C'mon UK, make them road legal at last. All sorts of eBikes can also go, what's the difference?
Krisztián Kőrösi E-Bikes are only legal because of their pedals. Legally an E-Bike or anything else that has a motor must have pedals under UK regulations.
Adz Playz scooters and motorbikes don't have pedals either. This is some ancient law that needs change.
@flip inheck the problem is none of these scooters are legal on road or pavement to ride. Even though I have driving licence too, I can't use these for commuting by law.
@flip inheck there is no EU law covering e-scooters. But other EU countries have added there own laws allowing them
that's why this country is annoying. Portugal has a lot of scooters.. everywhere you go. 50 cents per hour .. its amazing . the bicycle in Portugal same as Santander is already electric .. what is wrong with that
2:50 voice crack😂😂😂
You’re awesome Ben Fox. Your happy disposition is infectious. You make my day.
Can't ride e-scooter on the pavement, can't ride them on the road? English people need a revolution. That's not freedom. How come the most fun, efficient and green vehicle for the city is banned both on roads AND pavements?! It's crazy!
🙌🏻U said it best 🙌🏻
@flip inheck Are you stupid? Did u ever see an e-scooter? I ride a 6 kg carbon fiber e-scooter at about 25 km/h (I don't need more). I am practically a pedestrian running waaay slower than Usain Bolt. To need a licence for that is outrageous. It's like putting a tax for fat pedestrians. Cities need us, e-scooter riders. Fuck your poison smoking huge 1-2 ton vehicles! THEY should be banned from the cities!
@flip inheck An e-scooter is also not a moped. Mopeds can (rarely) kill people. E-scooters limited at 25 km/h can't. Mopeds are poisoning the environment. E-scooters don't. Mopeds need space. E-scooters don't.
@flip inheck They are not viable for one reason only: they bankrupt car makers. You only destroy your car in the city, not outside the city, where the speed is constant. I use a car, an e-bike and an e-scooter (e-twow top model). Bucharest, Romania! The e-scooter is the most practical by far and we don't even have bike lanes here. With bike lanes like in the Netherlands or Denmark, all the cities of the world would see a catastrophic decrease of car use in the cities.
@ENSIGN HAL How can these things hit you when they build cycle lanes for them, like in Western continental Europe? Ask for cycle lanes! You work for an auto company, right?
A TRUE scooter rider ‘never’ code of honor.
Say it with me....
1) I will NEVER rent one,. .....I will buy one !!!
2) I will NEVER be restricted to just one little area.
3) I will NEVER ride at only 15miles an hour. Lol. Never ever!! Lol.
And
4) I will NEVER stop riding my Zero Emission scooter in the UK, whenever and wherever I WANT !!!!
A WARNING To the Government.....
It’s not a motorbike, so don’t try to treat it like it is !!! It will never be !!!
So, legislation free !!! In other words...
No road Tax...
No motorbike license should ever be required...
No insurance...
No parking permit...
No congestion charge..
NO GOVERNMENT MONEY MAKING LEGISLATION TAXES WHATSOEVER, EVER !!!
You can’t touch this one !!! SO, HANDS OFF !!! You will NOT make money out of this one, like you do with everything else !!!
Considering “climate change, and on top of that, corona” !!! You’re supposed to be giving money to whoever rides a scooter, instead of driving a car !!! Like you do, to whoever owns solar panels in their houses. Same principle!!!!
It’s legal in most countries in the World, so UK Government, don’t fucking claim to be a Pro Green, and environmentally friendly,
cause you’re NOT.
Unless if we spend £80.000 Thousand Pounds plus, on a Fucking Tesla. Right?!? Wrong !!!!
Let it be known.....The UK Government is not green, until ALL SCOOTERS. are green !!!!
To the riders... Ride anywhere you want, don’t stop, and do not be afraid.
... Always ride safely. Always wear a helmet, but NEVER give up your “freedom of movement and your human right, to help save our Planet” 🌍
Well said 👍🛴

Ben Fox nice! Great way to test how the scooter handles airplanes and the TSA.
Wish they did this in the north west, excellent service just seem that it’s always London that the manufacturers are aiming for... next time hopefully the Manchester area?
What day did you film this? I was down there on Monday on my new Zero 9 and ran into them test riding around the stadium. I should have gone up to speak to them but was too busy enjoying my new scooter. I am officially hooked!!!

Lime has a trial in a city in ON, Canada on private land also. Sucks that most cities allow an oversized e-bike with pedals you'll never use but not a small electric kickscooter.
Agreed!!
I'm a cyclist converted to using m365
Is the trial finished already? I just got back to London after a couple of weeks and still don't know if it's still on.
No Still going for I think 2 more months! Head down its great
Im hoping the fact an e scooter hire company from the US has come over to thee UK means there must be a sniff of chance of the laws changing, but unfortunately due to many decades of not keeping our road quality up even if we did get hire scooters its far to dangerous for them and bikes to use the roads. Bike "lanes" that are just a white painted line less then a metre in width, pot holes, drains an inch or more below road height, bike lanes that just disappear, or end up on pavement, etc etc.
What happens when it rains?
ZeamTech game over 😂 They bring them in
I use mine in the Rain ( used it today ).
@@BenFox01 Why would they take them in, they are water proof and some people don't mind riding in the rain.
That don't make much sense.
It's fun and easy and relatively safe for an experienced guy to ride them when it rains. But it's not for everyone. I do it all the time for tens of kilometers in a super-difficult city like Bucharest, with stupid aggressive Gypsy drivers. My wife would never do it. But I use the lattest E-twow Booster, which is a very good Romanian brand with true European standards quality check, not a Chinese thing with Chinese quality check.
YEAH THESE GET PEOPLE USED TO CYCLE TYPE COMMUTING AND WILL INCREASE THE AMOUNT WHO WILL CYCLE THEY ARE SYMBIOTIC . They also use the same infrastructure so will increase the usage and therefore efficicacy of cycling infrastructure. They are like electric cars but far greener. We need to have them in london soon. maybe the government should regulate and legalize but put fixed docking points where they must be clipped in rail stations nd on bus stops and the side of government biuldings rather than dumping them on the road. They should also have helmets that clip to them and unlock when the bike is unlocked and relock when you finish through a hole in the helmet since scooters are more dangerous than bikes and it forces those who hire them to use helmets and also you can fine anybody by the app who does not put the helmet back in the slot and reclip it when leaving the scooter.
One issue with this is the UK Government is too uptight and old fashioned.....annnnd have you een our roads, pavements compared to say...the U.S where the bird scooters are doing amazingly well
@flip inheck Nope. e-Scooters are legal in the other EU countries. It is the UK Highway Act 1835 that make e-scooters illegal on the road in the UK. Regulation from 1835 ffs! Don't blame everything on EU!
London can't adapt to cyclists in years... Now scooter....
DerParadonym Good Point!
I wonder how many people will drive to Stratford in their car to try one of these scooters out, ha ha all that pollution saved will be generated going to test them out.
The best solution would be for the govt to simply make scooters legal.
But all that said it's a step forward.
Just one thing, old people should be aware of the potential harm they can do to themselves if they tip the scooter even at slow speeds, it end up very nasty, so a little training or guide would probably be advisable, especially older people because older people move much slower physically than young people and take a lot longer to heal, and when a scooter tips you don't usually get much time to react.
Another great video by Mr. Fox . You gave out more info than the very short news report on BBC London news this week although if you search for it there is an article on the BBC London News website, i note Bird are using the M365 Scooter in the Park ( by far, for the price the best electric scooter on the market, but am i biased because i own one ?). You missed an opportunity to ask the Bird man about what they propose to do on Match Days in the Olympic Park (Just saying in case football fans decide to use an electric scooter as a weapon) and what to do if a person appears to be intoxicated with alcohol , do the Bird watchers enforce that ? ... and...in the summer will they keep up with demand ?. Anyway from what i have seen it's slowly gaining popularity in this country , on a personal note (and i love my gadgets) , the electric scooter is the best gadget i own...other than my smart microwave oven...and smart TV ... and Smart Phone....
Hahah Thanks Mr! And brilliant points! Deffo get down there for a ride. And try your luck at a helmet ;)
i'll be there tomorrow ( he says ...reluctantly leaving his own electric scooter indoors ).
HOW THE HELL - CAN YOU GET PEOPLE TOGETHER AND SCOOTER WHEN YOU CANT EVEN USE IN PUBLIC TO MEET UP WITH OTHER SCOOTER RIDERS? WTF? I'm thinking of returning my Inokim light 2 because I haven't even used it yet and seen soo much legislation and controversy about the use of one not to mention confiscation - I'm better off moving outside London if its really like that? - good riding but outside of that Stratford area it's over scooter is at risk of being done for? 🙆♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
No please they are dangerous ride your own scooters iammmmm actually upset at the quality of acooter is very unsafe. U can’t ride over a pot hole or u will hurt yourself badly
the only reason i have a scooter is due to back pain when i'm walking up hill. and since i dont have a car its really the only way i can get out doors and get stuff done.
but i just cant believe just how old this stupid law is, it dates back to 1885. for a horse a carriage.
The power and top speed of a scooter should not be in question, only their safe use. 🛴
Why don't you see politicians on eScooters?
Nobody's made a chauffeur driven eScooter yet?
Ben, you need to know, you have unlocked the world of moblity for.me. I recently had to give up cycling AND walking due to severe arthritis. I tried an electric scooter last summer but it died at the first drop of moisture (not ideal in England!) Found your blog about the Zoom stryder ex and took the plunge into freedom 😊! I have to use crutches to walk but can scoot for miles with always the biggest smile on my face. I'm 60 and my 9 grandkids think it's just the coolest wheels thank you for making it so accessible. You sir are a legend.
Soooooo happy for you Steph! U r the legend! 💪🏻
It makes sense for E-Scooters to have the same privileges as E-Bikes , though i think E-Bikes should be upgraded to have 500W motors and E-Scooters 350W as we dont all live in Flat areas.
I don't think they should allow rental companies to hire the Scooters unless those companies make a substantial contribution to making the roads safer for users, i also think that they should not be allowed to leave the scooters on the streets, we have all seen the videos of the mayhem in some of Americas cities due to them lying all over the pavements , there should be manned pick-up/drop-off locations
Defeats the purpose though to have drop-off-pickup locations because the idea is to save time during you're commute. If you have to drop-off you're scooter at a specific location and still have to walk a good ways to a bus stop or you're destination then what would be the point in using a rental e-scooter?
Hi,
Are they still going?
I look forward to see you in Bucharest, Bird! I know, I know, Bucharest is a shit hole city in a shit hole country but still, there are lots of e-scooter lovers here and they are everywhere in the city! We mainly ride our Romanian-made E-twow scooters because they are awesome but they are pricey and people can't afford them but I am sure they would want to rent them. How about you give it a try?
Come on make them legal, we have electric cars now. Why wouldn't we have last mile commute with electric bikes, scooters, eskate, onewheel.
bit shit theyre only in stratford, need it in central london...
Am not hating i think stand up scooters should not be allowed for comercial purposes at this early moment of entirely new controversal transportation.
Frankie is flipping gorgeous. Yes please!
Thanks for showing us this, I’m disabled and unable to ride my bikes now but I can still stand up and would love a scooter for urban travel, and eventually combine with the tram to work, great job Ben 👍
I acquired foot drop a few months ago and in reality struggle to walk, I bought a scooter and it transformed my life...
Bkkbound I’m hoping that will be me I’m a years time or so, the law and the electric scooters etc are at loggerheads. We need someone to make a decent decision
Now that it is lockdown The uk is allowing renting scooters for use not private scooters
Until September
Is it going to be around London
What happens if you hire a scooter and find they have no charge?
Why the price difference to Paris?
£1 unlock .. Paris €1
20pence per min .. Paris 15 cent
I know! maybe its Brexit😂
Has bird official launched in london
Very good service and excellent
what about the elderly getting up a hill
We had Bird scooters at the oceanfront were I live in the US, but the city just recently banned them there I guess because they were overly concerned about pedestrian safety. I hope that this decision by the city will eventually be overturned and the scooters can come back. People get all bothered by e scooters because they're scared of anything new, but at the same time governments are working toward greener solutions to traffic congestion problems in these cities. Personal electric transportation devices is the future and haters are going to have accept that eventually. Sure, go ahead and regulate it because there are idiots that jump on these scooters who are irresponsible riders, but banning them completely is going a bit too far in my opinion.
Good comment, cheers Chris! 🇺🇸
it's basically a Xiaomi m365
Just a Bird Air!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Ben , does that mean that if i go to Here East and request a Helmet I can Keep it ?.
I want to know the answer to this also!
Can you use non bird E scooters on this route?
Yes!
Great video Ben. I'm definitely going to get to QEP for a ride. Would love to see these become legal.
Liam McLoughlin do it man! Its such fun. It feels like a Mario Kart course 😂😂 Would make a fun date too
Won’t ever happen. They take up valuable road space needed for us car drivers
The scooters do not actually remove CO2 from the atmosphere. This "removal" talk is magical thinking. They may have prevented additional CO2 being added by internal combustion movement. So would walking and cycling and running and to a lesser extent riding a bus. There is no magical CO2 removal mechanism in scooters.
Dude, are you on drugs? How come they don't remove CO2? They DO remove it. If enough people ride them, statistics will say next year that x thousand tones of CO2 were emitted LESS than the year before. That's removal! It's like you have a magic wand to remove CO2, because all of a sudden you ride something ultra-clean (very efficient electric vehicle), instead of something extra-dirty (an old Diesel or petrol car). Actually, if most people switched from cars to e-scooters (like I do), it's even better than planting a lot of trees. Because the trees can't remove that surplus CO2 but replacing most of the time (in the city) a car with an e-scooter CAN. I did the math, my e-twow e-scooter is TWENTY times more efficient than my car. And I have a super-clean euro 6 car!
@@peter130476 just process this for a minute. To make this thing especially batteries but some other rare elements that are being used in many other components they (companies involved) produce more CO2 and other stuff that you will be able to save in a year or more. In meantime you charge this thing and that adds CO2 (production of electricity). Let say within 2 years you are clear and equation says you are on the plus. Hey winner... oh no new battery is needed.
I get the point I see the good stuff. Less emission in big cities. But man it is all made in countries where nobody cares. CO2 lands in atmosphere and affects everyone after all. You think that you at least avoid diesel NOx? Nah man in the making of these beautiful scooters fossil fuels are used so even more cr..p is released.
There are benefits and so on but cutting on CO2 is not. I wish people dig before they talk.
@@resistor7081 You are so stupid I wonder how can you remember to breathe. E-scooters are not Teslas. They move people with less energy than classic bikes. The energy in your food to pedal a classic bike is less than an e-scooter is using. E-scooters and LSEVs are INFINITELY less polluting than ICE cars. And it's mostly about CO2, not only toxic fumes in the cities.
@@peter130476 I am a simple phd physicist that is my limitation of understanding at this point. I do apologize if I offended you but please dig into tech details before spilling venom.
Lol more people on e-scooters less people on cars and less car on the streets inside the town reduce the pollution from town!
Bird has to do it this way: rental points where they're allowed to and an explicit popup to the user "hey, you can drive here, if you drive further this is your fault and when you're getting catched YOU are responisble for everything and replacing the scooter."
Но нйгъо
Sooooooo what's happening now? How long until the trial is over? What's the outcome going to be? I have ninebot es2 I'm probably the only person in my town to be using one.
I feel it incumbent upon me to scoot any place I deem safe. (You can borrow this slogan for Tshirts, I won't mind)
I’d possibly be interested in running a franchise up here in Norfolk
Great video Ben. At the end of the day who charges them? Here in the states they have people who are independently contracted run around at night with the app which has a "charger mode" enabled that shows the location and price of each scooter. Then they must be released the next morning between 4-7 am with a full charge to get paid. It's become a very popular side hustle.
snackman Thanks Man! Well at the moment the trail here runs from 7am-9pm when I believe there taken in at night and charged. Yeah I’ve heard about that side hustle. Its a brilliant incentive! If the trail is successful and it rolls out across London Hopefully the same scheme will be in place 🛴
Here in Los Angeles (I'm quite sure) that they have 3 different models/versions that Bird uses. The Xiaomi M365 was the first but they've been pretty much replaced with the Segway ES2 and now this newer and heaver Bird Zero model which I hear weighs about 40 lbs. My favorite is still the M365 but are easier to vandalize and more complicated to fix. So from a business viewpoint I understand the reason for the change.
snackman- I feel like the Xiaomi is almost like the original escooter. There will always be a special place in my heart for the Xiaomi 😄 I am excited to try the Bird Zero 🦅 Do u know if they are already on the roads out there?
Yes for probably about a couple of months. Harry Campbell recently made a good video showing this model in action.
ua-cam.com/video/ayrOE86ZG9w/v-deo.html
snackman wow what an amazing place to live! The Tank looks 💪🏻💪🏻
Very good video, I'm interested in getting some form of last mile ride and I found this insight into bird really interesting
So after you reach certain age the helmet is not needed?😅
Weight limit? Important question in our country. I am simply tall, big frame and am at 104kg. Will this do for me? Why 15km/h if every cyclist can do 25 and more is average including kids on bikes, pushbikes... who got that calcs and statistics done and base on what? Using this I would be scared to get run over by bikers ;)
Good question - the models they use are the Xiaomi m365 which has a max pay load of 100KG. But Bird also do use other scooters which may have different weight limits.. So its 15mph not km/h - which I do think is fast enough to feel a lil thrill ;)
£1 plus 20p per minute? - Another example of US companies ripping off the Brits.
I used Bird in Vienna this week and it was €1 plus 15c a minute, making it £3 for a 10 minute ride as compared to €2.50 (£2.22) for the same ride in Vienna (a city centre with excellent cycle lanes).
Yep! Deffo a shame its more pricey than the rest of the world.. Perhaps this will change if/when they roll out in the rest of London...
The price is your last concern here. You are not allowed to ride them both on the pavement and on the road. Pretty sure you're not allowed to fly them either, so they're useless in your shitty freedomless country.
Wow I could have a new bird every day .......
Will you bring bird to Belfast please
Go over there on a 2000w off-road scooter 🛴

Great video. Went and tried one there the other day, but battery died super quick. I noticed Lime already have scooters showing on Thier app in central London.
Yeah I think they have a trail up and running somewhere too!

Great work on the video Ben. Did they reach out to you or did you reach out to them to make this video?
Hamish Webb Thanks Hamish Buddy ! Was a bit of both
Who’s your girlfriend? By the way awesome videos keep up the great content👍🏻
Shes called Carly, but not my GF
Wow they’re bargainous prices
Great to see different age groups enjoying them. I think there are probably quite a lot of people out there who maybe wouldn’t feel confident with a bike but would get on with one of these since it’s just standing up. The geofence works pretty well but hopefully they won’t be needing it for long.
Chris Till Yes that was my biggest takeaway - Everyone loved them. The couple at end came down especially to try the scooters and hopped on like they were Pros. Obviously it’s a different kettle of fish on the wild London roads but here it worked fantastic.
I hope the bird watchers use common sense about the age of the users, you would not want a child who is not tall enough jumping on a scooter, arms outstretched above their heads to the handlebars and losing control.
M365 vs. ES2 when?
TBC 😅
15mph isnt fast enough, you need to keep up with traffic in order to avoid being dangerously overtaken.
tomble womble , its carefully managed within Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park because Bird want to impress Transport for London in order to obtain a licence for a City Wide Roll out, 15 mph is more than 3 times faster than walking pace and for health and safety is an okay speed within the Park. As far as i know there are no vehicles within the park other than at crossing points.
@@skeelo69 I obviously wasnt speaking about whether the speed was appropriate in the park.
oh, ok ... The stock M365 if you buy it yourself is faster, also you can flash software to it to make it faster, sorry for the confusion tomble womble.
@@skeelo69 No worries dude, im actually thinking of getting an inokim ox.
