thomas nikkola The ONLY other running movie that is OUTSTANDING is “RUNNING BRAVE”. Billy Mills is the man, and should be remembered as one of the GREATEST stories to ever grace the Olympics, Winter or Summer!!!
@raingutierrez3498 Yeah man!! The people who give this movie thumbs down must be from another country. Did you notice the sky is so blue with not a cloud in the sky. Very Cool Beans!!😊 I'm Rain Murphy Jr. Thank you Michael Mann and Peter Strauss for telling my dad's story and to Peter Strauss for portraiting my dad. I'm a runner just like my dad.⏱️🏃
Same here, this movie got me into Track & Field. I became a track star in high school sprints and relays and nothing more than a mile. I owe this movie a lot and the Stones too.
Even before I saw The Jericho Mile I was running all around the reservation that is where I lived until I was twelve years old then moved to NJ Then I would run all over our neighborhood. I am still a distance RUNNER. Thank you Michael Mann and Peter Strauss for portraiting my dad's story. My name is Rain Murphy Jr.
Saw this movie when I was a teenager, then heard the song on the radio on the way to a track meet. Had it going through my head the whole time. Blew away my personal best in the 400m by 4 seconds and cleaned the field. Wish I had a stopwatch to throw...Never ran that well again lol. Wish I'd tried to tap into that energy again. Great movie.
I also saw this movie on TV When I was a teenager. The whole movie blew me away. I was a miler just like Peter Strauss character. My real name is Luka RAIN Murphy Jr. Now I run 5K Races. My best time for running the mile was 4:03.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.
Remember watching this when it was broadcast on TV. Somehow has always stuck. Even then as a teenager, when Peter Strauss tells the board that he would do the same thing given the circumstances, it hit me that sometimes life is just plain nasty and there won't be an easy way about it. Give the writer's credit, it's not always going to be a happy ending.
@terrbaney9743 Never been truer words. My step father was beating my mom and raping my youngest step sister. I went to prison for beating my step father with a titanium baseball bat. I served 10 years of a life sentence in prison. I was an adult already. By the way...... I'm Rain Murphy Jr.!
Yes Life is really nasty. My step father was a real mean drunk and mean sober. A WANKER!! My older step sister was cool. But her younger sister was a Bitch.
A must see classic !!!! Most young generation now, wont get this movie ! persaverence, commitment, hard work, mental toughness, dedication, warrior drive, etc, etc, etc !!!
The Jericho Mile is the greatest running movie, Peter Strauss. Is fantastic as Murphy the Loner, Lifer, distance runner. This movie inspired me to become a distance runner too. I was in 9 the grade when I saw this movie . I ran all over my neighborhood . And in 1981 I had my Jericho Mile my time was 4:27:02 the walls came down for me!!⏱ "RAIN"🇨🇺
An absolute classic movie. Saw it when I was a kid and to this day(im 49) if someone asks me whats a good movie or my favorite film. Its the Jericho mile
Same here. I ran cross country and track in high school and college. People asked me about my favorite movie, running or otherwise, I always say “The Jericho Mile.”
Love this movie and unless you've been locked up you won't understand serving "LIFE in prison" and might miss the whole understanding of this movie. Very under rated movie. Now I never been to prison but I have friends go that made me stop writing them while end, to make their time easier.
I forgot to say I use to be a runner in my 20's & 30's.I'm older now but Peter Strauss gave me the inspiration to run again & maybe run a race I know it will not be easy because it has ben year's that I ran. I got the ok from my doctor. A very inspirational actor a & movie. please wish me LUCK.
I remember this from the ABC 4 pm movies that were on when I got home from grade school. I remember this song, Peter Strauss, Roger Mosley, Brian Dennehy and the stop watch. I wish they still made movies like this. It told a story without computer enhancements and super hero’s. Thank you for posting.
I was around 10 or so when this movie first came out. This movie will just overtake you with its emotional impact if you let it. Awesome stuff. Every bit as inspirational as Rocky.
Your absolutions right this is just one of Peter Strauss great movie's and to make It more fantastic he really trained for this movie and that IS ALL HIM RUNNIG. He won award for this movie and he DESERVED HE WAS GREAT.You can tell he really trained hard to make this movie.I wish he can see the comment's on his movie's how much the people like them old & new movie's.
I remember when i first saw this flick. 1994. Channel 13,no commercials,no cell-phones(For Most),just me by myself sitting there at full attention(Hypnotized to the little old tv) that was in the small tv-room. At that time,i myself was doing hours of bike-riding every-day trying to rehibilitate my surgically repaired right knee, and getting addicted to excessive cardio in the process. This was a unique stage/chapter of life for me and this movie really caught and captured my full attention during that time period. I was captivated and mesmerized by such a low-budget film, that was obviously a genius-like creation of the filmmakers. Sort of a Different variation of an inspirational type flick. Fiction Yes,but very possible to become someone's reality. Not something totally out of the question to really happen in Real-Life.
HI know this for a fact that after the movie The Jericho Mile was aired on TV march 18th 1979 some of the Inmate population made a bid to the Warden to keep the track on the prison yard for good. The Wardens allowed the track on the prison yard permanently. BTW My name is Rain Murphy Jr.
My favorite shot from the ending mile is 7:33-7:38 where the people cheering him on are a blur. It’s a strictly visual way of telling the audience Murphy is Flying. Lickety-Split.
@Rain Gutierrez That is a great observation, in several ways. Not only are you spot on with the symbolism, Michael Mann said he loves camera shots which he called “claustrophobic.” He gave examples of streetlights reflecting off of Frank’s car in “Thief” and a near identical shot in the pilot episode of “Miami Vice.” The five second bit here qualifies as well.
Funny story... Patrick, one of my best friends, his father (Pat Sr.) is the man who wrote this film. We used to have Keg Parties at his Dads house and Drunk Pat would pass his Dads Academy Award around, as if it were some kind of worthless High School Trophy. It was only after we got out of HS that I fully understood what that Award was and how he earned it. Crazy man, Pat and I are still friends to this day... I always got along with his father also.
This movie is about a very messed up situation, but it is one of my all time favorite movies. Also, near the end of this film, a great version of a "Stones" song is played.
Wow 1979 ,i was 31,saw it on abc,i got it,but even better now ,the stop watch being thrown over the wall age does bring a tad of wisdom, just a tad mind you.
3:50.6 WOW, that's one fast mile. I use to run the mile. Fastest time for me. A tad over 6 minutes. Do you guys realize what it takes to run mile under 4 minutes , how fast each lap has to be, I mean there's no coasting, it' full speed all the way. BOY! 0% body fat anyone notice!
