- RuPaul's apartment in Midtown Atlanta at Juniper and 11th St. was a hotbed of creativity when RuPaul resided there in 1986. His backup dancers, Trade and Spicey, lived underneath. Video by Nelson Sullivan
I used to live down the street from Ru . You could hear her clickety-clacking in her candies down the sidewalk. She was a total sweetheart ! Trade was gorgeous! I watched them perform every time at Weekends! ✨🕺🏻✨
Stephen Heard wow! What an honor. 💕
Lucky! (Sorry mistype). Sometimes I wish I had a time machine
where did they perform and how did you hear about the events? I assume back then there were flyers and things?
@Lo La how much
What happened to Trade and Spicey?
Every footage of Ru takes you really there
👍
rupaul can live and adapt anywhere
Such humble beginnings...it's so hard to think that that was almost 30 years ago. There's no denying that Ru hasn't changed a bit since then, though. Trade could get it. Yummmm.
Rupaul made his way to the top
Fucked his way up
He was a bad bitch
@@thetacoguyy that's the way
No, his butt crumb butthole got him to the top... When you surrender to Goat Lucy enough anyone can make it "big".
@@shakawalker1249 definitely a b.... Since his father failed at making him a real man
Amazing how quiet it was here! It almost seems country! This corner is so busy now! Time changed Atlanta So much!
What's there now? I haven't been to Midtown in forever. It's too depressing now.
Very cool to see it like this. So gritty and real.
jehouse The building is still there, but now houses Live Well Chiropractic.
Can we please talk about that fabulous Peugeot 504 they drove off in. French car.
Unbeknown to him he was on his walk towards the RUPAUL we all love and adore today....he was just being RU and it paid off WELL!!!
Surprisingly that house is still there (It’s about the only thing left standing “Million Dollar Midtown”)
Wow. Brings back so many memories. I lived a few ATL places but midtown was 8th and Argonne. I used to work nights for a hotel and would go to Weekends late afterwards and hang with Ru in that little bar where he would go-go. Always SO nice and kind.
Memories... Juniper Street in Midtown was a different era. It was the street in the gay ghetto. Lots of different strange things. Cheap rents for the apartments just like this one. I lived in an apartment on 11th and Piedmont, right next to Piedmont Park. Had to walk on Juniper every day to my job. The things I saw! :)
r french ever see ru ?
Yes. I was 20 years young in 1984/85 and I was walking home from work on Peachtree St and was crossing the street at 10th, across the street from the Margaret Mitchell house which at that time was a complete dump and was in danger of being torn down. Anyways I came up on this wild chide (Ru) waiting at the corner. He surprised me with his wild look and torn up clothes, and smiled and asked me for change for the bus. He was nice, and I actually gave him a dollar I remember. He said thanks and I went on my way. He was charming. Anyways a few months later friends and I went to the The Bar on Peachtree and then Weekends (both now long gone), where we went dancing late at night. We noticed this weirdo (!) wearing nothing but a bright white diaper and waist-high rubber boots and wild yellow and blue hair. He was wild and great, we watched him dance go-go all night. Last time I saw Ru was latter or early 86 on 10th and there used to be a Subway sandwich shop with a small parking lot on the corner of 10th and Piedmont. That is long gone now of course. Anyways I saw Ru standing outside and I said hey and he said "Hey you're the guy who gave me some bus fare!" So I said let me buy you a sandwich he said suhadre and we sat down and had a pleasant few minutes of conversation told him I had seem him dance and he mentioned he was moving to NYC, etc. Then some people came in and they knew Ru and he jumped up and went over to them and waved me bye bye and thanks for the sandwich.Other than the Community Access channel and the American Music Show (and James Bond) I never saw him again in person. He ran in completely different circles than everyone else. Midtown was so different from what it is today. Ah... memories.... I now live in Texas for about 20 years now.
Thank you so much for these stories
Wild times in Midtown...see Ping Ting Ting and Ghetto Love videos...shot by Wayne Hollowell with my Kitten and Trade...
r french I lived on Piedmont Avenue across from the park. Went to hair school and LIVED at Weekends ! Sooo much fun! OMG !!
Lol...I thought Spicey was Prince! Love Ru! So adorable and wise beyond his years!
It's interesting how it all disappears when you get older. Lifestyles, clothes, attitudes, friends...all changes with time. Where are all these people now? Dead? Druggies? Fat and ugly? Brain-fried? Who knows. RuPaul seems to have done well for himself. He knew where he was headed..many others just rode with him and got off at different "stops."
J kK I don't know about Spicey but Trade/Fred is doing well.
That's life J kK!
however that doesnt make them any lesser. A lot of loving, charismatic, talented, intelligent people who could have succeeded just as much as Ru faded away. That's what I hate. Part of me thinks I could "make it" as a film maker, artist, musician. But its a hell of a lot of work and sadly the industry who decides what to accept
Fat people are young too not just old
They could just as well be fine, successful, living good lives, just not famous, as far as we know. Fame is for the very few.
I love seeing where people come from .
I can't stop watching these videos of Ru in Atlanta and on another Channel where he's just going to New York. He's come a long way but he still seems like the same likeable warm person
wow my girlfriend back in those days used to hang out w/ Ru Paul, lived near there. Their fav hangout for food was Cha Gio on Spring St. right near downtown .
wow! Ru has come a long way!
Wow ❤️❤️❤️ fierce
I seriously wish I could jump inside this video and hang out with y’all. It seems like such a great life to have.

A flower just waiting to blossom, RuPaul 💕

Anthony Hale lmao!!
My birth year!!
80's, daa divaaaaaa..
Love Trade’s T-shirt
Sadly...Atlanta has lost all of its character.
They replaced it with unbearable traffic. It's the new LA
atlanta is literally the same way now...everyone in this video looks like people i see today. I think you're just old but the young adult scene is exactly the same.
Imani Jennings no their not. It’s completely gentrified now and lame. It’s not the same. And it’s aids capital lol
@@imanijennings425 yeah, Midtown has changed quite a bit, and the young hip scene moved around, as it does, further into East Atlanta, Cabbagetown, etc... Still good nightlife around here, too. Liked Atlanta then; like Atlanta now. Every city you always here the stories of how great it was and now it's not. Yes, cities are not the same as they were 30 years ago, shocking!
You must not be going to the right places in Atlanta. Plenty of character…
Love the salsa music she listening to
Nostalgia
I love the cha cha music.
That whole street was... esp wild. Tiger Lil' lived on that block for a good deal of the late 70's Getting old just trying to place it all.
Tiger Lil, forgot all about her......do you remember Mickey Day, Feletia Fredericks and Sybil Kelley from the Onyx lounge?
@@mrmikeyd2 of course I went to high school with 🐅/Michael down in FL Samantha something was in the downstairs before she finished her change.
Omg, he was so poor. Now he can buy the all neighborhood if he wants!!!! So cool
Money isn’t everything, it should be your slave, not your master .
Thought Prince had gate-crashed for a minute there!
God almighty......I REMEMBER TRADE.....saw him at Ponce Pub and remember that hair...I thought it ruined his look......he came off as a hot little preppy
Omg salsaaaaaa
The ciggaretts everybody was smoking it's time to quit might be too late. Wow I proud of you and all that quitted be have quitted
