Oof, you're impressed by Criminal, then I cannot wait for the day you check out IDEA. BUT Criminal is still just such a masterpiece. I love them both very dearly.
Fun fact: all the songs you've checked out from Taemin so far have been done by the same choreographer coincidentally: Koharu Sugawara did his *Sayonara Hitori* (2016), *Flame of Love* (2017), *Move* (2017), SHINee's *Good Evening* (2018), *Want* (2019), & finally *Criminal* together with Kasper (2020).
Kasper worked on his solo debut song *Danger* with Ian Eastwood (2014), *Criminal,* & *IDEA* together with Kenone Madrid, Ian Eastwood, & Bailey Sok (2020), & many of his b-side tracks throughout Taemin's solo career like *Black Rose* from NGDA Act 1 (Criminal) album (another *must check-out* performance including, but not limited to all the ones I've mentioned so far).
Honestly, I'm not surprised that you haven't seen Taemin with more upbeat/intense choreos. Until he started working with Koharu Sugawara, Taemin had practically zero contemporary background. If you look at his earlier works like *Danger* (2014), *Press Your Number* & *Drip Drop* (2016), you will see Taemin with hard-hitting choreos in all its glory like with SuperM, but still so very Taemin/MJ inspired. No matter the stylistic choice, he doesn't lose his fundamental "Taemin" essence or flavor.
Looking back, *Sayonara Hitori* & *Move* were his 2 major turning points in his career so far along with his latest releases *Criminal* & *IDEA.* He has really outdone himself with this comeback as he was so very involved beginning with the concept building to even the MV producing & filming etc. I don't think Taemin would have developed his current choreo stylistic choice without Koharu's influence. Working with Koharu Sugawara, really made him start to dance choreos with sensual patience & anticipation. What I mean by this is that he thoroughly completes every single moves before moving onto the next one like you've seen in Move & Want. Even in Criminal as you've pointed it out, the blending & transitioning from fast/hard-hitting to slow/graceful patience has become sort of a signature "Taemin" thing within his recent choreos after Flame of Love/Move. I'm so very impressed with his progress & development as an artist. I seriously cannot wait until you check out more Taemin in your channel. You don't have to stan him, but he really does have a lot more to offer within his discography & work so far than what you've witnessed from Move, Want, & Criminal. And he just keeps on improving more & more as the years go by. So many people are aware of what he's capable of & are impressed by 1 or 2 of his works, but still sleeps on his other works. Trust me, this is one man that you absolutely must not sleep on. He's creating history right before our eyes (😂 I might have exaggerated, but you get my point).
Sorry for the super long comment, & finally, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CHECKING OUT CRIMINAL 💖😭🤣😍~

Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two dancers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO -- Taemin's best friend since they were trainees, who is also under SM Entertainment, as well as a member of SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends.
And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on both Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. There is literally no one considered better than them.
Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
"Idea" is another masterpiece and you will be even more blown away when you see that dance practice. If you haven't all ready, you really need to see "Idea" next.
As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is being held captive by the criminal who is the girl he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by the girl to the point where you are suffering from stockholm syndrome and you have now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. Even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) you can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc.
All of Taemin's dances tell a story. As he has said, he specifically designs his choreography to be a part of the story within the song and MV. So, what you are seeing in his "Criminal" dance is the fact that he is supposed to be held captive by a "criminal". That is why at the beginning you see his wrists are tied up. As part of the story, he has been held captive for so long that he is no longer fighting the abuse and that is why you see him throw his bindings away. The criminal no longer has to tie him up to keep him there. The backup dancers represent the forces he is struggling against as he fights with his mind over whether to stay or go, etc.
So with every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker than the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed to the point he was suffering from stockholm syndrome; he fell in love with the person/criminal (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is essentially inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. So, in other words, even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself as he pushes himself in his pursuit of perfection) he still can't help but love the criminal (i.e. his career) and allow them/it to continue to cause him to suffer, etc. :D "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that self-inflicted need to be flawless, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D (For "Criminal" Taemin had 3 or 4 different choreographers who collaborated to come up with this choreography and several of his backup dancers are also choreographers. You have to be amazing in order to keep up with Taemin, so his dancers are extra special.)
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Criminal," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.
Taemin has always been known for saving his energy for where it counts the most -- for live performances and for filming MVs -- dance practices for him are literally dance practices, so he is just allowing himself to feel the dance and get in the groove. He is less worried about being spot on exact, and more about showing everyone the feel of the choreography and the story behind the dance. If you watch a live performance or see him in concert you will see how much of an expert he is. Seeing as he is also singing live almost 100% of the time while performing for 3+ hours, you will notice moments where he conserves his energy, only to release it full out during the most intense parts of the dance or performance.
Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With more than 12 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he has only gotten more magnificent over the years.
Now after 12 years, Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles (he is only 27) and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him.
The funny thing is, although Taemin is ultra confident when on stage, when not performing his personality is the complete opposite. That's what makes him even more lovable and why he is so popular.
When on stage, Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he become the most powerful and magnificent performer that command the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance.
When not on stage, Taemin is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae (youngest member) of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL.
SHINee are a 5 member group that is known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee is the group that really set the standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups work to reach.

I’m sure you know everyone has their views so here’s mine; I’m always on the end of my seat speechless every time he releases new content he never fails to impress and who dares to seduce & hurt our boy? Because i’m coming for you 😡😅 and OMG there was so many representations that remind me so much of his previous music videos “Danger”, “DOOR”, “Sayonara Hitori”, “Thirsty”, “MOVE”, Press Your Number”, “WANT” and “Famous” etc I have no clue where to start. Everything up to this point is 100% proof that TAEMIN is South Korea’s Famous Smooth Criminal; the korean michael jackson of generations who is a global vocal and dance legend because FACTS, there maybe many titled ‘Kings of Kpop’ but Taemin is the ARTIST OF SLL ARTISTS that debuted after him. With that said, he explains each track during his comeback Lounge VLive Showcase. I lost count how many times i’ve watched this, I see it as better updated korean version of MJ’s “Smooth Criminal” removing the word ‘smooth’ and going with just “Criminal” because Taemin is a creative music genius #TAEMIN_Criminal #SHINee #SuperM *
LOL it is impossible to resist Taemin’s powerful presence & elegant angelic voice that memoizing. The more you learn about him; you will see allot of MJ influence since he is a big fan of michael jackson as an artist especially as a dancer who has been dancing since he was 10 years old up to the 12 year training & practicing after SM Ent as a trainee then debuted as a SHINee member at age 14 years old, now Taemin has made his 3rd debut as a inspirational legend Kpop Artist as a member of SuperM.*

I love criminal as an ode to Taemins relationship with dance. He's been dancing since childhood, his innocence and best years given to dance and performance in general and there is something more like a compulsion there. His heart stolen from a young age, his body belonging to the stage. Led by the hands, by his feet, he wants dance and music and his artistry to destroy him more.
His dancers playing "Dance" thoughts in his mind.
I love the little deliberate references to MJ because that's where it began for him and in a song titled criminal it's perfect. The thriller moment like that zombie walk in a song where he's basically saying his powerless and loving it is just...amazing.

wow thank you so much for finally making this review!!!
    *WARNING LONG ASS COMMENT*
Through the whole video I could just feel myself nodding my head along with what you were saying adn just thinking "thank god a dancer is finally talking about this video and breaking it down"
Why I love watching you beaking down k-pop choreo videos:
I think prop use in dance and esspesially k-pop isnt talked enough about and I really appreciate you breaking down how hard it is to dance with hands bounded or with props, and how important good use of props can be to the dance and structure of the choreo. I think the entire progression of the linked hands was so well done by encorperating differnt levels and different movement, it's just so pretty to watch.
Contrasting movement in k-pop choreo isnt something people pay much attention to and I'm so glad someone with a platform has said something!! Also the pedestrian walk to the back and then the musicallity of the turns (showing they are now dancing), I think is so well done and just the whole choreo is amazing but thats to be expected of Taemin.
(I'm here to listen to you "blabber on" ! I'm here for your insight and opinion! Please blabber more!!)
    Somethings I've noticed:
Particularly in this video and in Seventeen's Home Run (and Stray Kids Back Door) is how the transitions of formations can really showcase the same movements differently, and in k-pop you dont really see many cool/creative/ thought out formations. I think this choreographer did a really good job with that and it just adds another level to choreo that I just haven't seen with many other groups or soloists. The choreographer's attention to space and just the spaciousness and spacial awareness in this choreo is also so well thought out and allows for bigger looking movements that just keep the energy flowing through the differnent sections *cheffs kiss*
I think the quality of movement from the "na na na... destroy me more" part to the end is just so juicy and its just what you want for an ending chorus. Its captivating and exhilarating and just so energetic whilst remaining so composed and contrasted with gushy feeling movements; it's just perfectly Taemin's style and the other dancers do such a good job supporting and bringing the choreo to life.
It's a performance piece for one heck of a performer and I could talk about it all day! Thank you so much for just saying everything I was thinking about this choreo and more, love the content and if you read this entire comment thanks for listening to my opinions!

Okay so y’all have informed me that this song is about Stockholm Syndrome and I want to make it very clear that I don’t think that’s sexy 😭 my mind did not go to that I just thought it was kinky lol

You are right, the song is not about Stockholm Syndrome, which, strictly, is about survival and it is not sexy. I think Taemin wrongly labeled submission-dominance in a passionate relationship as Stockholm Syndrome. Also, submission is present in fantasies and that is why the song sounds kinky. Loved the reaction. Thank you!

Actually, he only said this song was ‘inspired’ by Stockholm Syndrome. I think it doesn’t mean this song is totally about it. So everyone can have different opinions and imaginations on this for sure :)

Btw people are silly to complain about you talking because why are they watching a reaction video if they don’t want to hear your reaction?? 😭😭 You're even considerate enough to pause the video before speaking so I don't know why they have a problem with it

Have you considered doing reaction videos to Bollywood dances? Something with Nora Fatehi perhaps?

I really love watching Bollywood and traditional Indian dance, but I have no reliable knowledge or experience to speak on it. That's why I'm hesitant to make a reaction :)

Check out Nora Fatehi in Dilbar. On version is the more traditional cabernet belly dancing from an action movie and the Arabic version was a more light hearted romance version. Plus lots of the Bollywood numbers are very influenced by pop and hip hop. Your opinion/reaction is as valud as anyone's. Also nany Western born dancers are employed in Bollywood.

Sorry this has nothing to do with the video but girl, i’ve been thinking of getting an industrial piercing. How badly did it hurt??

    • @gracegrimms1627
      @gracegrimms1627  3 роки тому +1

So I got my industrial done while getting 3 other ear piercings done so it hurt a bit more than it normally would for me, but it’s nothing terrible at all. It’s the healing process that can be a little tricky, especially with wearing masks and if you have long hair. As long as you keep it clean it shouldn’t hurt too much though :)

I have just one request. Wouldn't it be better if you listen to the song with both the ears... You would be missing out on so much melody.
You can still talk while u wear both ears.

The headphones aren’t plugged into the computer (where the audio is coming from). The headphones are used for their microphone so my voice can be heard more clearly :)
