I think this is better than the tablet + keyboard combo for not having to compromise on ports, especially Ethernet and full HDMI.
Having owned 4-5 convertible tablets going back to the first general audience thinkpads and HPs, the Surface Laptop Studio is the best laptop mold ever made IMO, before even getting into specs. And I'm coming from the 1st gen version that you could probably get for less than this new mini laptop.

one of your chapters says “a.i. tools” but you just keep continuing talking about gaming. i also have the gpd win max. that one was deliberately designed that way to improve on the keyboard layout when compared to the gpd pocket line, with feedback from users. what surprised me about the pocket 4 was they went back to the previous layout on the pocket 3 instead of moving forward with the layout feedback they got for the win max. i would really like to see the win max keyboard layout on the pocket & where the mouse is to the upper right and buttons to the upper left. also with the bonus benefit of the true landscape layout as found in the max… no more sideways bios and boot menus when you multiboot your system. if they could only do those things then i think they would have a winner with current tech. no more tradeoffs like removing a usb port for and oculink port i would never use. just keep the good stuff as they are.
About the pricing, the original pocket 3 was mainly targeting IT and system engineer due to their compact design (they even included a wrist strap), the included modular port (that can be replaced with serial, KVM and even sim card) and dedicate RJ45 which is rare these days and age where everyone have to carry around a dongle for a laptop that twice the size of the pocket 3. The issue with it is mainly the price to performance not worth it and it was such a niche device with a screen too small for daily use, which when comparing to the winmax 2, the WM2 was on a much better spot. When the pocket 3 came out, not many people knew about it, they quite rares compare to other notebook, so seeing the pocket 4 being better recognizable was quite a nice change.

Hey Russ, thank you for the review, great stuff as always. I wanted to ask if u get to keep the review units companies usually send you. Regardless, thank you again for ur hard work, the praise u receive from the community is well deserved and I wish ur channel keeps growing. Cheers!
If I didn't already have a win mini for my tiny computer needs, I would have bought this in a heartbeat. Just *slightly* less pocketable, in exchange for a real keyboard, better trackpad, tablet mode, and all those cool interface options? I considered a Pocket 3 a while ago and gave it a pass because the processor seemed underpowered but this one is on par with or defeating most high-end full-size laptops...
I alternate between the ASUS TUF 4K capture card and the Elgato HD60 S+. Neither are perfect but the Elgato is generally more stable for me (the ASUS can be finicky with certain inputs).
Real talk, the gamesir tarantula is an incredible controller. The dpad is maybe the best on a full size "modern" controller and being above the stick makes it the only choice over the 8bitdo ultimate, gulikit, Xbox, etc. For retro games. It's so precise and lovely microswitch. The TMR sticks are ultra precise and have perfect resistance and snap back, the triggers are smooth and the trigger lock mode is so sturdy VS gulikit's, the grip buttons are just right, lockable, and easily programmed in the controller itself so I can easily set them to l3/r3, the extra programmable buttons on the face are useful, the battery life is great, it works with amiibo and wakes up the switch when removed from the dock, the dock is nice and doesn't spark like the 8bitdo pogo pin dock, the gyro is nice and accurate, and the rumble is insanely good. And to top it off, I genuinely love the gimmick that swaps the ABXY. It'd be cool if they could fit in a Playstation one too, but it's cool enough as is. I've been looking for a "do it all" controller for a while and the tarantula is the first that actually works amazingly with everything from retro to switch to PC without compromise.
Great review! I want to tell you that "chipset" does not refer to the CPU and GPU. Chipset includes the IO and interconnects. I believe the northbridge and southbridge are included. Certainly PCIe capabaility. For example, the recent X870 AMD motherboards have the X870 chipset, sans CPU or GPU.
How is the screen connected (electrically) to the main unit. Can't be a ribbon cable like most laptops because of the swivel. Always swiveling in the same direction would damage a cable. Does it only swivel 180 and then you have to go back the other way?
Excellent review! I know you've discussed this in prior GPD videos, but what's your opinion on running Bazzite on this device? Would love to get your take! Thanks again 🙇♂
From what I've seen Bazzite should run well on the HX370, but I'm not sure if it would be a good match for using this laptop as an all-around mini solution, since Bazzite is so gaming-focused. I plan on using this for stuff like email and even though you could manage that via Bazzite, it probably wouldn't be as easy as just using Windows. Definitely something I am considering!
Okay. This form factor with joysticks and rotating screen would be awesome (pen support would be great also to sign and note stuff). Hoping to see it for the next GPD Win.
GPD Winmax 2 makes more sense to me with the built in controls, but this one is much lighter. The trick with the Winmax 2 is some basic comfort grips that attach on either side of the device. Makes gaming on in for much more than 30 minutes at a time possible.
@@magfal I think there are many great possibilities like that. Imagine split screening, with your system on one side and the external system on the other. Maybe some have some shared storage as well.
@@ToxNano you would not be able to split screen if it's based on a mux chip and you would not get latency that's usable for more than managing a server when based on capture.
This is one of the best reviews of a GPD product I've ever seen, I've got a win max 4 and I love it but there are things you highlight in this video that I wish I'd known going into a GPD product
Reminds me of an old eeePC, or the entire netbook fad. Super cute, but when I tried typing on one, I wasn't just missing the keys I wanted... I kept missing the keyboard entirely. But this one goes even further, and rearranges keys to put one of dvorak's most-used letters next to the space bar. Er, the "pace bar". I'd be miing the "" key contantly and hitting "Enter" intead. uper frutrating to ue.
Thanks for a great review! I wonder why the unlock button and volume controls were not moved to the side of the laptop for the tablet mode like some laptop transformers.
Win Mini owner here, just ordered the Win Max 2 a bit ago. When i was first looking at all their products and deciding I was hoping they would come out with a pocket 4 because the pocket 3 specs were so behind compared to everything else. The pocket series seems so promising, glad they finally did. Its a shame the Pocket 4 seems amazing, yet that keyboard is the killer for me, when you can just get the Win Max 2, for 2" bigger I travel quite a lot for months on end, and i thought having the Win Mini would be the end all be all but i quickly found my self slowed down with the size and usability of the Win Mini's keyboard. I was always worried about travel size, but if you think about it you can bring an iPad anywhere, and the Win Max 2 is smaller (yet thicker) than an iPad air. so i think the better buy is Win Max 2 in terms of overall use, travelbility and comfort. The massive downfall of the Win Max 2 IMO is that refresh rate at 60hz, that seems like a silly compromise considering other devices have 120hz and how beefed out it is. Great video, im glad you mentioned the win max 2 in this video and compared the pros and cons. I hope you enjoy this laptop
What I cannot grep is that not one of the big SBC companies have released either an S922-XJ, S922-XK, S928-XJ, or S928-XJ, board. I just think that with the Dolby Vision licence attached to that ... they'd just mint it from folks wanting to DIY either their own media device or retro console.
For the love of God, and I say this in all appreciation of what russ does for the community: can one of the many manufacturers that he reviews make a smudge free special russ edition so he can reach his holy Grail? I think he deserves it at this point
All modern chargers are smart bro. Even smartphones that have 2 type c ports (like ROG 6), will only take power from 1 charger even if you connect both ports to the charger. Also like smartphones with wireless charging, even if you charge using a type-c port or wirelessly, the phone will only charge from one source. So a laptop like this is definitely smarter. But yeah, it could possibly explode if you use a fake charger or one that doesn't meet the specifications.
I'm not sure why having the option for the controls is a bad thing for the win max 2 though? You know you can still bring an extra controller for it right? lol why is it a negative point for it when it's an option?
@@hibookii Yes but it's a bigger device? Bigger screen? He can do exactly what he does with the pocket and use a controller it doesn't make much sense why having to use a controller is a positive only for the pocket when the win max 2 can do that too lol
Would love something like this if it was cheaper. I do almost all my work and gaming on a desk, so I have very little use for a full sized laptop. A form factor like this would be great for using in bed or in the rare occasions that I travel, but I don't do either enough to to spend $800+ to replace my old Thinkpad.
I wonder GPD's support for their products has gotten any better. I bought a GPD MicroPC a few years ago and they dropped any sort of updates for it pretty quickly.
in my opinion, the best compromise would be 11 or 8.8 inch tablet laptop you dont need the keyboard. on screen keyboard will work in a pinch you dont need the extra hinges, swivel, heft and weight bcs its just a screen and machine behind it keep the extra I/O though
Hey Russ just a question regarding all these various Chinese handhelds that you've owned during the years of testing, have you ever found your information being sold online or anything like that? If I didn't already have a win mini for my tiny computer needs, I would have bought this in a heartbeat.
Just *slightly* less pocketable, in exchange for a real keyboard, better trackpad, tablet mode, and all those cool interface options? I considered a Pocket 3 a while ago and gave it a pass because the processor seemed underpowered but this one is on par with or defeating most high-end full-size laptops...
Great detailed review as always. Been wondering what kind of game capture card are using to record the gameplay?
Congratulations on 600k Russ!
Even though it would probably add a ton of cost to the device, I'd love to see one of these with the old IBM-style switchblade keyboard.
I really hope the next Max is just this device with the gamepad
But will it play RuneScape?
How is the screen connected (electrically) to the main unit. Can't be a ribbon cable like most laptops because of the swivel. Always swiveling in the same direction would damage a cable. Does it only swivel 180 and then you have to go back the other way?
It stops at 180 degrees
imagine the jet-engine tier fans on that thing as soon as you open anything
Excellent review! I know you've discussed this in prior GPD videos, but what's your opinion on running Bazzite on this device? Would love to get your take! Thanks again 🙇♂
From what I've seen Bazzite should run well on the HX370, but I'm not sure if it would be a good match for using this laptop as an all-around mini solution, since Bazzite is so gaming-focused. I plan on using this for stuff like email and even though you could manage that via Bazzite, it probably wouldn't be as easy as just using Windows. Definitely something I am considering!
@@RetroGameCorps Amazing, thank you so much for the explanation!
Okay. This form factor with joysticks and rotating screen would be awesome (pen support would be great also to sign and note stuff). Hoping to see it for the next GPD Win.
nice! the netbook is back!
GPD Winmax 2 makes more sense to me with the built in controls, but this one is much lighter. The trick with the Winmax 2 is some basic comfort grips that attach on either side of the device. Makes gaming on in for much more than 30 minutes at a time possible.
KVM modules should be standard in laptops. Such a useful feature!
Would be even better if it was integrated with a mux chip instead of a capture chip since that would allow for zero lag.
Your 8bitdo controller is awesome I love these colors. Where did you get it ?
Nice to see what HX370 can do in emulation. Thank you
Another great video, Russ!
This reminds me of the Asus EeePC back in the day
God this thing is so cool. Love the form factor
An an aussie i laughed at "most flights are likely to be around 7hrs or shorter" 7hrs is a short international flight for us
Love the UH shirt 🤙🏻
This is one of the best reviews of a GPD product I've ever seen, I've got a win max 4 and I love it but there are things you highlight in this video that I wish I'd known going into a GPD product
New years resolution is not to snack. Dammit Russ!!!!
All that’s running through my head is this is the Kali laptop I’ve been waiting for
the way I recoiled when I clicked that IGG and saw the price, never mind....
Its a shame the Pocket 4 seems amazing, yet that keyboard is the killer for me, when you can just get the Win Max 2, for 2" bigger
I travel quite a lot for months on end, and i thought having the Win Mini would be the end all be all but i quickly found my self slowed down with the size and usability of the Win Mini's keyboard.
I would say that if they released this as a motherboard ... it could be amazing.
I've been looking for an affordable laptop that doesn't suck. I'll keep looking.
Gaming or general use?
For the love of God, and I say this in all appreciation of what russ does for the community: can one of the many manufacturers that he reviews make a smudge free special russ edition so he can reach his holy Grail? I think he deserves it at this point
What if you plug two chargers into it at the same time?
It explodes
I can only guess upcharge for the option.
Takes up space and according to him it's just bad controls anyway. Definitely subjective but hey it's a subjective review.
@@hibookii Yes but it's a bigger device? Bigger screen? He can do exactly what he does with the pocket and use a controller it doesn't make much sense why having to use a controller is a positive only for the pocket when the win max 2 can do that too lol
@@watchmejumpstart24 trackpad is in a terrible spot that could be improved on had it not been for the controls
@@Soulfin But the mouse controls using the gamepad are much better than trackpad?
I really like this , would be great for arcade games and old school rpg's
Would love something like this if it was cheaper. I do almost all my work and gaming on a desk, so I have very little use for a full sized laptop. A form factor like this would be great for using in bed or in the rare occasions that I travel, but I don't do either enough to to spend $800+ to replace my old Thinkpad.
I wonder GPD's support for their products has gotten any better. I bought a GPD MicroPC a few years ago and they dropped any sort of updates for it pretty quickly.
Hey RGC,
Can we expect a dedicated Apple/Mac Mini Emulation Tutorial and Setup video?
Regards,
ILB
So it's a "gaming" netbook?
I just bought an M1 Macbook and hope I can turn it into a portable gaming station as well, when I'm doing a month abroad
in my opinion, the best compromise would be 11 or 8.8 inch tablet laptop
you dont need the keyboard. on screen keyboard will work in a pinch
you dont need the extra hinges, swivel, heft and weight bcs its just a screen and machine behind it
keep the extra I/O though
Hey Russ just a question regarding all these various Chinese handhelds that you've owned during the years of testing, have you ever found your information being sold online or anything like that? Or have you ever checked to see whether or not there's anything going on inside of them that's reporting what you're doing on it to somewhere else
