Colbert loves his brown liquor, too, so it seemed especially insulting for him to just dump Fresca in it.
Yeah, Sam seemed hesitant about it being on the rocks-the Fresca was sacrilege I think.
If he didn't want Sam on the show, he shouldn't have invited him. Pouring that sugar-free, glorified horse piss into Sam's scotch was absolutely rude. The interview, in general, was the worst I've seen so far on The Late Show at any rate. Colbert, you are MUCH BETTER than this.
Yeah it was really off. I don’t know the guest he seemed fine on the show itself but there was something seriously awkward going on there. If you don’t like the taste of the scotch you just take one sip and say yum and that’s it. I like Colbert but it was weird to see him drown the scotch in a fizzy drink and then mock it. Very bizarre there is definitely something going on there.

I love Stephen, but that interview was a mess. So many things to talk about and Stephen chooses to be disrespectful and boring. Everybody knows that Sam is sexy, the meaning of Sassenach, the scottish accent and etc. That's not news. Stephen reduced him to stereotypes. Sam is such a nice guy and he deserves a better interview.
Matheus Alves couldn’t agree more, thought Colbert had class, but he treated the interview like an afterthought. I love John Oliver too but he was on earlier in the week, didn’t need that endless skit with him again, reducing Sam’s time to maybe 5 min?

I don't watch Outlander, had never heard of Heughan, and don't drink scotch, but Colbert just dropped several notches in my esteem of him. Badly done, Stephen.
My only theory is that Stephen's wife is a Jamie Fraser fan... That Fresca killed my soul. Dinna fash, Sam.

Outlander is finely tuned porn for the female brain the likes of which have not been seen since the Twilight saga. I could write a psychological dissertation on it. An EEG hooked up to a woman watching the show would light up like a Christmas tree, (same was a male brain watching porn).

It was a set up joke. Discomfort humor and making fun of Americans for ice and disgusting crap in the whisky.

Our instinctive take was obviously shared by many. It just seemed weird and uncharacteritically mean-spirited. If the guest was Oliver or Stewart, different story.

This whole interview was so sad. Colbert didn’t knew anything about the guest, nothing about the scotch, the show, himself. 0 effort on knowing him and 0 effort in the interview itself and in top of all that, you go and put soda on his own scotch? That’s disrespectful man, if I was Sam, I would left there.
Tomás Glavina Yes, Stephen is often invested in his guests, but he told Catriona last year that he’s never watched Outlander, and he sadly has made no attempt to know anything about it...or the actors. It felt like Stephen also had a bias toward Sam being just a sex symbol, and Sam deftly moved back to the series itself, and the story it wants to tell. It was a rare bad interview, and not because of Sam.

Man Stephen, this was a weak interview! Didn't asked him about the show, just have him as a sexy prop and disrespected his Whiskey like that? And Sam is such a beautiful person, ever so charming and composed very professional of him to carry on in such a calm way.

Colbert planned ahead in his mind to destroy Sam. It didn’t work though. Mr. Heughan is bigger and better than Colbert will ever be and also more popular. Mr. Heughan has heart dignity and grace, which Colbert will never have.
That’s ok Holly. I’m glad it aired. It shows what kind of man Colbert is in his heart. It also showed what a real man should be. Mr. Heughan was kind and gracious under fire. Now that’s a real gentleman!

If you notice, Colbert doesn't have ice in his whiskey he drinks during his monologue. What the hell was with the ice and the garbage pop? I am pissed at Colbert. It didn't have to be Sam. It could have been any one and I still would have been angry about how Colbert acted and I like him generally. He was just plain rude and disrespectful. Sam has worked hard to get where he is at and no one knows that better than Colbert how hard it is to get there. He needs to remember he is not the only one that has done the work.

You think the show would have filled Colbert in on "Outlander" before they had Sam as a guest. He seems not to know a thing about it. And he murdered the Scotch. LOL
Since he has already had Caitriona Balfe on the show, he should certainly be aware. The whole thing was horrid and I don’t plan on having to endure a repeat.
Stephen know everything before hand. Trust me. Think about the stupid lines Colbert had Mr. Heughan read. Stephan was out to prove he had a better Scot accent than Mr. Heughan. He rehearsed it and I wouldn’t be surprised if he hired a coach to help him get the accent just right. Didn’t anyone notice Colbert celebrating after he read his lines, as if he won the challenge. Colbert only ended looking silly and jealous of Mr. Heughan.
That was easily Stephen's poorest interview, and seemed a bit hostile towards the guest. It was a mess at a minimum and the way Stephen treated his Scotch was absolutely rude and insulting. I would not be surprised if Sam's agent refuses to let him come back in the future. Stephen didn't just botch the interview, he actually wronged Sam by how poor form it was. I'm very disappointed in Stephen on this one. We hold you to a higher standard Mr. Colbert.
I totally agree Sunny J! I don't know why Stephen acted that way towards Sam. It was rude & hostile! Sam's such a nice guy! Stephen did wrong Sam & I hope that Stephen apologizes for it! If not, I hope that Sam goes onto the James Corbin, Jimmy Fallon, or some other show like it in the future & not return to Colbert's show.

Sam is such an amazing actor! Theatre trained, they could have talked about that, as Colbert seems to know a lot about theatre . Sam is also a gentleman and a wonderful person who works a lot for charity (MPC, Blodwise) that could have been mentioned too. And why on earth did Colbert disrespect the scotch like that? 🥃 I don't drink alcohol, but I found that very weird.

This was the worst interview ever on television. Sam did not deserve this at all. He was presented as a pretty boy by Stephen, why? My regard for Stephen Colbert has plummeted after watching this interview. Outlander is a terrific show and Sam is a fantastic actor, not just a sex symbol. I’m almost finished watching the fourth season of outlander and Jamie has his clothes on almost all of the time, so for Colbert to have made that remark about having trouble finding a shot of him with his shirt on was just ridiculous. There were so many questions he could have asked about the show, the actor’s previous history, his addition to the production team, etc. , but no, all we get is disrespect and rude behavior. Was Stephen jealous or something? That was awful!

That was the strangest interview. It was so completely all over the place, rushed to do so many bits, and oh gracious, THE FRESCA. They shouldn’t have let it even air.
I was very excited to watch Sam on the show, but was disappointed with the way Stephen Colbert treated Sam. Felt he was very disrespectful. Its not like he never drank the neat Scotch/Whiskey on the show before, with Matthew McConaughey and more. Past few episodes I felt Stephen Colbert has become more rude to his guests. Could be that he has actually tasted it before the show and thinks it sucks. Just because a celebrity makes something doesn't mean it's good and you should waste your money on it. Also, could be fresca paid for a spot on the show and this is what they decided Stephen should do. You guys are getting overly excited about a scripted show as if it's live and organic.

Scotch bit aside, this was an awkward, rude and half-assed interview. Like, Jimmy Fallon level but make it mean and sexist. 3 years of covering Trump ad nauseam must have gotten to Colbert. Not a squealing diehard fan but really, I felt bad for the poor lad.

My goodness! I cringed, and it appears by all the comments I was not alone. This is not the Stephen we have come to know. Seemed like Stephen had some beef with him and Stephen was forced to do the interview. Not cool.

I generally love Colbert but I found him to be extremely rude and ungrateful with Sam. Sam brought him a gift and Colbert totally insulted him. You could tell by Sam's reaction he wasn't happy with the behavior but Sam being polite and easy going handled it with class. I always like Colbert but I found this unacceptable. I understand Colbert has his own whiskey but that is no reason to not taste another whiskey with respect. Actually I think he owes Sam an apology. I hope Colbert's head isn't getting too big. That has wreck a lot of people on TV.

I have to agree with everyone ! Stephen was rude, dismissive and underwhelming. With this kind of behavior, I have to reconsider watching the show in the future. I doubt that Jimmy or Seth would be such a poor host.

I don't watch Outlander so I don't know this actor, but I feel that Stephen was a bit passive-aggressive with him...
You really should binge watch. It is one of the best shows ever. Every episode is jaw dropping. Old time shows were not my thing either, but i instantly fell for this one. You are really missing out if you do not give it a try.

Truly a magnificent show. And having watched Stephen for years this was one bizarre interview and certainly not his best. And as for the Whisky segment. Very strange.
Yeesh... little cold to Sam about his whiskey. Damn, and mixing it? Jeez, rude. I don’t drink but if I was having a guest on a talk show I would’ve at least tried the pure product. Sam is always so polite, but damn Steve wasn’t polite at all.

OMG that's bizzarre and hilarious. In Spain people often assumed I would make Te Americano by steeping tea in hot milk (and water maybe?) and I was like, I don't do that...I don't think ANYBODY does that....I have never heard of anybody doing that 😂😂😂

This was such an awkward interview. It felt like they were both uncomfortable with each other. Maybe it’s just me but I find Stephen (whom I absolutely adore watching) has lost his mojo recently. He looks tired and it feels like he’s just going through the actions of hosting the show.
I’m also perplexed about the whisky and fresca thing. Even if it was scripted, it wasn’t funny.
Second time this week I am unimpressed with Colbert. It's as though, now that he doesn't have enough to snark over the the guy in the WH about, he's snarking anywhere else he can. Stephen, maybe you're not as funny as you think you are. Judging from comments on this clip, an attitude adjustment might be in order.
Did Stephen just urinate in that glass of scotch? He did according to Sam's reaction.

Stephen could have put more effort I think! Also the description is wrong: They are in the fifth season!
How could the writers not have known what Sassenach means ? It is literally one of the first things he says in the show. Maybe they did it to make him explain it but it would have been so much nicer to make him feel included if they would have done that easy research.
I was also so disappointed with Stephen Colbert's behavior. Bravo for keeping your cool under pressure!

Why wasn't Sam promoted at the top of the hour? He is as big a draw as James Marsden if not bigger (for a lot of people).

Poor Sam - always with the rude questions, usually a "what's under the kilt" comment. The worse was when Sam was on with Strahan who gave him a 40yo birthday basket with prune juice and a nose hair trimmer, seriously?!?
Sam has worked long and hard for his career, he respects his cast mates and is very generous to fans; involved in many charities - Sam is THE KING OF MEN and deserves all and only the best!!

Why Stephen Colbert?!?! Why?! Very disappointed because I really think you are a very intelligent person, who respects those who deserve it, but this "interview" was a total disappointment ... You were rude, disrespectful, and condescending to a person who is always of unparalleled delicacy and education. If Sam was "cannon fodder" and was on the show just to fill up time, he should have been treated as well as any other guest, even if it was just to show respect and thanks for the presence and the offer (I know everything is trade and Sam took the opportunity to show his product, but others did too and were not minimized for that!). One more thing, I am sure that, if you wanted to, you would find many other pictures of Sam (fully dressed or not ...) showing his wonderful work of charity "My Peak Chalenge", and even without clothes he is brilliant, not only for his body (work that also requires work and commitment), but also as an actor, as eps 15 and 16 of Outlandr's 1st season are the perfect example of the great actor he is, who takes risks, and is fearless! Nobody is condescending to Fassbender for taking off his clothes, let's be fair ... And this was my TED TALK ...

Sad - because I’m a fan of Colbert - but that was terrible. Never mind that these shows always stick the Outlander cast at the end like an afterthought but he put MOUNTAIN FREAKING DEW in Sam’s scotch!! Uggg - and of course the obligatory heartthrob reference and talk of having his shirt off. This man is a great actor - just watch the first episode of Season 5 for the most recent evidence. Maybe when he’s Bond he’ll get some respect!
I completely agree with you. It was disrespectful and demeaning. I admire Colbert but today he was not right. KUDOS to Sam Heughan for still behaving so decently.
While somewhat true, let's keep some perspective: this isn't a documentary on acting; it's an entertainment program. Colbert's not going to ask him about the craft of acting or his motivations for roles. And let's be honest: the only reason Heughan is on TV in the first place is because he's incredibly good looking. Now would Colbert say to Halle Berry "you are gorgeous and your breasts are amazing"? No probably not. But it goes without saying and you can't have it both ways.
mrsj1417 I wasn’t expecting him to do that. I imagine it isn’t easy for Sam to always be asked that or be referred to as “heartthrob” or “hunk” because it does cause people to not take him seriously. He wasn’t some model who gave acting a go. He trained at a respected acting school and did theater, etc. He can be entertaining and charming without some interviewer harping on his looks. That’s just lazy interviewing. Even the questions some fans ask him are cringey sometimes - he’s always gracious but good lord the patience he has.

Stephen was absolutely rude to Mr. Heughan. 1. Adding Fresca to his whiskey. Mr Heughan was there to promote his line of whiskey and if Stephen didn’t like whiskey he should have had a stand in. There were a lot of Heughan fans who were extremely disappointed in the way Mr Heughan was treated by the host, by evidence of all the Tweets the following day. 2. I saw the show on TV., NOW ON UA-cam the negative remarks made by Stephen were edited out to make the host look better than he is. 3. The host implied that all Mr. Heughan was good for was his naked body, by saying there was only one picture they had where Mr. Heughan’s wasn’t completely naked. The truth is that Mr. Heughan was fully clothed over 95% throughout the series. All the scenes were taken from DIANE Gabledon’s wonderful Outlander Book Series. Mr. Heughan stated about DIANE G’s books but the host ignored Mr. Heughan’s statement. Cobert owes Mr. Heughan a huge public apology for the way he was disrespected and treated throughout the entire interview. Cobert never did taste the whiskey nor did he ever promote Mr. Heughan’s whiskey. The host has lost many many fans judging from the numerous negative Tweets on Twitter. The host gets an F- for a grade. Clearly Cobert was jealous of Mr. Heughan and Cobert can’t stand anyone else whose in the lime light. What fans did notice was how gracious Mr. Heughan was under the negativity of Cobert’s statements and treatment. Cobert owes Mr. Heughan a public apology on all Social Media Platforms, TV, and News Papers if he wants some of his fans back. Cobert will never be the gracious, kind and humble man that Mr. Heughan is. Time to eat some humble pie Cobert!
