  • Once you met her, Miss Jones was unforgettable. And so is the Rodgers and Hart song, here performed by Kenny Burrell, guitar; Reggie Johnson, string bass; Sherman Ferguson, drums; Jimmie Rowles, piano; Bucky Pizzarelli, guitar. Grande Parade du Jazz, Nice Jazz Festival, July 8, 1978. Presented by Michael Steinman for JAZZ LIVES (www.jazzlives.wordpress.com): source material thanks to Franz Hoffmann.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: one of the very best things about UA-cam is being able to see all of these wonderful tv performances by the legends of jazz themselves that would otherwise simply collect dust sitting on old tapes. Here they live on for everyone to experience.

Jimmie Rowles lived down the street from me through the 50s in Culver City, when I was 5 to about 13. He taught me Peter Peter, Pumpkin Eater on the black keys. When he played, I watched and laughed at the impossible miracles he could produce with those flying fingers on that garage upright

Bucky had it covered! He plays those single note chords staying out of the way harmonically and plays with such a fabulous swing feel.

The original video editing is awful, jumping around to non-soloists at random, but the performance is great! Glad this was posted for all to see. Kenny and Bucky are two of my favorites, and Jimmy is amazing (his commentary on Ken Burns Jazz is insightful, too).

Wow. Must have been hard for the guitarists to comp along with those crazy piano chords (at times). Thanks for the upload.

The terrain was very familiar to them, and they're wide-awake masters!

Love that disticntive sound of a 7 string chunking rhythm. Kenny ain't bad on that Super 400 either. ;)

    1978, in Nice, France...
I was in Paris in the middle of a stupid med school exam. Why wasn't I there, sitting in the front seat ??
BTW, Kenny plays on a S400 but which is the 7-strings model/brand Bucky's playing on ??

the grandeur of a pianist ....reveals itself...when not one guitarist but two of them are pestering you with their chord stuff during your solo, yikes, alas, one of them paid your gig ;-)

I've never seen Kenny baffled before, but comping behind a Bucky solo is tough work when he starts chording. Rest well Bucky, Gullivers in West Paterson NJ and Amos!

Jimmy and Kenny should have just laid out when Bucky played the chorded part of his solo. Someone soloing with chords doesn't need chordal accompaniment-- it just gets in the way...

I started going to Monday Guitar Nights in 1972. I was 18 and could drink AND watch jazz! What times, huh? And for great horn players, all you had to do was drive a mile up the road on McBride Ave to" 3 Sisters".
