototype we have here is about 23 years old.(TR.) I have tips if you want . One tip that will change your game , completely!

Do you think those would be okay with 30W or less?
lovely video
Damn those plant thieves. Curses. Thank goodness for the lock. Foiled Again! ❤️
You should have done a video on setting up and adapting the cabinet. Always next time.
Thanks!
I don’t actually use the corner tab for the back right corner so the cable can fit. It’s a thick cable and quite a tight fit!
@@homegrowngarden Yeeeeeh! It is a really thick cable. 🤔 Thank you for your response! 😊 I kind of wish I drilled a hole on top for this cord. Hahah.
I wonder how many who view this are aware of bottle gardens. Or know what a carboy is. They were fashionable about 50 years ago, but fairly rare now I think. No Alexa controls were required!
I know what a carboy is! People are still using them to make terrariums with. It’s become quite popular!
Hi, did your Cape Gooseberry produce any fruit last season.I had a few outdoors and time ran out with the cold weather so I didn't get any fruit so won't bother growing them again.
Yes it did but quite late. I think they much prefer to grow undercover. It is possible to overwinter them or take cuttings for an earlier crop the following year.
love your scindapsus exotica
your chilis
look great
It looks great but I must say the cost seems to outweigh its functionality to me. Given it costs over 200 quid for this set up I could easily just buy a couple of shelves for less than 20 quid and a set up of heated mats and grow lights for less than 100 in total. It might not look as posh as this but I really can’t bring myself to spend so much on a seed starting cupboard..
Yes, I absolutely agree that it isn’t for everyone. It’s been an expensive project which is why I was so upfront about the cost.
Also, carnivorous plants that come from temperate zones, need winter rest in cold conditions.
Not exactly new ,( at all.
But , it is cool . Still wrong but hey ...
The prototype we have here is about
23 years old.(TR.) I have tips if you want .
One tip that will change your game , completely!
beautiful)
Did the chili seeds from the ones in the freezer germinate?
No 😞
What does it cost to run?
