Great digestible video, any chance you can upload the VOD similar to the ability tier lists? Either on daily or VOD channel?

15:21 One VERY useful part of imprison is using Imprison + Explosion vs slow Explosion users to completely jam up boom and eliminate risk in otherwise scary matchups.
Do any pokemon aside claydol get that consistently?
@@zilosis3794 bronzong
Or you could use a mon with damp, or a ghost type, or a quad resist like Aggron, or hope from protect luck. But yeah, though it is a niche it is valid, especially if you do not have the other options available.
Something I like to do is using imprison on a strong ghost pokemon with shadow ball to sweep a ghost gym leader/elite 4 (aka just shauntaul ngl)
You can also use Imprison to give them no choice BUT to explode, which is hilariously dark

A true hero
I actually have seen a good Imprison strat. In the final Mt. Battle fight of XD, the final boss has a Dusclops with Imprison, Protect, Ice Beam, and Shadow Ball. The three moves it imprisons can really set back your strategies while in effect. Protect is just a really good double battle move in this game with only double battles, Shadow Ball is good against Dusclops itself as well as his Latias and Latios, and Ice Beam is good on the aforementioned Eon duo as well as his Salamence.
Taunt
@@TheForgottenTainted Taunt sucks in gen 3, only lasting 2 turns iirc
So that's why this is quite hard game to deal with
Btw Pokemon company needs to give attention to these games too
I'm doing a playthrough of XD and this Dusclops strat also happens in a battle in Orre Colosseum. It's cool seeing it actually work (but also part of why my Walrein has both ice beam and blizzard). It's refreshing to see something different considering how much AI teams rely on confusion/para as their whole strategy in some of those battles (and it works when they do it!).
@@mr.sandman7339 Yeah also in Battle Revolution there are also some interesting Imprison movesets that the opponents use. The game designers always put Protect on the moveset as well if its double battles lol. These games were made before VGC or anything I believe, but they clearly understood how good Protect was back then.
For number one, there is also Shift Gear, which is just a better Dragon Dance, so maybe that deserves to be at number one as well despite not many Pokémon being able to learn it.
I was about to say that
@@oracle0_ You could say I’ve used the move Mind Reader.
And soon Victory Dance, a physical version of Quiver Dance. Only Hisuian Liligant gets it, but still.
@@Subatomicfish Weirdly enough, if you look up the move Victory Dance on Bulbapedia, it shows Iron Hands using it.
@@darklightning2730 that’s just because it was used via Metronome which Iron Hands can be taught
You managed to get me to watch an entire ad read just to hear the pokemon moves, genius
with Imprison I feel like a strategy that could be fun if you're doing a randomizer if if you get both imprison and transform. You use Imprison and then transform into your opponent, which makes them unable to do anything but struggle.
Wait it works like that?!?!
@@MercuryA2000 yep! Mew can use this strat (I'm not sure if only in one or a few generations tho) since it learns both moves.
@@byeguyssry Yeah, it got banned in the smogon 1v1 format because of that IIRC
Leech seed is even better than you give it credit, since it can be stacked with paralysis, burn, or sleep, which no other good status move can!
not you, confusion
@@dropfish3109 I mean fair... but all common confusion moves have terrible accuracy, rarely work, and lasts at most 3-4 turns. Attract is better confusion and attract is terrible.
An idea why lucky chant is niche:
In situations where crits really matter, it's usually also the case that you don't have enough tempo to waste a turn on preventing said crit; also, 5 turns might be too short, but also permanent would be kinda broken
just thoughts
That ad section was well done. I usually skip that. But I was so focused on finding each move I didn't realize I've been had until it was too late.
Laser Focus is the move that guarantees a crit the next attack right?
It's not a great move, but it can be used to keep an enemy from healing. You don't always have the option to use a move that would just not do enough damage to keep the target out of healing range.
Also, guaranteed bypassing Amnesia/Iron Defense/Cosmic Power stacks can come in handy
ain't that just glorified leer once the 2x -> 1.5x crit nerf became a thing?
@@athath2010 Valid. But it is nice that Laser Focus still works even if the foe switches and also has the Defense Buff Bypass attribute.
And has its effect for both attacking stats, so it's debatably better for a mixed attacker than Leer
I never claimed it was _good_ but it feels better than completely useless = F tier to me
@@priestesslucy3299 I don't think it's useless, just redundant more often than not. For instance, in the example you gave about it working even if the opponent switches, you're getting the same value by just attacking twice (once on the switch, then again for, presumably, the KO).
I think its best possible application is against Calm Mind or Curse sweepers that have set up quite a bit, but that might often end up with you trading a Pokemon for that chance (the user) almost consistently. This is more or less a desperate strategy to avoid wiping, though, so I don't think you should be always relying on it.
In my opinion, high F tier or low E is good enough.
@@TWLSpark basically, it's a medium term move.
Something I would be happy to replace Tackle or Pound or scratch with, but it's not sticking on the moveset long term
The only use I ever found for Disable was against B2W2 Challenge Mode Cheren, where Golduck can disable his Pidove's only damage move, Quick Attack.
That Yu-Gi_oh comment made me smile at the 10 minute mark. Unfortunately, field spells don't exactly work like that anymore, and each player can control their own field spell.
You have to specifically take theirs off the field by destroying it or some other interesting means.
That magnetic flux line was hilarious af. Jan has drastically improved on how to do sponsor messages.
It's been a while since I've watched a video of yours. You've got a lot better at making them since last year. I agree with pretty much this whole list. I would put thunder web in A because cutting speed is huge but I realize its not always the play.
Though I've started a lot of Nuzlockes, the only one I actually finished was Omega Ruby
In which I swept Wallace with a Quiver Dance Beautifly. Dumbass leads with a Luvdisc, he had it coming
That Beautifly reached the Hall of Fame, too. Quiver Dance is Fair and Balanced (tm) (C) (R)
I wonder where he would've put Shed Tail. Substitute with a safe switch? Hell of a move. Same for Revival Blessing.
It's crazy to me how different nuzelocks are to competitive in terms of what's valuable
Dude you are getting so good at this UA-cam thing. You’ve grown SOOO much over the last year it’s crazy.
I once used a Lucky Chant Clefable to set up for a sweep with Drapion against Riley on Iron Island in Renegade Platinum. It was a nice way to make the strat more consistent, though the move as a whole is pretty niche,
Doesn't Drapion get Battle Armor?
@@serpent2776 Yes, it does. My plan was to lower Riley's lead pokemon (an absol) with Intimidate Gyarados + Staraptor and Feather Dance Chatot. However, to switch around my attack dropping mons, I needed to use Lucky Chant to protect them from crits. So I did, and it worked.
I had a Miltank with Attract during a hardcore nuzlocke a few years ago. She carried me through _alot_ of fights, its such a broken move in the gen 2 remakes lol.
Why did whitney change her name?
Shoutouts to red rescue team where attracts works on every pokemon and has 100%proc rate.
I was WONDERING where Dragon Dance and Quiver Dance were (I forgot about Shell Smash) in your setup list! I immediately paused the video and wrote a comment down here asking how on earth you missed those two when I saw the setup list. I didn't post it because it was so unbelievable to me that you'd forget Dragon Dance, I figured there must have been some twist. I'm glad I waited.
PChal's script writing has been improving so much
Trick is unironically WAY stronger in rom hacks once you have the resource to "farm" choice items. You can just trick a choice item into the opponent then use them as setup fodder. There's some bulky mons like Slowbro and Bronzong that can learn it, too (unlike i dunno, Lucky Chant which is mostly on frail shit)
You don't lose the item after battle in Gen 5+, so you don't even need to do that in those gens.
I got to see about half of your original stream doing these rankings live on Twitch. Really fun list.
Also wow, many props to fitting in (almost) all those move names in the ad. That was pretty great.
Great vid, I would argue putting simple beam higher than C tier because of what it can do for an ally. Understandably a niche situation but getting a simple beam on your ally to use a swords dance or anything similar can be huge
9:42 I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS VIDEO IS BROUGHT THE SAME DAY AARON ZHENG LOST IN TOP 4 TO A WILL O WISP MISS AGAIN, 10 YEARS LATER
Swagger does have a niche over other Confusion moves by pairing well with Foul Play, though that's a high-risk, high-reward strat. If I was completely subjective, I'd put whichever is the Swagger clone that raises Sp. Attack in F tier because it completely missed the point of Swagger. Confusion damage doesn't take Sp. Attack into account, so raising it on your opponent is pointless, except now you've doubled their Sp. Attack, so they can more easily kill you. It's useless on physical attackers, and special attackers only benefit somewhat from it. It's just a garbage move.
The point is that it's a 100% acc that doesn't boost atk, so u can use it safely on phiscal attackers,
@@You-hp3rl There's already a move like that, it's called Confuse Ray.
Swagger can also be used in creative doubles setups with some way of preventing status (e.g. Persim Berry, Safeguard, Own Tempo), giving your teammate a free permanent x2 attack. In comparison, Helping Hand gives a one-time 1.5x boost, though it also has the benefits of being priority + boosting special attack + not requiring a setup. Still, it has a legit niche.
10:32 Field Spells haven't worked like this in like 10 years but god they probably need to bring that rule back, it was a good idea at the time but not so much now.
I would argue that Toxic Spikes are better than any other hazard on Nuzlockes, since you can scout before the battle what your opp has, if they lack a Poison type to absorb em can be insanely good.
I personally disagree, the ability of Stealth Rocks to take away up to half of a Pokemon's health just by switching in is unparalleled. There's a lot of Pokemon who will be immune to Toxic Spikes outside of Poison types, but no Pokemon can avoid taking Stealth Rocks damage (aside from Magic Guard users)
In playthroughs I do not often use non attacking moves but Quiver Dance, Dragon Dance, and Calm Mind if available I use them. It is only for Randomizers but I once had a Simple Espeon and used Calm Mind on it and it was unbeatable.
Generally confusion is pretty bad on its own, but I've found a nice use case for it when synergized with sand attack on early-game Umbreon sets. I ran crunch, sand attack, confuse ray, moonlight in renplat and it was nice for when you wanted to reduce attacking odds as much as possible for a setup sweeper
I used Encore/Disable strats against Fantina's Mismagius in my recent Platinum run, v fun
That ad read was legendary.
I need to touch grass cuz I knew every move mentioned. Even the harder to catch ones 😂
Flygon HG used lucky chant in his ultra sun and moon nuzloke, on the first olivia battle
Loved the concise information, and some background music from Phoenix wright.

0:37 I love how the world will never forget about pilot's death
Ok I got all 27 F tier Status Moves (+ bonuses) 1.Poison Gas (Poisons Pokémon 55% in early games but 90% in later games) 2. Sweet Scent (lowers target's evasiveness thus making low accuracy moves more viable, not F tier imo FlygonHG used it in once of his nuzlockes, 3. Aromatic Mist ( Raises ally Sp.Def by 1 stage), 4. Nightmare ( when target is 😴 this move will dmg the target like Sand Tomb will), 5. Grudge ( like Destiny Bond but the opponent loses all PP of the killing move instead of dying) 6. Miracle Eye ( allows Psychic Type moves to hit Dark Types) 7. Electrify ( makes opposing Pokémon moves into Electric Type moves) (Potential?) 8,9,10. Laser Focus, Lock-On, Mind Reader ( next move will not miss ) ( not F-tier imo cuz OHKO cheese) 11. Splash ( Omegalul), 12. Embargo ( opponent can't use held items for 5 turns) 13. Power Swap ( user and opponent swap Atk and Sp.Atk ) ( has potential imo) 14. Guard Swap ( like Power Swap but for defenses). 15. Power Split ( causes Atk and Sp.Atk of the user and opponent to average, Stat boosts don't count), 16. Guard Split ( like Power Split but for defenses ) 17. Power Shift ( switches Atk with Def and Sp.Atk with Sp.Def opponent) 18. Trick ( swaps item with Target, not F-tier cuz you can give the opponent a sh!t item ) 19. Craft Shield ( protect user's team from any status moves during that turn and has priority) 20. Telekinesis ( allows for target to get hit 100% of the time from any non OHKO move) 21. Swallow ( will heal depending on how many Stockpiles are set up) 22. Hold Hands (🙂), 23. Magnetic Flux ( Raises Def and Sp.Def for any Pokémon with a Plus or Minus ability ), 24. Power Trick ( Makes own Atk and Def Stat swap) (Shuckle Sweep???) 25. Happy Hours ( doubles Prize $ at the end of a battle, not F tier because you can use it to buy more key items) 26. Assist ( Metronome but for all the moves in your party ) 27. Flower Shield ( I forgor but it's trash trust) Bonuses: SuperSonic (55% confusion), Spit Up ( like swallow but for dmg), Celebrate ( 🥳), Magic Room ( No item usage for 5 turns ), aaaand Life Dew ( 25% heal to user and ally)
If you actually read all or most of this, you're an actual G. ❤️❤️❤️
the old jan would’ve just had the tierlisting stream edited down. love this video
I personally prefer to have a good offensive spread rather than any status moves but I do see the value in them for those who wish to use them. For the most part I can agree with your placements except for one that I noticed. At 18:08 I see mimic in D tier. I listen to nuzlockes a lot while i work and the status move i hear the most is Mimic, Rest, and Protect combos. In gen 1 + 2 just add Return and you have a set almost anyone can win the game with. If this ranking is just for nuzlockes like the title suggests then I believe you should put mimic much higher, at least B if not A tier. There are a surprising number of trainers out there that have a move on their first pokemon that can almost sweep their teams.
Mr Challenges,
You forgot to mention that sleep activates guts. Which means sleep talk can select a guts boosted move.
In smogon singles, recently I’ve played and have seen a lot of Eviolite Guts rest talk Ursaring. With facade and usually EQ. Although in a nuzlocke you could obviously pre sleep so the opportunities are even greater.
Bro you got me back into pokemon and the last few SV and PLA are bangers
That ad read would be perfect but I couldn't tell you what it was for because I was only listening for the moves
So I have used Trick before as an easy win condition.
Against Totem Mimikyu in UM, used Trick from Metang to give Totem a Black Sludge, then used protect and pivoting to wait it out and then take out the Bannette after it was down and couldn't call Jelli
Very niche but I would say giving your opponent a damaging item while taking their useful item is at least feasible in the right circumstances
I always love when I'm messing around in Pokémon showdown and someone quits the battle after my wheezing hits a clear smog following their sword dance or nasty plot. Makes me laugh every time
You literaly posted a minute after I lost my black 2 nuzlock
crafty shield and magic room in the ad were very clever
Nice wideo showing the power of powerless moves Jan!
I’m doing a little Locke of XY and I often use Flabébé to tank and support my teams with lucky chant and wish, Trickroom with Execute and hazards with Tentacool or Tyrunt.
I’m about to fight the 5th gym and I’ll need to use a specially defensive Goldeen (with Wacan berry and pre-poisoned to avoid paralysis) to break sturdy on Magneton using hail (in case my accuracy is dropped by Mirror shot)
I love the clip you put to represent your thousands of hours of experience

I have used Lucky Chant on a Pokémon once. A vanilla nuzelocke of Pokémon White. My Musharna. I had caught it in the Dreamyard while trying to find an Audino, because I wanted to remove it from the encounter pool to route for other shaking grass encounters. But it really came in clutch. Ghetsis fight, lost Serperior to N’s Zekrom crit, and have barely survived the assaults of Ghetsis’s mons, including a close win against the Hydreigon before losing a mon to Seismatoad in the rain. The Musharna came in clutch, being too bulky to kill in the rain without a crit, and setting up Lucky Chants along with dealing slow damage and using Recover, I won the day.
I would lose Musharna to some BS later, and eventually win the nuzelocke with a merry band of misfits clambered together with my remaining encounters, but that is the one time I’ve ever had Lucky Chant be useful. And it wasn’t even integral to some important strategy.
I think the move is seen as a waste of a slot unless under very specific circumstances, since crits can’t be planned for, and may be dismissed as a risk worth taking in comparison to a more useful move.
Sweet scent to ensure sleep powder hits is a solid strategy for setting up bulk up for example.
Or 2 sweet scent, sleep powder, and flash in order to make flash never miss. Then set-up.
Yeah, but that does take up 3/4s of your move slots and multiple turns. Unless the Pokémon your facing doesn’t deal a lot of damage, it’s very risky
The goat HM slave move set

Sleep powder

I can’t tell you how many battles this shitty move set has carried me through
