Scott I am a 57 year old female who only discovered disc golf 2 years ago. Heck it has given me and my husband a new lease of life. It cannot be underestimated what this sport can do for well being in so many ways. I admire what you are doing, and you are the inspiration to me that my age is absolutely irrelevant :) Our course is full of the a) 15 - 20 year old newbie crushers b) 20 - 30 year old regular crushers so we are kinda in the very small category of older folks but we love it. All the best for 2022. We will be enjoying your journey from here in NZ. Here is hoping you are named rookie of the year to cause head scratching for the 2nd year running :D
Me too, I'm 63. My brother and I are usually the two oldest players on the park course that we play. Most are 15 to 30. So I'm thrilled to see Scott attempt to do this. Hopefully he can get through the season without an injury.
So glad you and your husband are playing! I’ve been doing this since 1975. I still have a couple of discs that are sometimes 2 times older than my card mates LOL!
Yeah, maybe day 1 feature card, but then he'd never be on coverage again. He needs to work his way up. I bet he'll be competing hard with brodie smith this year.. but doubt he will give any top pros trouble
I love your honesty and mentality with this, it is much like golf clubs...not every manufacturer may produce the best driver, irons, wedges and putter to suit your game so carry a mixed bag. Keep promoting the sport and helping all of us get better, Scott we appreciate what you do!
Love listening to you break down aspects of the sport. It was really cool seeing you in Winona, MN, spending time giving advice to an AM player, minutes removed from competition.
So right on. That's one of the great things about sport - optimizing the individuality of players with their equipment and strategies to achieve sports objectives. Your story is exciting and I'm enjoying watching it unfold. Can't wait to watch you on the tour...I hope you scarily surprise a lot of people.
One "pro" of throwing one brand for a newer or intermediate player: Less choice is good sometimes. Having the choice between a Kastaplast K2 Kaxe Z, Dynamic Discs Fuzion X Emac Truth, or Prodigy 300s M4 was making my head spin, so I just decided to limit myself to Trilogy plastic and it really helped me not get overwhelmed with choices, and it allowed me to focus more on getting better with what I have vs considering thousands of molds.
This is truth! I've been doing this for 6 years now. It is funny because there are discs i bag that i haven't thrown in months just because i haven't been put in that specific scenario. Good advice as always!
Oh my gosh what perfect timing I literally just like a half hour ago finished cutting my bag down to a mix between trilogy and Discraft with like 3 other discs that I can’t find in those 2 companies (including the berg, that disc is incredible) because I usually only throw those 2 anyways! This is awesome, made me feel better about keeping those 3 extra discs 😂
I cannot wait to see how you do on the tour this year. You’ve played an important part in the past and present of disc golf-now you have a shot at impacting the future as well.
Good takes. I got into disc golf about 2 years ago. First I collected discs from 1 manufacturer to try them. I really like their molds and plastic. I built a 1 brand bag. After getting a bit better I started to learn which discs fit my shots and which don't. For certain shots I started to search for other options. Now my bag has 2 discs from other brands and I think it works for me.
scott love your videos, thank you for showing us some good bag advice and for the different perspectives of the same situation you give absolutely awesome good luck on tour this year!!
Received my Stokely Bergs! Love the feel of the shape of the disc in my hand and the grippy k3 polymer. Thanks for helping me take my game to the next level with all of your helpful insights.
I am happy for you😀 I respect that approach!! It has been interesting that people have proven that they can throw a full line up from different manufacturers and still win tournaments! I think we’re seeing how similar discs are. I also think that the top-tier players can get discs made to a specification that works for them. So for instance if you’re with Innova and then you go over to kastaplast and you say hey my favorite putter is a bullfrog and Kastaplast doesn’t have a putter that’s working good enough for you all a sudden they come out with a putter with your name on it thats probably going to be similar to a bullfrog and it has your name on it to boot!
I am super excited for you this season!! Having an older player really get out there and compete is exciting!! Also excited about you and Eric throwing a mixed bag this season. I think it really highlights the fact that so many manufacturers make so many good discs these days and its fun to see the different selections you all have decided that fits you best
Some very well articulated points and great content. Everyone is different and therefore one person's way may not be your way, and neither is wrong. Our bags are as unique to us as fingerprints in most cases. As a mold minimalist myself, I choose to stay "brand loyal" simply because of consistent plastic and feel, repetition, and being able to take the same mold and beat them in over time and cycle them into the shot shapes required. That takes a lot of time and routine fieldwork to learn your discs and how they change over time. Whereas your approach allows you to grab a disc off the shelf and it match your shot shape needs but requires more molds. Both have some major pros and very minimal cons. You do you Scott, best of luck on tour! PS My only non brand loyal disc is the K3 Berg, and I have you to thank for that!
It’s getting exciting now! Ya know I’m watching every round you are featured on😆 I love how you explained discs for shot execution because that is exactly how I choose my bag. Of course, I never could’ve articulated it as well, lol! Having won or placed in a bunch of amateur tournaments (when I started competing) gave me a ton of new plastic to feel out which was super valuable when I was building confidence in my game. Trying out discs without having spent a ton of money helped me keep competing too especially as an unsponsored stay at home mom of two boys. Gave my kids a chance to try out & bag discs too💙
As an amateur disc golfer, to me it comes down to replacing discs that fly the (close to the same as the disc I lost) same. Some companies have models that vary greatly between runs. Other companies have more consistent discs from each production run.
My bag is mixed Innova , mint with some black zombie putters . Being from Austin I try to keep my purchases local . The only Innova I bag is a wraith , roadrunner and a mamba . I’ve been bagging those since I started playing . Every now and then I try out different things but always tend to just go with what I know . I don’t think I would ever throw just one brand unless I were paid to .
Hey there I've been a fan since 1994, I watched you throw a shot that you called the stogle craziest thing I had ever seen and I was hooked instantly, but anyway there is infinite disc that let you throw any manufacturers disc, just throwing that out there your awesome love the content!!
I love mixed bag because I get to try out all different types of plastics and feel while on the course. It’s fun! I also will sometimes make secondary “brand loyal” bags just for fun with about 6 discs just for the sake of pretending I’m a sponsored athlete with my friends 😂. I’m a rec player so I’m not all worried about udisc and the best score and whatnot. I just want my fresh air, my exercise and throw some plastic!
I currently only throw MVP discs, its not because im trying to be cool or be sponsored but i just LOVE the plastics. They are incredibly durable, feel sick in the hand and the community around the discs is really cool and chill. I do sometimes think about bagging a berg though 😅 so we will see if i mix that in there some day!
You talking about liking a brand helped to bring up the question of whether most people are brand supporting based on the brand or the player playing for them? I try and buy discs that players I like will benefit from but when it comes down to my playing bag I will go outside those disks if they do not fit me. I bought your signature Marvel because I wanted to support you more than thinking that was the best putter for me. Your hands are larger than mine and you park I’ve kids put more speed on the disc than I do so I figure we will be throwing discs that are different for asimuliar shot
I think those sponsors were wise to do that. Previously, it always seemed like a player was either sponsored or he wasn't. But what if a player missed having a certain disc he needed ? Scott has solved the problem with multiple sponsorship for a mixed bag. I think it's a great idea. But I think it shows the respect they have for Scott. Could that be a future trend in Disc Golf ? Maybe not for the very top players that might have a million dollar contract put in front of them, but certainly for other pro's that prefer a mixed bag ??
I throw a mega mixed bag. I tried being trilogy loyal when I started, but then Discraft started seeping in, then Innova got some spots, and Discmania got some room, and I just throw was I like. Say one tournament I was in going West and East we had a south to north wind, so depending which way the hole went had me pick between Stalker from Discraft or Teebird from Innova. And both worked spendid. Plus gotta enjoy the freedom of throwing mixed.
Me too. Out of curiosity. How many different molds do you bag? My tournament bag has discs from 6-7 manufacturers. Destroyer is the only disc on regular bag that is also used by most top pros in that manufacturers. For 20 years I have thrown discs that fits my hand and my game. I have never bagged a disc because certain pro or any pro throws. I have bought discs based what I hear or see or recommend, but most of them don't make a regular bag. I have about 10 different molds in regular bag. I have never been bag as few molds as possible. I have thrown most of the molds I bag for about 10 years so I know how they fly. Half of my bag is over 3 years old and some have been in the bag for over 5 years. They don't fly much like they did in the past :) I am slowly changing into newer discs so that if I lose one, I can go to a shop and buy a new one. I love seasoned discs and especially seasoned overstable discs, but hate to lose those and not having a back-up. In order to buy a bag that covers all throws and shapes mega mixed bag is mandatory. Aging causes change of bag as well. Needing less stable discs nowadays than back in the day. I have never been brand loyal and never had an idol in disc golf so I have never bagged any discs because of a pro player. Destroyer is the only disc that is in any manufacturers top 3 seller. Oh, not sure if Kaxe Z is Kastaplast's top selling discs.
Good luck Scott..Already bought some of your Bergs even though I probably don't need anymore lol..I never tried the Stall yet, but open to trying something the can give my FX-2 a run for its money
I only throw one manufacture because I don't have the skill and time to determine the best possible disc for every shot. Each of the leading manufactures has a disc for every shot, so I've just picked one and become familiar with their whole family of discs. If I was as knowledgeable as you, I'm sure that I would go shot by shot, building my perfect bag. Still, I know that there is no way I could tell the difference if from a stack of Destroyer of Buzzz clones from every different manufacture there is no way I could tell them apart, but I opened myself up to a mixed bag my OCD would force me to try.
I am Mixed bag with a mold that is no longer made entirely as the #2 Upshot from Lightning discs in the Prostyle plastic that I can substitute some Star Shark for in some more open shots but not for others. The majority is however an Innova or Discraft/single DGA if the Titanic in Proline (2 good backups) is considered more a Discraft mold only minorly modified for DGA needs. This was due to how in 2000's there was mainly Innova brands and Discraft brands for discs at the time. Now if starting new (in South Dakota) I would think about what I want probably going closest brands to me either Discraft/DGA, Dynamic Discs or even more recently Discmania, thinking possibly discs from all three brands right now that fit my game but lost to who could make a Valkyrie/Dragon like disc, probably using the Mantis in this case for that old style S shot and getting both a heavier 170--172 gram and a lightweight lowest weight they currently make Pro D long bomber tailwind disc to be like the Dragon. Then Later looking for a Distance Mantis from the three closest companies to me.
Scott, this a great video. Could you please share with us the different shot shapes you think we should have in our game and then list disc ideas from different manufacturers that fit each of the shots you believe a player needs? Trying to figure this out on my own seems overwhelming. Thanks man!
Pros of throwing a mixed bag; you can bag a berg and a piwakawaka. My mid/approach game couldn't do without that combo and I was introduced to both by your videos. Look forward to seeing what else you are bagging and hope to see you at WACO.
Wait! You're saying I need more than one RPM Ruru to play disc golf? ;) Man, I am absolutely DYING to get my hands on a Gold Line Sinus. I would crawl over broken glass for a kilometre just to buy a ticket to win one in a lottery! It must be nice to have manufacturers chase you.
Honestly, I rock a mixed bag because there are certain discs I consider absolutely necessary in the wind, like the Harp, Deflector, and Stiletto (I'd love to try a nuke OS, but they're unobtanium). There's no way to get the ultimate wind-fighting discs without a mixed bag.
Took me over a year to rebuild my bag after playing with same discs for 15-20 years and lots of discs that didn’t make it … and then I hurt my elbow and I’m most likely going to have to slow the entire bag down 🙄 … I have a good idea what I will need to do with discs but it’s frustrating to go through the entire process again… luckily I can throw in my yard I have a clear 400’ area I can do field work 😊
The getaway would have been fine for ya, you didn’t need the stahl. You needed a tour series disc.😂 I’m not brand partial at all. Haha good luck this season Scott looking forward to seeing you get it done this year.
So I still go back every few months and watch your sidearm videos, and I was crushed when I saw your one Michigan seminar session in 2022 is already booked full. Apropos to this video, though, I think the bigger pieces of this debate, aside from sponsorship questions, involve how much sticking with one brand becomes a "go with what you know" proposition versus precluding strong choices because they're from the "wrong" company. Throw a few other availability and "warm and fuzzy" sorts of ideas into the mix for flavor, and I think the sponsorship question for us mortals becomes less interesting. I call my bag a hybrid of the two ideas: It's a mix of MVP's brands and Westside. Obviously I'm not specifically loyal to one or the other, but I like having the familiarity with their molds, plastics and resultant characteristics, and both companies seem to have strong communities around them. I like that MVP's based near where I grew up, as well-one of those "warm and fuzzy" factors. But who knows? My game's a perpetual work in progress (as I believe it should be), and my bag, thus, is as well.
I just started disc golf and I'm wearing out the heel of my socks! I've gone through 3 pairs just learning...Will this get better? Or do pro's also wear the heel of their socks? Keep up the great work!
Wait, what...?! Thought the Berg was your putter this year? Now it's the Marvel? I've been using the Berg for 6-7 months now and really like it, but recently took it out in favor of the Xero. Anxious to see what this Marvel is about from Birdie. I'm sure I'll test it. I'm always testing new putters, but I very rarely change what is in my bag.
Great video. I have always wondered if the sponsored players were missing out on shots because their brand didn't have a disc that matched a shot they wanted?
Answer is yes. Pros who change manufacturers do miss discs from the previous manufacturer. Of course they can't say that in public, but I have talked with quite many pros off the record. I never talked about their honest opinion in public either so their "secret" is safe with me. They get new gems they haven't had before and they lose some. I know "lower level" pros who rejects all deals from manufacturers. Deal might be 100 discs per year and no money. Is it worth to make compromises and lose e.g. your favourite driver. Probably not. Some just over 1000 rated pros who don't get good deals have not continued contract, because they have wanted to go back to their favorite discs and mixed bag. Then there is e.g. McBeth who can tell Discraft to make a new mold if he is missing something. Who knows, maybe he still misses something from Innova. Nowadays selection is so good that bigger manufacturers have pretty much everything, but Force/Zeus/D1 etc. are not Destroyers e.g. Flight might be close, but might feel different. Mixed bag = if flight is good, but doesn't feel good --> throw something with similar flight that feels good. Sorry about such a long comment. I am not a pro, but I know many and been around for 20 years. Scott know even more and maybe he will comment differently. So basically pros are not necessarily missing the shots with branded bag, but they might lack the result they want. Just don't feel comfortable with something they are throwing. If you don't feel comfortable, it is difficult to be confident. On top it's also about small details. If all the pros in the world could choose any disc from any manufacturer, I think none of them would have 100% branded bag.
@@kimmomatikainen1843 don't apologize for the long reply. I enjoyed reading it. I think the end summary was especially poignant, If all the pros in the world could choose any disc from any manufacturer, I think none of them would have 100% branded bag.
I am guilty of buying one disc for a specific hole at a local course. I throw lat 64 made discs except the Envy and Paradox. MVP mids and putters are outrageous. I feel like for my skill level my bag has all the shots.
I don't understand why you couldn't just get sponsored by infinite discs? They carry everything you throw all due respect, just confused is all. Love the content man ✌
Trying to learn the ins and outs of 5+ companies plus their molds and plastics because there might be a disc out there that is marginally better sounds like a nightmare to me.
what do you think of the durability of the trilogy plastics, my felon has gone from very overstable to kinda straight in 3 months, is that how its supposed to be? my 2 year old firebird is still os as s***.
OCD, did the front door close? With it being so cold out, that's just throwing money away. Come on Scott! I gotta know if that door was latched properly.
One of the things I think is beautiful about how the professional evolution regarding companies and disc golf as a sport with sponsors is how our community has the capability to break the old mould and make a myriad of universal moulds to work together and survive. I've an eclectic collection of moulds and have experienced an eclectic amount of discs. I hold a similar viewpoint about shots, especially as an ambidextrous player.

I am slowly changing into newer discs so that if I lose one, I can go to a shop and buy a new one.
Groundbreaking, good luck and we'll be following and buying your signature discs.
Scott, this a great video. Could you please share with us the different shot shapes you think we should have in our game and then list disc ideas from different manufacturers that fit each of the shots you believe a player needs? Trying to figure this out on my own seems overwhelming. Thanks man!
My in the bag series will basically be this!
Non beaded Wizard is the Warlock....almost had it ;)
Good luck on tour
Love ya Scott and what you are doing!
Pros of throwing a mixed bag; you can bag a berg and a piwakawaka.
My mid/approach game couldn't do without that combo and I was introduced to both by your videos. Look forward to seeing what else you are bagging and hope to see you at WACO.
Just wanted to say this was a great video👍
Wait! You're saying I need more than one RPM Ruru to play disc golf? ;)
Man, I am absolutely DYING to get my hands on a Gold Line Sinus. I would crawl over broken glass for a kilometre just to buy a ticket to win one in a lottery!
It must be nice to have manufacturers chase you.
Hope you kill it out there this year Scott! Would be cool to see you at Idaho State Championship again.
That is one awesome chair/cart!
Aye Scott out here killing it!
Thanks for all you do for the DG community! Such an amazing teacher! Would you tell me where you got that cart from? Is it custom? Thanks Scott!
I’ll be selling them actually. Announcement coming. Scottstokely.net to get on the mailing list
@@ScottStokelyDG no way! Thanks for the quick reply! I have been searching online and came to a dead end! Will look out for the announcement! So cool
Loving the content.
Took me over a year to rebuild my bag after playing with same discs for 15-20 years and lots of discs that didn’t make it … and then I hurt my elbow and I’m most likely going to have to slow the entire bag down 🙄 … I have a good idea what I will need to do with discs but it’s frustrating to go through the entire process again… luckily I can throw in my yard I have a clear 400’ area I can do field work 😊
Definitely interested in the cart 👍🏼
Loved this one ☝🏽 thanks 😊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥇🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The getaway would have been fine for ya, you didn’t need the stahl. You needed a tour series disc.😂 I’m not brand partial at all. Haha good luck this season Scott looking forward to seeing you get it done this year.
Can't wait to see what other companies sponsored you this year!
Hey Scott, When do you think we’ll see a 2022 In the Bag? Really inspiring talk here. Kinda taking Mixed Bag to the next level.
The first 2 installments of my In The Bag are up. I'll be dedicating a video to each disc selected for my bag.
I just started disc golf and I'm wearing out the heel of my socks! I've gone through 3 pairs just learning...Will this get better? Or do pro's also wear the heel of their socks? Keep up the great work!
As your form gets better, your socks should start lasting LOL
Wait, what...?! Thought the Berg was your putter this year? Now it's the Marvel? I've been using the Berg for 6-7 months now and really like it, but recently took it out in favor of the Xero. Anxious to see what this Marvel is about from Birdie. I'm sure I'll test it. I'm always testing new putters, but I very rarely change what is in my bag.
Berg is my go to putter. Marvel is my beadless throwing putter :-)
Curious to see if Innova discs will make the bag ... (Hope so ;p)
I am guilty of buying one disc for a specific hole at a local course. I throw lat 64 made discs except the Envy and Paradox. MVP mids and putters are outrageous. I feel like for my skill level my bag has all the shots.
Marvel = Warden would that be the fairest comparison based on dimensions?
Marvel seems a little shallower on the configuration
You gotta try the A series from prodigy
Stokers for president 2024
I don't understand why you couldn't just get sponsored by infinite discs? They carry everything you throw all due respect, just confused is all. Love the content man ✌
Trying to learn the ins and outs of 5+ companies plus their molds and plastics because there might be a disc out there that is marginally better sounds like a nightmare to me.
Best golfer in the world
Where do I get his roller bag?
When is the LVC?
2/24/22 is the first day of scored rounds
what do you think of the durability of the trilogy plastics, my felon has gone from very overstable to kinda straight in 3 months, is that how its supposed to be? my 2 year old firebird is still os as s***.
I love trilogy plastic. Every disc and every blend can be a little different.
OCD, did the front door close? With it being so cold out, that's just throwing money away. Come on Scott! I gotta know if that door was latched properly.
Locked up tight... As far as you know.
Kastaplast babyy
Stälkley in 2022?
One of the things I think is beautiful about how the professional evolution regarding companies and disc golf as a sport with sponsors is how our community has the capability to break the old mould and make a myriad of universal moulds to work together and survive. I've an eclectic collection of moulds and have experienced an eclectic amount of discs. I hold a similar viewpoint about shots, especially as an ambidextrous player.
Brand loyalty helps with not buying 10 discs for every slot
You’ll throw better throwing what’s most comfortable for you.
👍🏾
#teamstokely
Soon you will be sponsored by infinite they need you and you can still throw a mixed bag
