  • "Give Us This Day: Short Symphony for Wind Ensemble" (Mvt. 1), by David Maslanka.
Arranged for large saxophone ensemble by Christopher Bryant.
[In this performance, some recordings have been shifted up or down in pitch to match the correct saxophone range.]
    ---
This is my tribute to David Maslanka, one of my favorite composers for wind ensemble.
From the performance notes for this piece:
"From the beginning, constantly experiment with the ff dynamic to find its full value. Many conductors fear making a bad sound, but until players actually experience the piercing nature of a true fortissimo they will not understand the energy of this music, or have the ability to produce a beautiful and balanced tone at a high dynamic level. No fear!" - David Maslanka
Experience the piercing nature of a true fortissimo. I just love that.

Note that the environment behind me is cluttered and less than visually ideal because I originally intended this to be an ensemble of clones all performing in the same room. To see my failed attempt at rotoscoping, you can view the video here:

Great tribute, man. I was devastated to learn of his passing. But, of course, he will live on through the music he has created and also through the musicians that play that music. That's something I find enormous comfort in. Thanks for the video.

Amazing arrangement!!! Fell in love with this piece when we placed it my sophomore year in high school. The soprano sax was basically the oboe throughout the piece and I loved it!

This is absolutely unparalleled and incredibly done. I had the privilege to perform the percussion 2 part my senior year of high school and never connected to a piece quite like this. Amazing job!!

Thanks! I would love to do the second movement, but that would be a beast to arrange. I doubt I'll have the time to pull it off. But maybe one day!

Thank you! I used Finale to make the sheet music arrangement, Ableton Live to record and produce the audio, and Adobe Premiere and After Effects to edit the video
