A key component missing from Phase 4 that was overly abundant in Phase 1 is sincerity. Sure they're going deeper into the source material now, but there's no sincerity. They almost seem ashamed of it and have become way too meta with the "hey! Look how goofy we are!" narrative.

    • @peterfrank3365
      @peterfrank3365 2 роки тому +61

Indeed. MCU used to use lampshades to embrace the ridiculousness. Now, it's done seemingly out of shame.
There's a stigma that the superhero genre is rather infantile. But really, any story, if told sincerely could be appreciated by anyone. And being meta could've also been used to celebrate than the opposite.
The new MCU seems to agree with the stigma.

even though Multiverse of Madness isn't amazing I think Strange's conversation with Sinister Strange and the speech that inspires America at the end are two of the most emotionally sincere moments that the MCU has had since Guardians 2's ending, the fact that in the second one Strange was in zombie makeup and doing a silly voice on top of it just made it even better

on the other hand, they re purposedly makes everything silly and infantile and ridiculous. I mean, that level of dumbness was not there in Infinity saga. that level of thor 4, quantumania, she-hulk silliness was nowhere, even in antman and the wasp or even Gotg 2 - which I found totally retarded back then - wasn't full of stupid jokes, and most of them had something else, action or emotions to balance it.

The MCU started off so charismatic. It wasn't trying to be a film of full comic book senses like Raimi's 'Spider-Man' or deconstruct the genre using realism like 'The Dark Knight', and I'm in no way downplaying them; the MCU was lighter. But not shallow; it was laidback. To me, that was the appeal. It wasn't in either side of the genre, but its own place.
When the ambitious crossover came, the laidback nature and simpleness made it work. But at its core, there was sincerity. Yeah, it's also to make the big bucks, but there was genuine passion in storytelling too. Could it have been bolder creatively? Yes. But it was engaging still. It wasn't always a homerun, but it went on strong for ten years.
It's bizarre that MCU today decides to fire all cylinders with no clear target. It's as if they fear irrelevance. Truth is, as how Coulson would've put it, they lack conviction. It's flailing aimlessly because it's drowning in itself.

I mean… is that not what we want for the suicidal character who developed split personality disorder? To hug his inner child, accept himself, and become a better, more positive version of himself?
My biggest complaint about the MCU Hulk is his story being sidelined during Infinity War and Endgame, we DEFINITELY should’ve seen the transformation into Professor Hulk
Might’ve been cool to have the She-Hulk show or some other movie (a not-crappy Thor 4?) delve into that more with flashbacks
Like. Hulk is the inner child of Bruce Banner, coming forth to protect him, the transformation into Professor Hulk could be used to show him grow into the role of protector, he protects Hulk now, Hulk is still inside him, Bruce now is at the forefront protecting them because he has gained a sort of trust with that part of his mind?, I think that’s what they were building towards and cut out the middle section which is lame and makes the personality shift more jarring
I really love MCU Hulk, I like Mark Ruffalos portrayal, there are genuine critiques but none of them are with Ruffalo imo

"Its not that I dont like the outcome of smart Hulk, its just that we never see the journey". Remember how the concept arc for IW had a scene of Hulk and Bruce making peace with each other, then he bursts out of the Hulkbuster armor but its Banner in control? Yeah, very smart to cut that. guess they couldnt think of anything else to cut. At this point, a well done Immortal Hulk might be the only thing that can make the character hype again in the mcu, if only for one movie.

One thing that I think is glossed over with the Thor critique is the choreography of the fight scenes across the different Thor movies. While each movie does more with the lightning powers and embraces the absurdity of comic booj power scaling, Thor's actual fight IQ and practical skill has decreased. I hold that the best fight scene in the entire MCU was Thor walking through that SHIELD base and casually taking out that entire squad of agents like its nothing. In that scene the viewer is reminder that Thor, with no powers, is still a highly trained and experienced warrior who won't take anyone's shit. Even when reduced to being a mere mortal, on a level playing field, he takes out a dozen men like its nothing. But the moment he concentration breaks and his iron will cracks, the god of storms is taken out by a fucking taser in a moment of tragic irony to cap off the highly emotional moment of him being unable to retrieve his hammer.

One thing I don't like about Phase 1 is the Avengers lineup, one of the things I saw people say about the lineup was that Hawkeye and Black Widow were kinda unnecessary to the roster.
I feel like this could've been a bit rectified by having Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne replace them in the roster.
Like they could've been easily introduced in Iron Man 2 or some other Phase 1 movie and considering the fact that the MCU has really underrepresented these two, I feel like they deserve to be founding members considering that they are founding members in the comics.

I don't know why, but even though Phase 1 teases future projects like every other phase, it still doesn't feel tiring especially compared to Phase 4. That's why I like Phase 1 and Shang Chi so much. It prioritizes telling a story than to set up 6,429 future projects.

  • @TheNumber01Man
    @TheNumber01Man 2 роки тому +33

Phase One is still my favourite phase of the MCU. The films were grittier, smaller in scope, took themselves seriously, equally blended practical and digital FX and empathised character. Most MCU films since have become too "bigger-picture" with a massive all-CGI scale and so much humour, often of the meta variety, that we find it hard to stay engaged with these supposedly different and unique characters and concepts.
One thing I do often wonder is if the MCU (and Marvel as a whole) would have benefitted from staying independent instead of being bought out by Disney.
The Disney buyout resulted in the homogenisation of Marvel content outside the films (all cartoons, merchandise, video games, etc, seem to be based on the MCU instead of the original comics) and made it harder to work with other studios that had the rights to their other characters; Phase One had seemingly-easy distribution deals with Paramount for the characters that hadn't been filmed yet and Universal for the one that had (Hulk), so I wonder if that would have made it much easier to make deals with Sony and Fox (and Universal, for more Hulk sequels) to share costs and revenue and get characters like Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and the X-Men into the MCU much quicker.
At the same time however, being under the Disney banner made it possible to drive away the interference of Ike Perlmutter and the Creative Committee who drove away so much talent (directors like Jon Faverau, Patty Jenkins and Edgar Wright) and held back the diversity that the MCU, and superhero films in general, needed.
If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them! Pros and cons of the buyout? Any points I've missed?

20:00 They had the perfect moment to introduce smart Hulk if they just could wait until the time-travel scene. Banner could've been broken, sad and devastated by the loss of his friends for the first half of Endgame (instead of joyful and dabbing), and then, when they go back to 2012 and he goes to the astral plane, THAT could've been a briliant scene between Banner and Hulk, face to face, facing their problems and coming together. I think on my big gripes with Love and Thunder is that they set the reset button on Thor's character arc AGAIN. It's like he learned nothing and regressed. At least in Ragnarok amidst the banter they had serious emotional moments and there was an arc for Thor that didn't feel like he was learning the same thing over and over again.

Iron Man 1 - Solid movie from start to finish, and had a good tone to it as well. At this time in the MCU, the jokes weren’t too overboard and were timed during perfect moments. If the cave escape scene was made in the 2010s/2020s instead of the 2000s, that scene would’ve been filled with unnecessary quips and unfunny “humor” (see hulk vs iron man in age of ultron as an example of a serious scene bogged down by too many quips). In this case, they were balanced enough to show Tony Stark’s personality, but not have too many jokes to detract from serious moments, unlike later on, in the new movies.
Incredible Hulk - Back when Hulk was actually scary and also, Edward Norton was a better actor as Bruce banner (in Avengers 2012 however, hulk was still decent, even if ruffalo became the actor later on). It’s really only phase 2 and onwards when they started to reduce Hulk’s presence, making him less intimidating and turning him more into a joke.
Iron Man 2 - the weak point of Phase 1, but still a solid effort due to Tony’s character arc (a weaker version of Iron Man 1)
Thor 1 - Asgard looked beautiful (unlike later on where the color grading looked flat in the later movies), tone was perfect, and the entire story of Thor felt otherworldly in nature (as it should), compared to the overrated Thor Ragnarok. Loki was another big standout here, and was also a lot more competent as a fighter overall. It’s honestly unreal how dirty they did Loki ever since phase 3 (with the tv show in phase 4 being the worst portrayal of him so far). I don’t get the people saying that Ragnarok “fixed” Thor, as they went way overboard with turning him into a goofball in the later movies. It’s not that Thor 1 and 2 were “too dark”, but rather Thor 3 contained too much comedy. Not every MCU movie has to feel like a guardians of the galaxy rip off. Ugh. No scene in Ragnarok was as good as Odin banishing Thor as punishment (whoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor)
Captain America 1 - Set in the 1940s and, similar to the first iron man, it has a good story from start to finish. Steve rogers was also an inspiring character to many.
The Avengers - Released a decade ago, this movie didn’t really age too well, but it was a good closure to Phase 1 of the MCU as it served as the culmination.

There is definitely a cozy and sincere quality to the first Thor movie. I've really taken a shine to it in recent years. Thor still had his father and Asgardian friends around, we the audience got to learn more about Thor in his exile as he shared with Jane, Darcy and Dr. Selvig. He was still an other-worldly warrior in his heart, but now he was approachable and relatable. There was a very grounded, personal touch to everything. And the music along with the scene of space during the credits always fills me with hope.

Something that I don't think the MCU has ever gotten right is the characterization of The Hulk. He's more of a force of nature rather than a character than with their own thoughts and feelings. I get that we never see it in the MCU, but the Hulk is a personification of the abuse Bruce suffered from his father as a child. And what makes that so interesting, is that both Banner and Hulk share the hate and the rage, and are locked up in a body they can't control but have to share. Because of this Smart Hulk troubles me, as they erased an entire character who had individual thoughts and feelings. A person was wiped from existence and we're supposed to laugh. Instead of playing on a mix of Banner and Hulk's personality, he's just Banner but big. And now with She Hulk, he's able to revert back to Banner, which makes the "merge" of the two even more confusing.

There's this sincerity and genuine craft that went into every film of Phase 1 that's just been less and less part of their films in the subsequent years and almost completely neglected by Phase 4.
The movies might've not been the best scripted, structured or directed but it felt like they did their damndest best to make sure these characters connected with audiences, especially if we're going to see them come together and follow them for the next decade. They weren't shy to present them in their authentic comicbook self, focus on romance or be cheesy. These factors are why the first Thor is the best one for me - I just can't connect with Ragnarok and L&T's overly parodical nature.
There's this desperate, almost innocent sense of them crafting something cool and experimentive. Not knowing that by the end of that Phase, they were truly going to change pop-culture and cinema forever. And it made them go all in on the practical filmmaking, characterization and quality of the individual movie.

Honestly such an amazing show that I wish more people talked about. Barring Daredevil (kinda an untouchable benchmark at this point), AoS is without a doubt the best Marvel show, and most people who have watched it fully would agree
Also thanks for giving Incredible Hulk some love. After seeing the character be so poorly handled in the MCU in recent years, Incredible Hulk feels like such a breath of fresh air and at least attempted to tackle more mature themes with the character.

Let's behonest, that is not smart hulk in Endgame and post appearances. That is Banner as Hulk. Because in the comics, Professor Hulk is the mixture of Banner's intelligence with Hulk's personality.
And the score for Incredible Hulk is one of the best of the MCU, just like the score for Thor and the first Iron Man. But then Marvel decide to completely change their music for these characters in their next few films.

based on the rest of the phase, it's VERY generous to say Tony's change of heart comes from seeing how war "affects innocent people". he was a literal war profiteer, he knew what "collateral damage" is, he just stopped trusting anyone else with his weapons cuz he's "all about peace" so he must be the one man with the weapons.

So controversial thought. Thor should’ve landed on the Frost world without his powers instead of earth. He should’ve met innocent frost giants maybe some that had families that were affected by Thor’s initial rampage in their homeland. It would’ve connected him much better to Loki in the end. It would’ve made sense for Odin to teach him a lesson by showing him first hand what these people were actually like. The climax of Loki trying to destroy the frost giants would’ve connected harder because the bulk of the movie would’ve been spent on Thor understanding what his actions caused to the Frost Giant people and connecting with them as people. Thor’s arc would’ve felt more resonant and consistent. As it is I didn’t give a crap what happened to the frost giants at the end of the movie. They were only portrayed as black and white bad guys. There wasn’t a single showing of innocent Frost giants that didn’t want war. The climax was hampered because of this.

Yeah, Thor has an interesting plot, but the way it was written doesn't make it the best. My ideal first Thor movie would be an Asgard and the other Nine Realms focused story, with a younger Thor going on a quest with Loki and Amora to earn the ability to use Mjolnier instead, but we'll work with what we have instead.
Why was Jane Foster a scientist instead of a nurse? She could have been working a late shift at a hospital and accidentally run over Thor, and she ends up nursing him back to health. If Dr. Selvig and Darcy need to stay in the movie, they could be Jane's patients or something.

What made Phase 1 so great is that everything felt unique and individual. Each film had its own look and feel so really they were incomparable. I mean Iron Man felt like a post 9/11 war movie, The Incredible Hulk felt like a Jason Borne action flick, Thor literally was just a Keneth Branagh Shakespeare adaptation mixed with early 2000s Romantic Comedies, then Captain America (my favorite Phase 1 film) was literally the perfect Joe Johnston film, honestly the best film he’s made. I mean each film had the perfect cast and director that was unique and didn’t feel like one grand interconnected world. Which of course was the main reason why The Avengers was such a big deal, it wasn’t just that it was tying together an entire cinematic universe but it was tying together characters from completely incomparable worlds who all had unique character arcs and seeing them come together.

The thing is, even after Marvel had become a huge cultural phenomenon they had already decided on the storyline that they wanted to tell. They had a direction to go in, and even as the films got more corporate they had the right filmmakers to get the job done. Avengers Endgame does share a lot of the same issues that are sinking Phase 4, but it also had the boon of momentum gained from past films that was able to drive the story to a satisfying conclusion.
